Energy efficiency of industrial trucks - Test methods - Part 4: Variable-reach rough-terrain trucks (ISO/DIS 23308-4:2025)

This document specifies the method of fuel consumption measurement for rough terrain- truck variable-reach trucks as defined in ISO 5053-1, herein after referred to as trucks. It does not apply to slewing trucks having a movement of more than 5° either side of the longitudinal axis.
This part is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 23308-1. Where the requirements of this part differ from that in part 1, requirements in this part 4 will take precedence.

Overview

The draft international standard oSIST prEN ISO 23308-4:2025:2025 focuses on defining a consistent and reliable method for measuring fuel consumption in variable-reach rough-terrain industrial trucks. Developed by ISO Technical Committee 110/SC 4 and circulated by CEN, this document specifically targets trucks as defined in ISO 5053-1, excluding those with slewing movements greater than 5° from the longitudinal axis. It supplements and takes precedence over ISO 23308-1 where requirements differ.

This standard aims to promote the energy efficiency of industrial trucks by establishing uniform test protocols that enable manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and users to assess fuel consumption performance accurately. It forms part 4 of the ISO 23308 series dedicated to energy efficiency test methods across various truck types.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: Addresses rough-terrain trucks with variable reach but excludes slewing trucks exceeding ±5° motion.
  • Test Conditions: Specifies requirements for test areas (flat, hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt), test tracks, load conditions (generally 70% rated load), and truck readiness (e.g., new tires, manufacturer settings).
  • Testing Procedure:
    • Defines truck duty phases such as traveling, idling, pick and carry, and bucket operation.
    • Emphasizes repeatability and comparability for fuel consumption measurement.
  • Equipment Setup: Requires trucks to be representative production samples with appropriate run-in times and in fully functional condition.
  • Calculation of Emissions: Includes methods to calculate CO emissions alongside fuel consumption.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Mandates detailed reporting and declaration for transparency and traceability.
  • Normative References: Relies on established ISO documents for vocabulary, safety requirements, and general energy efficiency test methods.

Applications

This standard is highly relevant for:

  • Industrial Truck Manufacturers: Facilitates design and validation of energy-efficient rough-terrain variable-reach trucks, enabling market competitiveness through standardized performance data.
  • Market Surveillance Authorities: Provides a benchmark for regulating compliance with energy consumption limits and environmental standards.
  • Fleet Operators and Industrial Users: Enables informed procurement decisions based on standardized fuel efficiency metrics, optimizing operational costs and reducing environmental impact.
  • Consultants and Service Providers: Offers a reliable framework for advising on energy optimization and sustainable industrial vehicle usage.

By implementing these test methods, stakeholders can assess and compare fuel usage, enforce regulations, and implement eco-friendly technologies such as eco-modes designed to reduce consumption.

Related Standards

  • ISO 23308-1:2020 - General test methods for energy efficiency of industrial trucks, acting as the foundational document to which this part 4 is supplementary.
  • ISO 5053-1 - Vocabulary defining the types of industrial trucks, crucial for clarifying the trucks covered.
  • ISO 10896-1 - Safety requirements and verification for variable-reach rough-terrain trucks.
  • ISO 3691-1 & ISO 3691-2 - Specifications regarding rated load, lift height, and load center distances relevant for test load settings.

This draft standard helps ensure consistency in measuring fuel consumption across rough-terrain variable-reach trucks, supporting the global push towards energy-efficient industrial vehicles.

Introduction
The ISO 23308 series deals with energy efficiency of industrial trucks including batteries and chargers.
ISO 23308-1 contains the procedures to determine the efficiency of trucks, traction batteries and battery
chargers. The other parts provide a specific test cycle for different truck types.
NOTE The test cycles are based on the VDI 2198 guideline. This guideline is widely accepted by the industry and is
used to measure the energy consumption of electric industrial trucks and internal combustion (IC) industrial trucks.
