Overview
EN 2591-325:2002 - "Aerospace series - Elements of electrical and optical connection - Test methods - Part 325: Ice resistance" is a CEN/AECMA European standard that defines test methods to measure a connector’s ability to resist ice. It is intended for electrical and optical connectors used in aerospace equipment and is to be used together with EN 2591-100 (general test method requirements). Keywords: EN 2591-325:2002, ice resistance, aerospace connectors, connector test methods.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Specifies two distinct ice-resistance test methods for connectors; applies to elements of electrical and optical connection in aerospace systems.
- Reference: Must be used in conjunction with EN 2591-100 for general test preparation and procedures.
- Specimen preparation: Connectors are fitted with normal accessories and wired per the technical specification. Coupling and uncoupling torque limits must be defined in the technical specification.
- Method A - Water immersion test:
- Specimens fully immersed in water for 1 minute, then shaken to remove excess water.
- Placed in a low-temperature chamber at the temperature printed in the standard (shown in the document extract as "( - 6505-) °C") for 1 hour.
- Procedure repeated three times.
- After the third immersion specimens are unmated and mated twice; coupling/uncoupling torque measured during the second operation.
- Method B - Water spraying test:
- Specimens placed in a low-temperature chamber at the temperature printed in the standard (shown as "( - 1805-) °C") for 1 hour.
- Immediately sprayed with water at the temperature printed in the standard ("(250+) °C") over their entire surface for 5 minutes; spray nozzle placed at a maximum distance of 305 mm.
- Specimens returned to the chamber at "( - 1805-) °C" for 30 minutes.
- Coupling and uncoupling torque measurements performed immediately after removal.
- Acceptance: Torque measurements after tests must be within limits specified in the applicable technical specification.
Practical applications
- Ensures ice resistance of aerospace electrical and optical connectors used on airframes, nacelles, sensors and external avionics.
- Used by:
- Connector and cable harness manufacturers for product qualification.
- Test laboratories performing environmental certification.
- Design and reliability engineers assessing connector robustness in cold/icing environments.
- Procurement and quality teams requiring conformity with aerospace connector test methods.
- Helps reduce in-service failures caused by icing, ensuring reliable mating/unmating and electrical/optical continuity after exposure.
Related standards
- EN 2591-100 - General test methods for aerospace electrical and optical connection elements (mandatory companion standard).
- Other EN 2591 parts cover additional environmental and mechanical test methods for connectors.
This standard is essential for aerospace professionals who specify, design, test or approve connectors where ice formation and cold exposure are operational concerns.
