Overview

EN 60034-9:2005 - Rotating electrical machines - Part 9: Noise limits specifies how to measure and declare the A-weighted sound power level of rotating electrical machines and sets maximum sound-power limits for factory acceptance testing. It applies to standard-design rotating machines (AC or DC) with rated output from 1 kW up to and including 5 500 kW and maximum speed ≤ 3 750 min‑1. The standard is intended to be used together with EN/IEC 60034-1, -5 and -6 and excludes AC motors supplied by converters (see IEC 60034-17).

Key topics and requirements

  • Sound power measurement methods: Defines measurement procedures for determining sound power level (preferred recommendation: the parallelepiped method for enveloping measurement surfaces).
  • A-weighted sound power limits: Provides maximum A-weighted sound power levels (Tables 1 & 2) for factory acceptance testing and guidance on expected increases at rated load (Table 3 for specific cage-induction motors).
  • Test conditions:
    • Machines tested in their operating position.
    • For multi-speed or variable-speed designs, test at the speed generating the greatest noise.
    • Guidance on mounting (rigid vs. resilient) and necessary test precautions.
  • Sound pressure level guidance: Sound pressure values are not mandatory; Clause 7 gives a method to derive A-weighted sound pressure levels from test readings or from sound power using a parallelepiped surface at 1 m (ISO 3744 reference).
  • Declaration & verification: Procedures for declaring and verifying sound-power values for compliance and procurement.
  • Informative guidance: Measurement surface selection, method for average sound pressure, and uncertainty indication based on test category.
  • Limitations: No corrections for tonal characteristics are provided.

Practical applications

  • Factory acceptance testing: Verify that motors meet the maximum noise limits specified by EN 60034-9:2005 prior to shipment.
  • Procurement & specifications: Buyers and OEMs set contractual noise limits and compare offers on a standardized basis.
  • Acoustic engineering & plant design: Use sound power data for noise mapping, enclosure design, and hearing-protection planning.
  • Quality control & product development: Manufacturers use the standard to benchmark and reduce machine noise to standardized levels.

Who should use this standard

  • Motor manufacturers and test laboratories
  • OEMs, purchasers and procurement engineers
  • Acoustic consultants and health & safety professionals
  • Compliance officers responsible for CE/EN conformity of rotating machinery

Related standards

  • EN/IEC 60034-1 (Rating & performance)
