Overview

prEN ISO 10256-5 (ISO/DIS 10256-5:2025) covers performance requirements and test methods for neck laceration protectors used in ice hockey. This draft international standard is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 10256-1:2024 and supersedes earlier editions, updating definitions and test procedures to align the 10256 series. It applies to protective devices worn by ice hockey players and referees to reduce the frequency and severity of neck lacerations from skate blades. The document explicitly excludes protection from puck, stick or other object impacts.

Key Topics

  • Scope and application

    • Applicable to neck laceration protectors worn by players and referees.
    • Not intended for impact protection from pucks or sticks.
  • Types and design

    • Defines two protector types (Type E1 with a bib; Type E2 without) and introduces terms such as neck part, bib, model, and neck form.
    • Requires design that prevents removable parts in the protected area and ensures adjustment systems operate across size ranges.
  • Ergonomics and innocuousness

    • Ergonomic requirements reference ISO 10256-1:2024.
    • Materials and design must not harm the wearer or other players; materials are subject to innocuousness verification.
  • Coverage, stability and cut resistance

    • Coverage criteria are specified relative to neck forms and defined protected areas.
    • New requirements and tests for protector stability and recovery are included to ensure consistent performance in use.
    • Cut resistance verification is mandated, referencing appropriate mechanical test methods.
  • Markings, information and test reporting

    • Marking and user information requirements are specified, with test report content defined to support conformity assessment.

Applications

  • Manufacturers: to design and validate neck laceration protectors that meet standardized performance and testing criteria.
  • Test laboratories: to perform sampling, conditioning and the specified test methods for ergonomics, material innocuousness, coverage, stability and cut resistance.
  • Regulators and procurement: to reference harmonized requirements for player and referee protective equipment.

Practical benefits include improved product consistency, clearer performance claims (cut resistance, coverage, stability), and harmonization with ISO 10256-1:2024 requirements across the 10256 series.

Related Standards

  • ISO 10256-1:2024 - Protective equipment for use in ice hockey - General requirements
  • ISO 13997:2023 - Determination of resistance to cutting by sharp objects (referenced for cut resistance tests)
  • ISO 6330:2021 - Textile domestic washing and drying procedures (referenced for conditioning)
  • Annex ZA in the draft - relationship to Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment

For implementation and conformity queries, users are advised to consult the draft text (ISO/DIS 10256-5:2025) and their national standards body for publication status and national adoption.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

iv
ISO/DIS 10256-5.2:2025(en)
Introduction
Ice hockey is a high speed, collision sport in which there is a risk of injury.
By playing this sport, participants accept the risk of serious injury, paralysis and/or death.
The intention of neck protection used in ice hockey is to reduce the frequency and severity of lacerations to
the neck. The protective function is such that the penetration of a skate blade is counteracted.
