Overview

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 specifies the requirements and test methods for neck laceration protectors intended for use in ice hockey. This standard, developed by SIST in alignment with ISO/FDIS 10256-5:2026 and the broader EN ISO 10256 series, aims to enhance player and referee safety by mitigating the risk of neck lacerations caused primarily by skate blades during play. It defines types, performance criteria, and testing methodologies for neck protectors and is intended for use in conjunction with ISO 10256-1:2024 (General Requirements for Ice Hockey Protective Equipment).

Key Topics

  • Scope of Protection: Focuses on devices worn around the neck to reduce the risk of cuts or lacerations from skate blades during ice hockey. Impact protection from pucks, sticks, or other objects is outside its scope.
  • Types of Neck Laceration Protectors:
    • Type E1: Includes a bib for extended coverage of the anterior thoracic region.
    • Type E2: Provides protected area coverage limited to the neck.
  • Performance Requirements:
    • Ergonomics - Must ensure comfort and proper fit.
    • Innocuousness - Protective gear must not have harmful materials, dangerous design features, or removable parts in the protected area.
    • Coverage - Must cover designated areas on standardized neck forms.
    • Stability & Recovery - Must maintain protective position after disturbance and recover promptly.
    • Cut Resistance - Must meet standardized resistance when subjected to skate blade-like test conditions.
  • Marking & Information: Clear labeling of size range and usage instructions, including specific warnings about protection limits.
  • User Information: Products must carry statements clarifying they only reduce risks from laceration in the protected area and that improper use or fit reduces protective efficacy.

Applications

The primary application of kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 is in the design, manufacturing, and regulatory approval of neck laceration protectors for ice hockey. Key users and stakeholders include:

  • Manufacturers: Ensures products meet minimum safety and performance benchmarks, including materials testing and product labeling requirements.
  • Testing laboratories: Provides a basis for test protocols to verify compliance, including ergonomics, material safety, dimensional coverage, and cut resistance.
  • Ice Hockey Associations and Leagues: Facilitates adoption of standardized protective equipment to improve safety regulations and reduce injury risks for players and referees.
  • Regulators and Accreditation Bodies: Offers an harmonized standard for referencing in procurement, certification, and conformity assessment frameworks, particularly in the context of European PPE legislation (Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment).
  • End Users (Players and Referees): Results in better-informed equipment choices and increased personal safety when participating in ice hockey at any level.

Related Standards

kSIST FprEN ISO 10256-5:2026 should be used in conjunction with other relevant standards, including:

  • ISO 10256-1:2024: General requirements for protective equipment used in ice hockey, covering aspects such as materials, ergonomics, marking, and user information.
  • ISO 13997:2023: Protective clothing - Determination of resistance to cutting by sharp objects; referenced for cut resistance test methods.
  • ISO 6330:2021: Textiles - Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing; establishes product conditioning requirements before testing.
  • Other Parts in the ISO 10256 Series: These standards collectively address a full range of ice hockey protective equipment, such as helmets, facial protection, mouthguards, body protection, and lower leg guards.

Practical Value

Adoption and implementation of this standard ensure that neck laceration protectors for ice hockey provide verified safety performance, facilitate international market access for manufacturers, and help leagues and associations maintain high safety standards. Compliance demonstrates due diligence in reducing risk, supports conformity with EU PPE requirements, and underpins risk management strategies for all participants in the sport.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 10256-5:2017), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— Clause 3.2 definitions have been modified for clarification;
— Clause 4.1 has been added to describe the two types of neck laceration protectors;
— Clause 4.3.2 has been modified;
— Clause 4.6 a new requirement and test procedure for protector stability and recovery have been added;
— Clause 4.7 has been modified to clarify cut resistance;
— Clause 5.1.2.3 has been modified to clarify sample preparation;

Introduction
Ice hockey is a high speed, collision sport in which there is a risk of injury.
By playing this sport, participants accept the risk of serious injury, paralysis and/or death.
The intention of neck protection used in ice hockey is to reduce the frequency and severity of lacerations to
the neck. The protective function is such that the penetration of a skate blade is counteracted.
