SIST EN 62216:2011
(Main)Digital terrestrial television receivers for the DVB-T system (IEC 62216:2009)
Digital terrestrial television receivers for the DVB-T system (IEC 62216:2009)
IEC 62216:2009(E) specifies both Standard Definition and High Definition receivers for the DVB-T system. Subtitling and teletext are considered to be components of TV services. It addresses terrestrial delivery of digital transmissions and deployment in countries that use European Latin script based languages. Two types of systems are considered: - standard systems where services are all SD and - use well-established codecs. Standard receivers which can decode standard services are suitable for these systems; advanced systems where some services may use advanced codecs, for example to provide HD video. Advanced receivers which can decode advanced services are suitable for these systems.
• comment diffuser des émissions recevables par l’ensemble des récepteurs et permettre à ces derniers d’offrir aux téléspectateurs de bonnes fonctionnalités;
• les systèmes normalisés dont les services sont tous SD et utilisent des codecs bien connus. Les récepteurs standard qui peuvent décoder des services standard conviennent pour ces systèmes;
Sprejemniki digitalne prizemne televizije sistema DVB-T (IEC 62216:2009)
Ta mednarodni standard določa sprejemnike s standardno in visoko ločljivostjo sistema DVB-T. Samostojne storitve teletekst (brez povezane videovsebine) niso del tega standarda. Ta standard predvsem obravnava prizemni prenos digitalnega oddajanja. Obravnavana sta dva tipa sistemov: - standardni sistemi, kjer so vse storitve načrtovane in uporabljajo uveljavljene kodekse.

Overview
SIST EN 62216:2011 (identical to IEC 62216:2009 / EN 62216:2011) defines requirements for digital terrestrial television receivers for the DVB‑T system. It covers both Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) receiver functionality, treats subtitling and teletext as integral TV service components, and is targeted to terrestrial deployments in countries using European Latin‑script languages. The standard distinguishes two deployment scenarios: standard systems (all SD, well‑established codecs) and advanced systems (some services use advanced codecs, e.g., for HD), and specifies receiver capabilities accordingly.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard addresses receiver design, service handling and interoperability. Major technical topics include:
- Receiver capabilities: frequency support, conditional access, return path, EPG/Service Information (SI), auto‑installation, content protection and copy management.
- Video system characteristics: SD and HD video support, codec handling, picture types, video alignment and chroma sampling considerations.
- Video display formatting: signalling requirements, format switching, active format description and recommendations for stream metadata.
- Audio system characteristics: multichannel audio, synchronization, audio metadata, decoding requirements (including AC‑3/E‑AC‑3 and ISO/IEC codecs), downmixing and audio description support.
- Multiplex and transport stream characteristics: multiplexing/demultiplexing behaviour and multicomponent program handling.
- Service and program specific information (SI/PSI): EPG, language codes, SI signalling guidelines and broadcaster/receiver responsibilities.
- Accessibility and text services: integrated subtitling, teletext carriage in DVB streams and audio description support.
- Operational features: over‑air software update, API considerations and receiver testing constraints.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
SIST EN 62216 is essential for:
- Receiver manufacturers and hardware designers ensuring DVB‑T compatibility and interoperability.
- Firmware and middleware developers implementing codecs, SI handling, subtitle/teletext rendering and software update mechanisms.
- Broadcasters and network operators designing service streams, SI/PSI and accessibility services for DVB‑T.
- Test labs and certification bodies for compliance testing and market conformity (CENELEC adoption).
- System integrators and regulatory authorities specifying receiver requirements for national terrestrial deployments.

INTRODUCTION
Television has evolved over the last half century from an up-market entertainment medium to
becoming the major information tool around the world. Television is available to virtually all
people around the globe, be it individually or in a community setting.
The advent of the “personal computer”, enabling global reach and instant interaction has
escalated the demand for more and more information and the ability to respond to it instantly.
It is thus that the broadcasters and content providers set out to seek new means of delivering
higher levels of content, be it in volume or quality using existing or new transport mechanisms
available.
Digitalisation, taken from the world of information technology was the obvious choice. It
further brought the added benefits of efficient use of spectrum and energy. Terrestrial
television has to migrate from analogue to digital in order to survive in the new information
society.
Governments are keen to switch off the inefficient analogue broadcasts for a number of
obvious reasons, but only will be able to do so when consumers are confident that the new
proposition is attractive and affordable.
Due to the multitude of communities, sometimes single operators, often on a co

SIST EN 62216:2011 is a standard published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST). Its full title is "Digital terrestrial television receivers for the DVB-T system (IEC 62216:2009)". This standard covers: IEC 62216:2009(E) specifies both Standard Definition and High Definition receivers for the DVB-T system.
