This Technical Specification (CEN/TS) was approved by CEN on 30 January 2006 for provisional application.
The period of validity of this CEN/TS is limited initially to three years. After two years the members of CEN will be requested to submit their
comments, particularly on the question whether the CEN/TS can be converted into a European Standard.
CEN members are required to announce the existence of this CEN/TS in the same way as for an EN and to make the CEN/TS available
promptly at national level in an appropriate form. It is permissible to keep conflicting national standards in force (in parallel to the CEN/TS)

1 Scope
This Technical Specification specifies a method for the selective determination of dicyandiamide (DCD) in
addition to all the other forms of nitrogen fixations, particularly in fertilizers to which DCD has been added as a
nitrification inhibiting agent.

3 Principle
The sample is dissolved or suspended in water, using an ultrasonic bath. To the filtered solution, methyl
dicyandiamide is added as the internal standard, the solution is transferred onto a C18 reversed-phase
column using a bypass injector and then separated. For the detection an UV-detector is used at a wavelength
of 220 nm.
4 Reagents
Use only reagents of recognized analytical grade, and water conforming to grade 2 of EN ISO 3696.
4.1 Dicyandiamide standard solution
Weigh 50 mg of dicyandiamide of known purity into a 1 000 ml volumetric flask and dissolve in water, and
make up the volume to the mark. Pipette 10 ml of this solution into a 100 ml volumetric flask and, after having
added 10 ml of internal standard solution (4.2), make up the volume to the mark with water.
