This document specifies the method for non-destructive thickness measurement via the magnetic type of electrodeposited nickel coatings, also called “e-nickel”, on magnetic or non-magnetic substrates.
It is possible that the method is not applicable to autocatalytic (electroless) nickel coatings, since these coatings are often non-magnetic due to their chemical composition.
For the purposes of this document, two types of substrates are distinguished:
a) nickel coatings on magnetic substrates (type A coatings);
b) nickel coatings on non-magnetic substrates (type B coatings).
Not all instruments are applicable to both types of coating.
The effective measuring ranges of instruments using the principle of magnetic attraction are up to 50 µm for type A coatings and up to 25 µm for type B coatings.
For instruments using the principle of reluctance, the effective ranges are much greater, up to 1 mm or even more. This method is applicable to both types of coatings.

Dieses Dokument legt das Magnetverfahren für die zerstörungsfreie Messung der Dicke elektrolytisch erzeugter Nickelüberzüge, auch „E-Nickel“ genannt, auf magnetischen oder nicht magnetischen Grundmetallen fest.
Es ist möglich, dass das Verfahren nicht auf autokatalytisch (stromlos) erzeugte Nickelüberzüge anwendbar ist, da diese Beschichtungen aufgrund ihrer chemischen Zusammensetzung häufig nicht magnetisch sind.
Für die Anwendung dieses Dokumentes werden zwei Arten von Nickelüberzügen unterschieden:
a) Nickelüberzüge auf magnetischen Grundmetallen (Überzüge des Typs A);
b) Nickelüberzüge auf nichtmagnetischen Grundmetallen (Überzüge des Typs B).
Nicht alle Geräte sind auf beide Überzugsarten anwendbar.
Der wirksame Messbereich von Geräten, die auf dem Prinzip der magnetischen Anziehung beruhen, beträgt bis zu 50 µm bei Überzügen des Typs A und bis zu 25 µm bei Überzügen des Typs B.
Bei Geräten, die auf dem Prinzip des magnetischen Widerstands beruhen, ist der wirksame Messbereich wesentlich größer, bis zu 1 mm oder mehr. Dieses Verfahren ist auf beide Überzugsarten anwendbar.

Le présent document spécifie une méthode de mesurage non destructif de l’épaisseur des revêtements électrolytiques de nickel de type magnétique, également appelés «e-nickel», sur substrat magnétique ou non magnétique.
Il est possible que la méthode ne soit pas applicable à des revêtements autocatalytiques de nickel (nickelage chimique), car ces revêtements sont souvent non magnétiques du fait de leur composition chimique.
Pour les besoins du présent document, on distingue deux types de substrats:
a) les revêtements de nickel sur substrat magnétique (revêtements de type A);
b) les revêtements de nickel sur substrat non magnétique (revêtements de type B).
Tous les instruments ne peuvent pas être utilisés sur les deux types de revêtements.
Les instruments basés sur le principe de l’attraction magnétique ont une plage de mesure efficace allant jusqu’à 50 µm dans le cas de revêtements de type A et allant jusqu’à 25 µm pour les revêtements de type B.
Pour les instruments utilisant le principe de réluctance, la plage de mesure efficace est bien supérieure, jusqu’à 1 mm ou même plus. La présente méthode est applicable aux deux types de revêtements.

and other inorganic coatings " in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 262 “Metallic and
other inorganic coatings, including for corrosion protection and corrosion testing of metals and alloys”
