Overview

prEN IEC 60794-1-102:2025 - "Optical fibre cables - Part 1‑102: Generic specification - Basic optical cable test procedures - Mechanical test methods - Abrasion, Method E2" - defines standardized abrasion test procedures for optical fibre cables. Published as a CLC/IEC committee draft (CDV) and forming part of the IEC 60794 series, this document helps manufacturers, test laboratories and purchasers evaluate the abrasion resistance of cable sheaths (Method E2A) and markings (Method E2B).

Keywords: optical fibre cable test, abrasion resistance, IEC 60794, Method E2, E2A, E2B, sheath abrasion, cable markings.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to optical fibre cables used in telecommunications, including hybrid cables containing electrical conductors.
  • Sample preparation: Typical sample length 750 mm; surface cleaned with a soft wet towel and air-dried before testing.
  • Environmental conditions: Tests performed under expanded standard atmospheric conditions per IEC 60794‑1‑2.
  • Method E2A (sheath abrasion):
    • Abrading over (40 ± 1) mm length at (55 ± 5) cycles/min.
    • Abrading edge: steel needle nominally 1.0 mm diameter (unless otherwise specified).
    • Abrading load: 4 N (unless otherwise specified).
    • Four test positions per sample (move forward 100 mm between tests; rotate 90° between tests).
    • Requirement: no perforation of sheath after testing.
  • Method E2B (marking abrasion):
    • Two apparatus options:
      • Method 1: same as E2A but applied to printed markings.
      • Method 2: wool/wiping felt soaked with water, stroke length 100 mm at 6–12 cycles/min, typical normal force 5 N.
    • Requirement: all markings must remain legible after testing.
  • Reporting: Test reports must include sample description, method, number of cycles, force, stroke distance, needle diameter (if used), results and any procedure deviations.

Applications and who uses it

  • Cable manufacturers: qualify sheath materials and printing/marking processes for durability.
  • Independent test laboratories: produce reproducible test data for conformity and product comparisons.
  • Procurement and QA teams: specify abrasion resistance requirements in purchase contracts and acceptance testing.
  • Standards and compliance officers: reference for product certification and interoperability claims.

Related standards

  • IEC 60794‑1‑2 - general guidance for basic optical cable test procedures (normative reference).
  • Part of the IEC 60794 series (optical fibre cables).
  • This edition replaces Method E2 previously contained in IEC 60794‑1‑21:2015.

Use this standard to ensure consistent, repeatable abrasion testing of optical fibre cable sheaths and markings, improving product reliability and easing verification in procurement and compliance workflows.

36 FOREWORD
37 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
38 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
39 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
40 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
41 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
42 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
43 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
44 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
45 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
46 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
47 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
48 interested IEC National Committees.
49 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
50 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
51 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
52 misinterpretation by any end user.
53 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
54 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
55 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
56 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
57 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
58 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
59 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
60 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
61 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
62 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
63 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
64 Publications.
65 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
66 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
