Overview

EN 13302:2018 - "Bitumen and bituminous binders - Determination of dynamic viscosity of bituminous binder using a rotating spindle apparatus" (CEN) specifies a laboratory method to measure the dynamic viscosity of a wide range of bituminous binders using a coaxial rotating spindle viscometer. It covers modified and unmodified binders, bituminous emulsions, cut-back and fluxed binders, and allows measurements across standard and user-defined temperatures and shear rates. The standard also cautions about hazardous materials and requires users to apply appropriate safety and health practices.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: Torque on a rotating spindle in a sample container is translated into a measure of dynamic viscosity; form factors may be applied to account for geometry.
  • Apparatus:
    • Rotational (coaxial) spindle viscometer or equivalent (DSR use is permitted where appropriate).
    • Appropriate spindles and sample containers designed for coaxial mode.
    • Temperature control device (water/oil jacket or equivalent).
  • Measurement ranges (indicative):
    • Shear rate: 1 s⁻¹ to 10⁴ s⁻¹ (minimum capability 1 s⁻¹ to 200 s⁻¹ required).
    • Dynamic viscosity: 10⁻² Pa·s to 10⁶ Pa·s (minimum capability 10⁻² Pa·s to 10³ Pa·s required).
  • Temperature control tolerances:
    • Emulsions: ±1 °C
    • Other binders: ±0.5 °C up to 100 °C and ±1.0 °C above 100 °C
  • Sample preparation and timing:
    • Sampling under EN 58 and preparation per EN 12594.
    • Heating rules for binders (fluid transfer limits and maximum temperatures up to 230 °C for oxidized bitumen).
    • Typical equilibration and stabilization times before readings; recommended stabilization ~60 ± 5 s.
  • Accuracy and validation:
    • Select spindles so readings fall between 10–90% of spindle torque capacity where possible.
    • For non-Newtonian materials (e.g., polymer-modified bitumens), viscosity is shear-rate dependent - compare only under similar conditions.

Applications

  • Quality control and acceptance testing of asphalt binders and binder components.
  • Product development and formulation of polymer modified bitumen (PMB), cut-backs and fluxed binders.
  • Characterizing bitumen emulsions for application and storage behavior.
  • Supporting pavement design, production QA/QC, and specification compliance where viscosity influences mixing and compaction.

Who uses this standard

  • Asphalt and bitumen manufacturers
  • Materials testing laboratories and quality assurance teams
  • Pavement engineers, mix designers and highway authorities
  • Research and development teams working on binder modification

Related standards

  • EN 58 - Sampling of bituminous binders
  • EN 12594 - Preparation of test samples

EN 13302:2018 is essential for consistent, reproducible viscosity measurement of bituminous binders using a rotating spindle apparatus and for informing material selection and process controls in asphalt production and pavement engineering.

If achievable accuracy is not known from the information given by the manufacturer of the equipment, the spindles should be selected so as to obtain dynamic viscosity readings under torsion torque values which are between 10 % and 90 % of the maximum possible torsion torque of the spindle for the chosen test conditions. Whenever possible, to get a maximum of accuracy, the spindle should always be selected so as to obtain dynamic viscosity readings under torsion torque values which are in the upper working range for the chosen test conditions. For low viscosity materials (typically, for viscosities below 100 be difficult to fulfil these requirements with existing equipment. Lower accuracy is then permitted but needs to be documented while indicating, in the test report, the actually achieved level of accuracy or, if not known, the position of the reading with regard to the working range of the used spindle (Clause 10). NOTE When DSR equipment is used, neither achievable accuracy nor torsion torques ranges are known. In this case, validation of the testing conditions is done directly by the equipment software. 5.3 Sample container, specific to the rotating spindle viscometer, that allows the equipment to be used in coaxial mode and therefore enable the control of shear rate.
