Overview

SIST EN 15471:2017 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a high-temperature gravimetric method for determining dissolved residues in liquefied petroleum gases (LPG). This method is designed to measure the amount of dissolved residual matter remaining after evaporation of LPG samples at 105 °C using jet evaporation equipment conforming to EN ISO 6246. The standard provides a reliable and precise approach to quantifying residues in LPG, essential for quality control and compliance within the petroleum and gaseous fuels industry.

The measurement range covers dissolved residues from 20 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg, with the flexibility to analyze higher concentrations by adjusting sample size. SIST EN 15471:2017 supersedes the 2007 version, incorporating technical updates and clarifications to enhance testing accuracy and operational safety.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Specifies the gravimetric method utilizing jet evaporation for evaporating LPG samples and quantifying dissolved residues.
  • Sampling: Based on EN ISO 4257, LPG sampling ensures representative and contamination-free test materials.
  • Apparatus: Includes specialized stainless steel sample cylinders, in-line filters, cooling baths with solid carbon dioxide, and precision balances, compliant with EN ISO 6246.
  • Procedure:
    • Sampling and purging to ensure clean LPG sample collection.
    • Evaporation of LPG sample at controlled temperature (105 °C).
    • Jet evaporation to dry the residue using filtered air flow.
    • Weighing the oily residue with an analytical balance to the nearest 0.1 mg.
  • Precision: Documented repeatability and reproducibility data determined through interlaboratory testing. Repeatability (r) and reproducibility (R) values vary depending on residue concentration, with statistical models provided for quality assurance.
  • Safety: Highlights the need for proper safety protocols due to hazardous materials and equipment involved, emphasizing user responsibility to ensure safe application and compliance with regulations.
  • Complementary Methods: Notes EN 15470 as an alternative standard using gas chromatography for determining dissolved residues.

Applications

SIST EN 15471:2017 is particularly valuable for:

  • Quality control laboratories testing LPG to verify conformity with product specifications.
  • Fuel suppliers and distributors monitoring the purity and stability of LPG batches.
  • Manufacturers of LPG appliances and equipment ensuring fuel quality to prevent operational issues caused by residue deposits.
  • Regulatory authorities and inspection bodies assessing LPG for safety and environmental standards compliance.
  • Research and development focusing on refining LPG processing and improving fuel formulations.

By applying this standardized gravimetric test method, stakeholders can quantitatively assess dissolved residues, contributing to safer handling, improved combustion performance, and extended equipment lifespan.

Related Standards

  • EN ISO 6246: Petroleum products – Jet evaporation method for gum content, referenced for apparatus requirements.
  • EN ISO 4257: Sampling of liquefied petroleum gases, foundational for LPG sample collection under this method.
  • EN 15470: An alternative European Standard specifying a gas chromatography method for dissolved residue determination in LPG.
  • EN ISO 4259: Petroleum products – Precision data determination and application, used to evaluate method precision.
  • National and international regulations governing the handling and testing of LPG and related hazardous materials.

Summary

The SIST EN 15471:2017 standard offers a robust, precise, and widely accepted method for determining dissolved residual matter in LPG using a high-temperature gravimetric technique. It supports quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and safety management in LPG production, supply, and usage. Laboratories and industry professionals benefit from its clear procedural instructions, defined apparatus specifications, and detailed precision data, enabling accurate measurement of impurities that impact LPG performance and safety.
