Overview

EN ISO 4254-1:2015/A1:2021 is Amendment 1 to the European adoption of ISO 4254-1 (agricultural machinery - safety - Part 1: General requirements). Approved by CEN in 2021, this amendment updates and clarifies general safety requirements for agricultural machinery access, controls, guarding and information. It also revises normative references and the informative Annex ZA that links the standard to the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). The amendment was intended to support market surveillance and to align EN application with ISO changes.

Key topics and technical requirements

This amendment introduces targeted changes and clarifications rather than a full rewrite. Key technical topics include:

  • Performance levels (PL / AgPL): Adds a bullet and note recognizing machine‑specific performance levels; machine‑specific standards may specify required PL or AgPL.
  • Updated normative references: ISO 3600, ISO 13849-1 and ISO 13850 references updated to their 2015 editions; ISO 9533:2010 added (audible travel alarms).
  • Access and boarding means:
    • First step height limited to max 550 mm; vertical distance between steps equal within ±20 mm.
    • Steps must be slip‑resistant, have lateral stops, and be designed to minimise mud/snow build‑up; flexible connection between first and second steps allowed.
    • New dimensional table for ladders and steps (step depth, tread, clearances, widths).
  • Walkways and standing places:
    • Minimum standing width 300 mm; separate surfaces may be used (each ≥150 mm, same height ±50 mm).
    • Walkways minimum width 300 mm, allowed to reduce to 250 mm briefly to accommodate handrails or components.
  • Emergency stop: ISO 13850 cited as an undated reference; note added on wireless remote control devices - machine‑specific standards may specify related emergency‑stop requirements.
  • Annex ZA: Revised to clarify the relationship between this European Standard and the Essential Requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC (presumption of conformity conditions).

Applications and who uses it

This amendment is important for:

  • Agricultural machinery designers and manufacturers - to design compliant access, guarding, controls and maintenance features.
  • Safety and compliance engineers - to apply updated normative references (ISO 13849-1, ISO 13850) and PL/AgPL guidance.
  • Conformity assessors and notified bodies - for evaluating presumption of conformity with EU Machinery Directive when the standard is cited in the Official Journal.
  • Market surveillance authorities - Annex ZA revisions help enforcement and harmonisation across CEN members.
  • Operators and fleet managers - indirectly benefit from clarified access and emergency‑stop requirements improving operational safety.

Related standards

  • ISO 4254 series (other parts covering specific machines)
  • ISO 13849-1 (safety-related parts of control systems)
  • ISO 13850 (emergency stop)
  • ISO 3600 (tyre terminology/definitions updated)
  • ISO 9533 (audible travel alarms)

This amendment preserves the EN ISO 4254-1:2015 text (approved without modification) while updating targeted clauses to reflect contemporary safety and compliance practice for agricultural machinery.
