Part 1: General requirements and measuring methods
FOREWORD
1) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the
National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
sense.
3) In order to promote this international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees having as
yet no national rules, when preparing such rules, should use the IEC recommendations as the fundamental basis for
these rules in so far as national conditions will permit.
4) The desirability is recognized of extending international agreement on these matters through an endeavour to harmonize
national standardization rules with these recommendations in so far as national conditions will permit. The National
Committees pledge their influence towards that end.
5) The IEC has not laid down any procedure concerning marking as an indication of approval and has no respon-
sibility when an item of equipment is declared to comply with one of its recommendations.
PREFACE
This Recommendation has been prepared by Sub-Committee 46B: Waveguides and their accessories,
of Technical Committee No. 46, Cables, wires and waveguides for telecommunications equipment.
The recommendation is issued in four parts, viz.
Part 1: General requirements and measuring methods.
Part 2: Relevant specifications for ordinary rectangular waveguides.
Part 3: Relevant specifications for flat rectangular waveguides.
Part 4: Relevant specifications for circular waveguides.
The present booklet contains Part 1: General requirements and measuring methods.
Part 2, 3 and 4: Relevant specifications for waveguides are issued as IEC Publications 153-2, 153-3
and 153-4 respectively.
The general outline of the recommendation was first discussed during the meeting of a former Working
Group in Paris in November 1956. A draft was prepared which was given full consideration in Stockholm
in May 1957. Successive revised drafts were then prepared and discussed during the meetings held in Lon-
don in May 1958, in Ulm in October 1959, and in Copenhagen in October 1960.
During the latter meeting the draft was accepted for submission to National Committees for approval
under the Six Month's Rule.
Four unfavourable votes were received and several countries submitted comments which were conside-
red during the meeting at Interlaken in June 1961.
Amendments adopted during the latter meeting were circulated to all National Committees under
the Two Months' Procedure and no negative votes were received.

Some editorial comments were discussed and accepted at the meeting in Bucharest in June 1962.

Part 1: General requirements and measuring methods
This recommendation takes into account when necessary IEC Publication 68, Basic Climatic and
Mechanical Robustness Testing Procedures for Components for Electronic Equipment and shall be used
in conjunction with IEC Publication 154, Flanges for Waveguides.
When there is a difference between the general requirements and the relevant specification sheet, the
latter shall prevail.
SCOPE
This recommendation relates to straight hollow metallic tubing for use as waveguides in electronic
equipment.
OBJECT
The aim of this recommendation is to specify for hollow metallic waveguides:
a) the details necessary to ensure compatibility and, as far as essential, interchangeability;
b) test methods;
c) uniform requirements for the electrical and mechanical properties.
It should be noted that no recommendations are made for the materials to be used for waveguides.
The choice of material must be agreed between customer and manufacturer.

SECTION ONE — GENERAL
1.1 TERMINOLOGY
1.1.1 Technical terms
In accordance with the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (I.E.V.), Publication 50 (62).
1.1.2
Definitions relating to testing procedures
1.1.2.1 Type
A type comprises products having similar design features manufactured by the same tech-
niques and falling within the manufacturer's usual range of ratings for these products.
Notes 1.) —
Mounting accessories are ignored, provided they have no significant effect on the test results.
2.) — Ratings cover the combination of:
a) electrical ratings,
b) sizes,
c) environmental group.
3.) — The limits of the range of ratings shall be agreed between customer and manufacturer.
1.1.2.2 Type test
The type test of a product is the complete series of tests to be carried out on a number of
specimens representative of the type, with the object of determining whether a particular
manufacturer can be considered to be able to produce products meeting the specification.
1.1.2.3 Type approval*
Type approval is the decision by the proper authority (the customer himself or his nominee)
that a particular manufacturer can be considered to be able to produce in reasonable quantities
the type meeting the specification.
1.1.2.4 Acceptance tests*
Acceptance tests are tests carried out to determine the acceptability of a consignment on
the basis of an agreement between customer and manufacturer. The agreement shall cover:
a) the sample size,
b) the selection of tests,
c) the extent to which the specimens shall conform to the requirements for the selected tests
of the specification.
Note. —
In cases of divergent test results, the I E C standard test methods shall be used for acceptance tests.
* As these recommendations only cover type tests, these definitions are included only for information.

1.1.2.5 Factory tests*
Factory tests are those tests carried out by the manufacturer to verify that his products meet
the specification.
1.2 TYPE DESIGNATION
The reference indication for waveguides covered by this specification shall comprise the following:
a) the number of the IEC publication (153).
b) the letters "IEC".
c) a hyphen.
d)
a letter indicating the shape of the inside cross-section of the waveguide:
R = Ordinary rectangular (with a ratio of height to width of approximately 1:2)
F = Flat rectangular
C = Circular.
For other types of waveguides this letter indication shall be in accordance with the relevant speci-
fication sheets.
e) a number characterizing a particular size of waveguide. This number indicates a frequency charac-
teristic of the waveguide.

letter "P" shall be used to indicate close tolerance types. (See Note to Clause 2.1.2.1).
Example: 153 IEC-R 100,
denotes a 22.860 x 10.160 mm (0.900 in x 0.400 in) ordinary rectangular waveguide with
a centre frequency of approximately 10 GHz (Gc/s) in the dominant mode.
1.3 STANDARD ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS FOR TESTING
1.3.1 Unless otherwise specified, all tests shall be carried out under "standard atmospheric condi-
tions for testing" as specified in IEC Publication 68, Basic Climatic and Mechanical Robustness
Testing Procedure for Components.
1.3.2 Before the measurements are made, the waveguide shall be stored at the measuring tempera-
ture for a time sufficient to allow the entire waveguide to reach this temperature.
1.3.3 When measurements are made at a temperature other than the specified temperature, the
results shall, where necessary, be corrected to the specified temperature. The ambient tempera-
ture at which the measurements are made shall be stated in the test report.

1.4 VISUAL INSPECTION
The waveguides shall be uniform in composition and in wall thickness and shall be straight and
smooth from end to end. There shall be no burrs, cracks, die marks, chatter marks, dirt, grease or
other irregularities of the surface.
Both inner and outer surface shall have a clean bright appearance in accordance with good current
practice.
SECTION TWO — MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTS
2.1 DIMENSIONS
2.1.1 General
The dimensions of the waveguides and the tolerances thereon shall be in accordance with the
values given on the relevant specification sheets. Dimensions and tolerances shall be given
both in millimetres and inches, indicating in which system of units the dimensions were origi-
nated.
Independent of the system of units, the nominal dimensions of the inside and outside cross-
section shall be given in such a way that the values, the first digit of which is 3 to 9, should be
given by 4 significant figures and those with first digits being 1 or 2 by 5 significant figures. In
