Non-alloy steel wire rod for conversion to wire - Part 1: General requirements (ISO 16120-1:2011)

This European Standard is applicable to rod of non-alloy steel intendedfor wire drawing and/or cold rolling. The cross-section of the rod may beround, square, rectangular, hexagonal, half-round or another shape and as ageneral rule of nominal size 5 mm or above the surface is smooth.It is not applicable to following products for which standards exist orare under study such as:
-   steel rod intended for heat treatment
-   rod of free-cutting steels
-   steel rod for cold heading and cold extrusion
-   steel rod intended for the production of electrodes and products forwelding
-   steel rod for welded fabric for reinforcement for concrete
-   steel rod for wire for high fatigue strength mechanical springs, suchas valve springs.
In addition to the requirements of this standards the general technicaldelivery requirements specified in EN 10021 apply.

Walzdraht aus unlegiertem Stahl zum Ziehen - Teil 1: Allgemeine Anforderungen (ISO 16120-1:2011)

Die ISO 16120 gilt für Walzdraht aus unlegiertem Stahl zum Ziehen und/oder Kaltwalzen. Der
Querschnitt des Walzdrahtes ist rund, oval, vierkant, rechteckig, sechseckig, achteckig, halbrund oder von
anderer Form, und sein Nennmaß beträgt im allgemeinen mindestens 5 mm; seine Oberfläche ist glatt.
1.2 Dieser Teil der ISO 16120 stellt allgemeine Anforderungen dar und gilt nicht für die folgenden
Erzeugnisse, für die spezielle Normen bestehen oder in Vorbereitung sind:
Für eine Wärmebehandlung bestimmter Walzdraht aus Stahl;
⎯ Walzdraht aus Automatenstählen;
⎯ Walzdraht zum Kaltstauch- und Kaltfließpressen;
⎯ Walzdraht zur Herstellung von Elektroden und Schweißzusätzen;
⎯ Walzdraht für geschweißte Matten und zur Betonbewehrung;
⎯ Walzdraht für Wälzlager (siehe ISO 683-17);
⎯ Walzdraht für die Herstellung von Draht für Federn mit hoher Dauerschwingfestigkeit, wie Ventilfedern.
1.3 Zusätzlich zu den Anforderungen nach diesem Teil der ISO 16120 gelten die in ISO 404 festgelegten
allgemeinen technischen Lieferbedingungen.

L'ISO 16120:2011 est applicable au fil-machine en acier non allié destiné au tréfilage et/ou au laminage à froid. La section droite du fil-machine peut être circulaire, ovale, carrée, rectangulaire, hexagonale, octogonale, demi-ronde ou autre, et en règle générale, de dimension nominale supérieure ou égale à 5 mm, et avec une surface lisse.
L'ISO 16120-1:2011 couvre les exigences générales et n'est pas applicable aux produits suivants, pour lesquels il existe des normes spécifiques ou des études en cours:
le fil-machine en acier destiné aux traitements thermiques;
le fil-machine en acier pour décolletage;
le fil-machine en acier pour frappe et extrusion à froid;
le fil-machine en acier destiné à la fabrication d'électrodes et de produits pour soudage;
le fil-machine en acier pour treillis soudés pour béton armé;
le fil-machine en acier pour les roulements à billes et à rouleaux (voir l'ISO 683‑17);
le fil-machine en acier pour fil à ressort à résistance élevée à la fatigue tels que les ressorts de soupapes.
En plus des exigences de l'ISO 16120-1:2011, les exigences techniques générales de livraison de l'ISO 404 s'appliquent.

ISO 16120 velja za valjano žico iz nelegiranega jekla, ki se uporablja za vlečenje in/ali hladno valjanje žic. Prečni prerez je lahko krožen, ovalen, kvadraten, pravokoten, šestkoten, osmerokoten, polkrožen ali druge oblike, v splošnem z nazivno dimenzijo vsaj 5 mm in z gladko površino. Ta del ISO 16120 zajema splošne zahteve in ne velja za izdelke, za katere standardi obstajajo ali se pripravljajo, na primer za: - jekleno valjano žico za toplotno obdelavo; - jekleno valjano žico za prosto rezanje; - jekleno valjano žico za hladno preoblikovanje in hladno ekstruzijo; - jekleno valjano žico za proizvodnjo elektrod in izdelkov za varjenje; - jekleno valjano žico za varjeno blago za ojačitev betona; - jekleno valjano žico za kroglične in kotalne ležaje (glej ISO 683-17); - jekleno valjano žico za žice za mehanske vzmeti z visoko dinamično trdnostjo, kot so ventilske vzmeti. Poleg zahtev v tem delu ISO 16120 veljajo tudi splošne tehnične zahteve za dostavo, opredeljene v ISO 404.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies

