Safety nets - Part 1: Safety requirements, test methods

This European Standard is applicable to safety nets and their accessories for use in construction, scaffolding, falsework and assembly work and specifies safety requirements and test methods. This product standard does is not applicable to the installation of safety nets. For a European Standard covering the installation of safety nets see prEN 1263-2:1995.

Diese Europäische Norm gilt für Schutznetze und Schutznetzzubehör, die bei Bau- und Montagearbeiten Verwendung zum Schutz gegen Absturz bzw. tieferen Absturz finden und ist auf die Verhaltenseigenschaften von Polypropen- und Polyamidfasern aufgebaut. Materialien, die in Netzen verwendet werden, sollten keine signifikante Verminderung der mechanischen Eigenschaften zwischen - 10 °C und + 40 °C aufweisen. Sie legt sicherheits-technische Anforderungen und Prüfverfahren fest. Diese Norm gilt nicht für die Errichtung von Schutznetzen. Für die Errichtung von Schutznetzen siehe EN 1263-2.

Filets de sécurité - Partie 1 : Exigences de sécurité, méthodes d'essai

La présente Norme européenne s'applique aux filets de sécurité et a leurs accessoires utilisés dans les travaux de construction et d'assemblage pour protéger contre des chutes de hauteurs conséquentes. Elle spécifie les exigences de sécurité et les méthodes d'essai et est fondée sur les caractéristiques de performance des fibres de polypropene et de polyamide. Il convient que les matériaux utilisés pour la fabrication des filets ne présentent pas de réduction significative de leurs caractéristiques mécaniques dans une plage de températures comprises entre - 10 °C et + 40 °C.
Cette norme ne couvre pas la pose des filets de sécurité. Pour une Norme européenne couvrant la pose des filets de sécurité, se reporter a l'EN 1263-2.

EN 1263-1:2002 (E)5IntroductionSafety nets for use in construction and other assembly work, e.g. as devices to catch falling persons during theconstruction of halls and bridges, in open line construction as side protection, as anti-fall devices or devices tocatch falling persons on working scaffolds, as side protection for safety scaffolds at roofs and in tunnelling can bechosen as a technically suitable and economic solution to catch persons falling from a height. They serve to protectfrom deeper falls even when large areas in plan occur.In contrast to being secured by a lanyard and harness the mobility of persons working above the area protected bysafety nets is not impaired during all work activity. Moreover, the use of safety nets has the advantage to catchpersons falling from a height more softly than lanyards caused by large plastic deformations of the net.Attention should be paid to the fact that the ageing sensitivity of safety nets due to exposure to UV requires thatthey are exposed to open air condition a limited time only and then be withdrawn from service. For the evaluation ofthe ageing behaviour tests have been carried out over a period between 6 months and 24 months which apply tothe most commonly used materials polyamide and polypropylene. The specifications of the limit values of breakingenergy are based on these tests and on drop tests with articulated dummies and test spheres. After having beensubjected to respective loading by persons falling from height the safety nets should be replaced, if appropriate.1 ScopeThis European Standard applies to safety nets and their accessories for use in construction and assembly work toprotect from deeper fall. EN 1263-1:2002 (E)136 Requirements6.1 Construction6.1.1 Mesh ropeThe mesh rope construction shall have a minimum of three independent threads and shall be constructed in such away that it cannot unravel. Mesh rope shall be tested in accordance to 7.3NOTE 1This means that any damaged or cut threads do not run outside the extent of the mesh in which the damage issustained, see 7.3.NOTE 2Knotted net construction is unlikely to exhibit this condition.6.1.2 NetNets shall be made with a square (Q) or diamond (D) mesh, see Figure 6 a) and 6 b). EN 1263-1:2002 (E)146.1.3 Border ropeThe border rope shall pass through each mesh at the edges of the net, whether sewn or not.The joint between the ends of a border rope shall be secured against unintentional becoming undone. This can beachieved e.g. by splicing. Mesh rope shall be tested in accordance with 7.36.1.4 Other ropesThe ends of all ropes used in safety nets shall be secured against unravelling, see Figure 5.The dimensional inspection of the mesh size shall be conducted in accordance with 7.2.The internal length of a loop shall be at least 150 mm, see Figure 5.6.1.5 Test meshSafety nets shall be provided with at least one test mesh. The test mesh shall consist of at least three meshes. Thetest mesh shall be loosely threaded through the meshes of the net and be attached in the border area. The testmesh shall come from the same production run as that used for the related net. In order to ensure that the testmesh can be properly identified with the mesh rope, seals with the same identity number shall be fixed to the testmesh and to the related net.6.1.6 Supporting frameworkWhen erected, the framework shall be such that the net can be supported by fixing each mesh rope directly oranchored to it along the edge at intervals not exceeding 2,5 m, using the border rope.While the distance between the gallows, see Figure 4, shall be
5,00 m, the border rope at the top is supporteddue to the construction at these distances.6.2 Tensile strength of ropes6.2.1 Border ropeThe Rope K shall have a minimum tensile breaking force of 30,0 kN when tested according to 7.5.The joint between the ends of the Rope K shall have a minimum tensile breaking force of 24,0 kN.The Rope P shall have a minimum tensile breaking force of 20,0 kN when tested according to 7.5. The jointbetween the ends of the Rope P shall have a minimum tensile breaking force of 16,0 kN.The ropes K and P shall be twisted or braided.NOTE 1The values of the minimum tensile breaking force include a safety factor of 2,0.NOTE 2Twist means: One thread round about another to form a cord;

L or M shall have a minimum tensile breaking force of 30,0 kN when tested according to 7.5.
