SIST EN IEC 60947-4-1:2019 (IEC 60947-4-1:2018) is the fourth-edition European/International standard for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear covering electromechanical contactors and motor‑starters. It defines requirements for design, rated values, performance and safety for contactors, starters (including Motor Protective Switching Devices - MPSD), actuators and dedicated accessories intended for circuits with rated voltages up to 1 000 V AC or 1 500 V DC. The publication includes a Redline (RLV) version showing technical changes versus the previous edition.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and classification of electromechanical contactors and starters, number of poles and kind of current (AC/DC).
  • Rated and limiting values for main circuits (voltages, currents) and characteristic quantities.
  • Motor Protective Switching Device (MPSD): new requirements and short-circuit breaking tests (Annex P).
  • Safety and functional aspects:
    • General safety provisions and assessment procedures for overload protection used in safety applications (new Annex L).
    • Requirements for limited energy circuits and electronic circuits.
  • Performance and testing:
    • Pickup power measurement and tests related to higher locked-rotor currents for high-efficiency motors.
    • Load monitoring indicators (new Annex O).
    • Short-circuit coordination between an MPSD and associated protective devices (new Annex Q).
  • Application-specific additions:
    • Direct current requirements for photovoltaic (PV) applications (new Annex M).