1 Scope
1.1 ISO 16120 is applicable to wire rod of non-alloy steel intended for wire drawing and/or cold rolling. The
cross-section can be circular, oval, square, rectangular, hexagonal, octagonal, half-round or another shape,
generally with at least 5 mm nominal dimension, and with a smooth surface.
1.2 This part of ISO 16120 covers general requirements and is not applicable to products for which
standards exist or are in development, for example:
⎯ steel wire rod intended for heat treatment;
⎯ free-cutting steel wire rod;
⎯ steel wire rod for cold heading and cold extrusion;
⎯ steel wire rod intended for the production of electrodes and products for welding;
⎯ steel wire rod for welded fabric for reinforcement for concrete;
⎯ steel wire rod for ball and roller bearings (see ISO 683-17);
⎯ steel wire rod for wire for high fatigue strength mechanical springs, such as valve springs.
1.3 In addition to the requirements of this part of ISO 16120, the general technical delivery requirements

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 377, ISO 404, ISO 4885,
ISO 4948-1, ISO 4948-2 and ISO 6929 and the following apply.

rod
hot-rolled finished product hot-wound into irregular coils
NOTE Rod used for wire-drawing purposes in coil form is generally termed wire rod.

heat analysis
chemical analysis representative of the heat, by a method determined at the steelmaker's discretion

4 Classification
The classification of the steel grades covered by this part of ISO 16120 is indicated in ISO 16120-2,
ISO 16120-3 and ISO 16120-4 for the corresponding steel grades.

5 Ordering information to be supplied by the purchaser
The following information shall be supplied by the purchaser at the time of enquiry and order, to enable the
supplier to comply satisfactorily with the requirements of ISO 16120:
a) quantity to be delivered;
b) cross-section and product type (round wire rod, square wire rod, hexagonal wire rod, etc.);
c) nominal dimensions of the wire rod and tolerance class in accordance with ISO 16124 (if another
tolerance class such as T1 is required);
d) reference to the relevant part of ISO 16120, i.e. ISO 16120-2;
e) steel grade, including any variations, and/or the addition of other elements, as permitted in ISO 16120-2
and ISO 16120-4; for steels according to ISO 16120-2 and ISO 16120-4, wire rod can also be ordered by
the mean tensile strength; see Clause 3 and 4.6 of ISO 16120-2:2011 and Clause 3 and 4.8 of
ISO 16120-4:2011;
f) the type of inspection and inspection document in accordance with ISO 10474 (or in accordance with
other regional standards, e.g. EN 10204, see the Bibliography);
g) surface condition (where different from the as-rolled condition);
h) dimensions and mass of coils;
i) where applicable, indication of the type of descaling (chemical cleaning or mechanical);
j) where applicable, the amount of microalloying elements (see ISO 16120-2 and ISO 16120-4);
k) where applicable, class B for the depth of decarburization (see ISO 16120-4); if nothing is mentioned in
the order, class A will be delivered;
l) where applicable, the microstructure (see ISO 16120-4:2011, 4.11);
m) where applicable, suitability for galvanizing;
n) where applicable, suitability for direct drawing;
o) where applicable, the quality system (see 7.2);
p) where applicable, the method of binding and labelling.
Items g) to p) are options. If the purchaser does not indicate a wish to implement any of these options, the
supplier shall supply the product in accordance with the basic specifications of Items a) to f).
The following are two ordering examples.
EXAMPLE 1 For grades ordered according to chemical composition, 100 tonnes of round wire rod, nominal diameter
of 12 mm with dimensional tolerances according to ISO 16124, class T1, steel grades ISO 16120-2 – C52D in the as-
rolled condition with an inspection document 3.1.B according to ISO 10474

