Overview

prEN IEC 60794-1-127:2025 specifies the Indoor simulated installation test (Method E27) for optical fibre cables. Published as part of the IEC 60794-1-1xx series, this mechanical test method is intended to reproduce demanding indoor routing conditions - tight corners, attachment points and cable storage - to assess cable robustness and optical performance for telecommunication and hybrid optical/electrical cables. The method replaces and revises the former E27 in IEC 60794-1-21:2015 and is primarily aimed at evaluating cables that use bending loss insensitive fibres.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to optical fibre cables used with telecommunication equipment and cables combining optical fibres and electrical conductors.
  • Sample length: A continuous cable long enough for the procedure; a minimum of 100 m is recommended.
  • Apparatus: Simulated wall/fixture (stud or substrate) with sharp corners and attachment points. Metallic corners are recommended to avoid unwanted indentation artifacts.
  • Test sequence (summary):
    • Multiple tight corner bends (14 × 90° corners, 1 mm apparatus corner radius) with minimal manual tension
    • Single 90° corner bend under 2 kg load
    • Single 90° corner bend under rated residual load
    • Two 10 mm mandrel wraps
    • 30 attachment points (staples, ties, adhesives as specified)
  • Optical monitoring: If required, use optical monitoring per IEC 60793-1-46; measure attenuation before and after the test and calculate change in attenuation.
  • Acceptance guidance: Typical stapling-related attenuation change recommended not to exceed 0.20 dB at 1550 nm (single‑mode) and 0.40 dB at 1300 nm (multimode). Final acceptance criteria are specified in the relevant product specification.
  • Customizable parameters: substrate type, number/radius of bends, attachment method, test temperature, residual load, and acceptance limits must be stated in the product specification.

Practical applications

  • Validates cable designs for demanding indoor deployments where routing around sharp corners, staples and constrained storage is expected (e.g., office, residential and data‑centre interiors).
  • Demonstrates mechanical robustness and optical performance stability after simulated installation stress.
  • Useful during product development, quality control, type testing and supplier qualification for indoor optical fibre cables.

Who should use this standard

  • Cable manufacturers and R&D teams designing indoor optical fibre cables
  • Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Telecommunications installers, specifiers and procurement teams writing product acceptance criteria
  • Standards committees and compliance engineers assessing mechanical/optical resilience

30 FOREWORD
31 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
32 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
33 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
34 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
35 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
36 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
37 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
38 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
39 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
40 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
41 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
42 interested IEC National Committees.
43 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
44 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
45 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
46 misinterpretation by any end user.
47 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
48 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
49 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
50 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
51 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
52 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
53 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
54 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
55 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
56 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
57 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
58 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
59 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
60 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
61 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
