Road and airfield surface characteristics - Test methods - Part 1:Measurement of pavement surface macrotexture depth using a volumetric patch technique

This European Standard specifies a method for determining the average depth of pavement surface
macrotexture by careful application of a known volume of material on the surface and subsequent
measurement of the total area covered. The technique is designed to provide an average depth value of only
the pavement macrotexture and is considered insensitive to pavement microtexture characteristics.
This test method is suitable for field tests to determine the average macrotexture depth of a pavement
surface. When used in conjunction with other physical tests, the macrotexture depth values derived from this
test method can be used to determine the pavement skid resistance capability, noise characteristics and the
suitability of paving materials or finishing techniques. When used with other tests, care should be taken that all
tests are applied at the same location.

Značilnosti cestnih in letaliških površin - Preskusne metode - 1. del: Merjenje hrapavosti površine z volumetrično metodo

Overview

EN 13036-1:2010 is a CEN European Standard that specifies a field test method to measure pavement macrotexture depth using a volumetric (patch) technique - commonly known as the sand‑patch or glass‑sphere patch method. The procedure yields an average mean texture depth (MTD) value representative of pavement macrotexture (validity range 0.25 mm to 5 mm MPD) and is designed to be insensitive to pavement microtexture. The standard is suitable for roads and airfields and supports assessments of skid resistance, noise potential and the suitability of paving materials or surface finishing techniques.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: apply a known volume of calibrated material to a clean, dry surface, spread into a circular patch to fill surface voids, then measure the patch diameter and calculate MTD.
  • Materials and apparatus:
    • Solid glass spheres (graded: ≥90 % by weight passing 0.25 mm sieve and retained on 0.18 mm sieve complying with ISO 565).
    • Calibrated sample container (typical internal volume ~25 ml / 25 000 mm3 ±150 mm3).
    • Spreader disc (≈65 mm diameter with rubber plate ~2 mm thick and mass ≈305 g).
    • Brushes, portable windshield, ruler/scale and (recommended) laboratory balance (0.1 g sensitivity).
  • Procedure essentials:
    • Clean an appropriately homogeneous, dry test area.
    • Fill the container with material, pour onto surface and spread into a circular patch using the disc.
    • Measure patch diameter at a minimum of four equally spaced points and average.
    • Perform at least four randomly spaced measurements on a given pavement section; the arithmetic mean is the reported MTD.
  • Calculation: MTD is calculated from sample volume V and average patch diameter D using MTD = 4V / (π D^2).
  • Precision: repeatability can be as low as ~1% (same operator) and reproducibility ~2% (different operators); site‑to‑site variability may be substantially larger (examples show up to ~27 %).

Applications and users

  • Practical uses:
    • Assessing pavement skid resistance capability when combined with other tests.
    • Estimating road/airfield noise characteristics related to surface texture.
    • Evaluating paving materials and finishing techniques during quality control and acceptance testing.
    • Routine field surveys, research and comparative studies of surface treatments.
  • Typical users:
    • Highway and airport pavement engineers, maintenance crews, materials laboratories, road safety auditors and researchers in transport acoustics or friction.
