This European Standard defines the minimum fitness for purpose requirements for valves to be used in, or connected to, water supply pipe systems above or below ground (see prEN 805, including the meter valves), and also suitable for pipe systems carrying raw or treated water (e.g. for irrigation, for fire fighting).

Expansion valves are intended for fitting to the cold potable water supply of storage water heaters, having a maximum distribution temperature of 95 °C, for all energy sources.
Expansion valves do not control the temperature and alone do not constitute the protection required for storage water heaters. Expansion valves limit pressure, in the water heaters to what they are fitted, that is produced by thermal expansion of the water.
NOTE   The use of the device specified in this document does not override the need to use controls (e.g. thermostats and cut-outs) which act directly on the power sources of water heaters (for more information see Annex A).

EN 1487 specifies dimensions, materials and performance requirements (including methods of test) for hydraulic safety groups, of nominal sizes from DN 15 to DN 25, having working pressures1) from 0,1 MPa (1 bar) to 0,7 MPa (7 bar). Hydraulic safety groups are intended for fitting to the potable water supply of storage water heaters, having a maximum storage temperature of 95°C. Hydraulic safety groups limit the pressure in hot water heaters, prevent the backflow of water into the main circuit and prevent the discharged water to get into contact with the water in the water heater. Hydraulic safety groups do not control the temperature. They ensure the hydraulic safety of water heaters if the mechanical resistance of the water heater remains at least equal to the rating pressure. NOTE The use of the device specified in this European Standard does not override the need to use controls (e.g. thermostats and cut-outs) which act directly on the power sources of water heaters.

This Part of EN 12201 specifies the characteristics of valves or valve bodies made from polyethylene (PE) intended for the conveyance of water intended for human consumption, including raw water prior to treatment.
It also specifies the test parameters for the test methods referred to in this standard.
NOTE 1   Valves made from material other than polyethylene (PE) designed for the supply of water intended for human consumption to a relevant standard(s) can be used in PE piping systems conforming to prEN 12201 when they have relevant PE connection ends for butt fusion or electrofusion (see prEN 12201-3).
In conjunction with other Parts of prEN 12201 it is applicable to PE valves, their joints and to joints with components of PE and other materials intended to be used under the following conditions:
a)  a maximum operating pressure, MOP, up to and including 25 bar;
b)  an operating temperature of 20 °C as reference temperature.
NOTE 2   For applications operating at constant temperatures greater than 20 °C and up to 40 °C, see annex A of prEN 12201-1:1999.
prEN 12201 covers a range of maximum operating pressures and gives requirements concerning colours and additives.
NOTE 3   It is the responsibility of the purchaser to make the appropriate selections from these aspects, taking into account their particular requirements and any relevant national guidance or regulations and installation practices or codes.
This Part of EN 12201 covers valves for pipes with a nominal outside diameter dn £ 225 mm.

In conjunction with ISO 1452-1, ISO 1452-2, ISO 1452-3 and ISO 1452-5 it is applicable to PVC-U valves with components of PVC-U, other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for the following: a) water mains and services buried in ground; b) conveyance of water above ground for both outside and inside buildings; c) buried and above-ground drainage and sewerage under pressure. It is applicable to valves in piping systems intended for the supply of water under pressure up to and including 25 °C (cold water) intended for human consumption and for general purposes as well as for waste water under pressure. This part of ISO 1452 is also applicable to valves for the conveyance of water and waste water up to and including 45 °C. For temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C, Figure A.1 of ISO 1452-2:2009 applies. This part of ISO 1452 is also applicable to valves for the conveyance of water and waste water up to and including 45 °C. For temperatures between 25 °C and 45 °C, Figure A.1 of ISO 1452-2:2009 applies. This part of ISO 1452 is applicable to valves of the following types: - valves for solvent cementing; - valves for elastomeric ring seal joints; - valves for flanged joints.
