Overview
EN 15285:2008 (CEN) specifies requirements and test methods for agglomerated stone modular tiles intended for use as flooring and stairs (internal and external). It covers modular tile dimensions (≤ 600 × 600 mm, thickness 6–20 mm), geometric tolerances, surface finishes, performance characteristics, conformity assessment and marking. The standard excludes terrazzo tiles covered by EN 13748-1 and EN 13748-2.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Definitions and scope: modular tile definition, declared dimensions and intended end-use (fixed by mortar or adhesives).
- Geometric characteristics (measured per EN 14617‑16):
- Length/width tolerance ±0.5 mm; thickness ±0.7 mm
- Straightness ±0.3 mm; rectangularity ±0.9 mm; flatness tolerance ±2% (referred to length)
- Typical bevel: 45° angle, 1.0 mm width ±0.7 mm (unless otherwise specified)
- Surface finish: finishes must extend uniformly to edges; examples include textured (mould-copied), fine ground (F220), matt (e.g. F400) and highly polished surfaces.
- Performance characteristics and classifications (declared and tested where required):
- Water absorption (W1–W4), flexural strength (F1–F4), abrasion resistance (A1–A4), chemical resistance (C1–C4) - classification tables are provided for design and specification.
- Additional properties: slip resistance, reaction to fire, thermal conductivity, thermal shock and frost resistance, impact resistance, dimensional stability, electrical resistivity.
- Test methods referenced: EN 14617 series (apparent density, flexural strength, abrasion, freeze/thaw, thermal shock, impact, chemical resistance, thermal expansion, dimensional stability), EN 14231 (pendulum slip test), EN 13501‑1 (reaction to fire), EN 12664 (thermal performance).
- Conformity & marking: procedures for Initial Type Testing (ITT), Factory Production Control (FPC), CE marking and requirements related to the EU Construction Products Directive (informative Annex ZA).
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of agglomerated stone tiles use EN 15285 to define product specifications, declare performance values and implement factory production control.
- Architects, specifiers and designers rely on the standard when selecting tiles for internal/external flooring and stair applications, ensuring durability, slip resistance and fire/thermal performance.
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies apply the referenced EN test methods to verify compliance.
- Contractors and installers refer to dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements for proper installation with mortar or adhesives.
