Overview
EN 50632-2-22:2015/A1:2021 - Amendment A1 to the 2015 European Standard - defines particular dust measurement requirements for electric motor‑operated cut-off machines and wall chasers. Part 2-22 is intended to be used together with EN 50632‑1:2015 and applies to mains- or battery‑supplied tools, with or without dust extraction, where mineral dust (including silica) or wood dust is expected. The 2021 amendment clarifies operating conditions, test set-ups and figures used in laboratory dust emission testing.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Measurement of airborne dust emissions from cut-off machines and wall chasers during representative cutting operations.
- Test materials & conditioning:
- Cut‑off machines: concrete slabs (EN 1339:2003 dimensions and classes) stored dry for specified periods.
- Wall chasers: calcium‑silicate blocks with defined density, thickness and pre‑storage requirements.
- Test procedures:
- Defined slot depths and cutting patterns (e.g., number and length of cuts; horizontal vs vertical portions for wall chasers).
- Minimum total cutting lengths per test depending on tool rated capacity or maximum depth of cut.
- Operator positioning and laboratory set‑up according to revised Figures 101 and 102.
- Tool setup:
- Use of new or freshly re‑sharpened diamond wheels as specified by the manufacturer.
- Speed and feed force settings: speed per cutting material, feed force sufficient for stable, representative operation.
- Instrumentation: placement of dust samplers with specified vertical distance from the workpiece (see EN 50632‑1 for general measurement methods).
- Purpose of amendment: improvements and clarifications based on practical testing experience.
Applications and users
This standard is practical for:
- Manufacturers of cut‑off machines and wall chasers - to quantify emissions and validate dust‑control designs.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - for repeatable, comparable dust emission testing and compliance verification.
- Occupational health & safety professionals and consultants - to evaluate exposure risks and specify control measures (dust extraction, PPE).
- Product developers and purchasers - to compare performance of extraction systems and document safer tool choices.
Practical benefits: standardized test methods enable consistent assessment of airborne dust emissions (including silica), support product improvement, demonstrate compliance, and inform workplace risk assessments.
