Overview - EN ISO 16993:2016 (Solid biofuels conversion)

EN ISO 16993:2016 (ISO 16993:2016) provides standardized formulae to convert analytical results for solid biofuels between commonly used reporting bases: as‑analysed (air‑dried), as‑received, dry, and dry, ash‑free (daf). The standard explains required corrections for parameters that are directly affected by moisture (notably hydrogen and net calorific value) and supplies informative Annexes with integrity checks, unit conversion factors and guidance on validation parameters. EN ISO 16993:2016 is intended to ensure consistent, comparable reporting of analytical data across laboratories, fuel producers and users.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Conversion formulae: Table 1 contains the general formulae to calculate multiplication factors for converting analytical values among bases (ad, ar, d, daf).
  • Moisture handling: Details when and how to apply moisture-related corrections before or after basis conversion.
  • Hydrogen correction: Specifies removal of moisture‑bound hydrogen from air‑dried results before conversion (uses a factor derived from water composition - shown in the standard).
  • Oxygen calculation: Oxygen on a dry basis may be calculated by difference using carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, chlorine and ash results.
  • Net calorific value (NCV): NCV reported on a moist basis includes a heat-of-vaporization correction (24.43 J/g per percentage point of moisture). The standard prescribes how to undo and reapply this correction when changing bases.
  • Integrity and validation tools:
    • Annex A: tools for integrity checks of analytical results (consistency checks).
    • Annex B: tables with units and conversion factors.
    • Annex C: guidance on validation parameters consistent with ISO/TC 238 analytical standards.
  • Normative references: The standard references analytical methods such as ISO 16948, ISO 16994, ISO 18122, ISO 18125, and ISO 18134 parts.

Applications - who uses EN ISO 16993:2016

  • Analytical laboratories reporting solid biofuel composition and calorific values.
  • Fuel producers and traders who must present product specifications on different contractual bases (dry, as‑received, daf).
  • Power plant operators and boiler manufacturers for fuel quality assessment and combustion calculations.
  • Regulators and standards bodies harmonizing test reports and compliance data.
  • Quality managers implementing consistent reporting and data exchange.

  • ISO 18122 - Ash content
  • ISO 18125 - Calorific value
  • ISO 18134 (parts 1–3) - Moisture determination

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the

ISO 16993:2016(E)
Introduction
In the International Standards covering the analysis of solid biofuels, it is generally specified that the
determination is intended to be carried out on the air-dried or in air-equilibrated general analysis test
sample prepared according to ISO 14780. However, in making use of these analyses, it is necessary to
express the results on dry basis and sometimes, also on some other basis. The bases in common use for
solid biofuels are “air-dried” (sometimes stated as “as determined”), “as received” (sometimes stated
“as sampled” or “as delivered”), “dry”, and “dry, ash free”.

In order to convert an analytical result expressed as one basis to another basis, it is multiplied by a
factor calculated from the appropriate formulae (see Table 1), after insertion of the requisite numerical
values into the formula in question.
5 Calculations for analyses of solid biofuels
5.1 General
Most analytical values on a particular basis can be converted to any other basis by multiplying it by a
factor calculated from the appropriate formula given in Table 1, after insertion of the requisite numerical
values into the formula in question. However, for some parameters, there is a direct involvement of the
moisture content. In these cases, a correction (as specified in 5.2) of the air-dried result shall be carried
out before calculation to dry basis or dry, ash-free b
