Overview
EN 916:2003 is a CEN European Standard for gymnastic equipment that specifies requirements and test methods for vaulting boxes, including safety provisions. It defines functional characteristics, classification by design, dimensional limits for padded top surfaces, and specific safety tests for stability, strength and durability. EN 916:2003 is intended to be read in conjunction with EN 913 (general safety requirements for gymnastic equipment).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & classification
- Covers five types of vaulting boxes (types 1–5) by design: rectangular (with sections), rectangular mini, pyramidal, padded vaulting tables with frame, and other compliant designs.
- Top surface dimensions
- Length: 395 mm (min) to 1 605 mm (max)
- Width: 395 mm (min) to 705 mm (max)
- Padded top performance
- Tested per EN 913 Annex C with a 300 mm drop height; peak acceleration shall not exceed 500 m/s² (50 g).
- Stability
- When tested, the vaulting box must not rotate or have sections separate under a horizontal force equal to 20% of the self weight, with a minimum of 70 N. Test conducted at maximum height and conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C for at least 3 hours.
- Strength
- Whole box: apply 2 850 N vertical load at the centre of the top for the specified duration; sections: 1 700 N applied at centre of each long side. Equipment must show no loose bonds, breaking or cracking.
- Durability of construction
- Section-drop test: drop a section onto concrete from 120 mm perpendicular to its diagonal axis, five times per corner; post-test diagonal change must not exceed 3 mm and no loose joints or breakage allowed.
- Marking & warnings
- Manufacturer marking to comply with EN 913; equipment must carry a warning that use should be under controlled supervision.
Applications - who uses EN 916:2003
- Manufacturers and designers of vaulting boxes and gymnastic equipment (product design and compliance)
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies (safety and performance testing)
- Procurement officers for schools, sports clubs and public facilities (specifying safe equipment)
- Facility managers, coaches and safety officers (selection and maintenance guidance)
- Regulators and standards committees (harmonization and certification)
Related standards
- EN 913 - Gymnastic equipment: general safety requirements and test methods (referenced and to be used in conjunction).
- Produced under CEN/TC 136 (Sports, playground and other recreational equipment).
Practical takeaway: EN 916:2003 provides clear, measurable tests and dimensional limits to ensure vaulting boxes meet consistent safety, stability and durability criteria - essential for manufacturers, testers and purchasers focused on compliant gymnastic equipment.

SIST EN 916:2003 establishes a comprehensive framework for ensuring safety and functionality in gymnastic equipment, specifically focusing on vaulting boxes. The standard delineates clear functional requirements and safety benchmarks necessary for five distinct types of vaulting boxes, ensuring that both manufacturers and users adhere to high performance and safety protocols. One of the primary strengths of this standard is its thorough specification of functional requirements that cater to gymnastic needs. By detailing expectations under clause 3, it ensures that the vaulting boxes support athletes effectively, enhancing their performance while minimizing the risk of injury. Furthermore, the inclusion of specific safety requirements alongside the general safety requirements outlined in EN 913 creates a robust safety net. This dual-layered approach not only safeguards the well-being of gymnasts but also fosters trust among coaches, gymnasts, and governing bodies regarding the reliability of the equipment. The relevance of SIST EN 916:2003 extends beyond just technical specifications. In an environment where gymnastic standards are critical for both competitive and training settings, this standard supports the development of vaulting boxes that adhere to international safety expectations. The standard promotes a baseline of quality, contributing to the overall improvement of gymnastic practices and equipment safety across Europe.