EXAMPLE 2 For grades ordered according to tensile strength, 200 tonnes of round wire rod, nominal diameter of

NOTE ## means “to be left blank” since the carbon content is at the discretion of the supplying mill, and the supplying
mill indicates the exact number of ## based on the grade designation until shipment. See Table 1 of ISO 16120-2:2011
and ISO 16120-4:2011, respectively, for the grade designation.
6 Production process
At the request of the purchaser at the time of enquiry and ordering, the steel making and manufacturing
process shall be made known to the purchaser. Those processes that are specifically agreed upon shall not
be changed without the prior agreement of the purchaser.
7 Requirements
7.1 General
Suppliers are responsible, using the means they think fit, for inspecting their product in accordance with
various quality criteria specified. In view of the practical difficulties in inspecting a coil of wire rod along its
entire length, it cannot be proved that no value greater than the specified limits is to be found in the coil as a
whole. Statistical evaluation of performances applicable to all coils may be agreed between the purchaser and
the manufacturer at the time of ordering.
7.2 Quality system
If agreed between the supplier and purchaser at the time of enquiry and order, the wire rod supplied shall be
produced under a mutually acceptable quality system.
7.3 Method of delivery
Wire rod shall be delivered by heat or part of a heat. Unless otherwise specified, the number of heats per
delivery should be minimized as far as possible.
7.4 Delivery condition
Wire rod shall be supplied in the as-rolled state, in coils of one continuous length with non-aligned turns, but
capable of being unwound in a regular manner during subsequent processing.
The coils shall be cut back at both ends to provide a product of uniform shape and properties.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for
voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

International Standard ISO 16120-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 17, Steel, Subcommittee
SC 17, Steel wire rod and wire products.
This first edition of ISO 16120-1, together with parts 2, 3 and 4 cancels and replaces ISO 8457-2:1989 which
has been technically revised and augmented.
ISO 16120 consists of the following parts, under the general title Non-alloy steel wire rods for conversion to
wire:
- Part 1:  General requirements
- Part 2:  Specific requirements for general purpose wire rod
- Part 3  Specific requirements for rimmed and rimmed substitute low carbon steel wire rod
- Part 4  Specific requirements for wire rod for special applications

General requirements
1   Scope
1.1 ISO 16120 is applicable to wire rod of non-alloy steel intended for wire drawing and/or cold rolling. The
cross-section may be circular, oval, square, rectangular, hexagonal, octagonal, half-round or other shape and
generally with at least 5 mm nominal dimension, and a smooth surface.
1.2 It is not applicable to products for which standards exist or are under study, e.g.:
- steel wire rod intended for heat treatment;
- free-cutting steel wire rod ;
- steel wire rod for cold heading and cold extrusion;
- steel wire rod intended for the production of electrodes and products for welding;
- steel wire rod for welded fabric for reinforcement for concrete ;
- steel wire rod for ball and roller bearings (see ISO 683-17);
- steel wire rod for wire for high fatigue strength mechanical springs, such as valve springs.
1.3 In addition to the requirements of this part of ISO 16120 the general technical delivery requirements
specified in ISO 404 apply.

3   Terms and definitions
For the purpose of each part of ISO16120, the definitions given in ISO 377, ISO 404, ISO 4885, ISO 4948-1,
ISO 4948-2 and ISO 6929 and the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
rod
hot-rolled finished product hot wound into irregular coils
Rod used for wire-drawing purposes in coil form is generally termed wire rod.
3.2
heat analysis
chemical analysis representative of the heat, by a method determined at the steelmaker’s discretion.
3.3
product analysis
chemical analysis carried out on a sample of the product taken after the final hot rolling operation.
3.4
resolvable Pearlite
is defined as pearlite where the ferrite and iron carbide lamellae can be clearly observed under optical
microscopy using the conditions identified in this annex.

4   Classification
The classification of the steel grades covered by this part of ISO 16120 are indicated in ISO 16120-2, ISO
16120-3 and ISO 16120-4 for the corresponding steel grades.

5   Ordering information to be supplied by the purchaser
The following information shall be supplied by the purchaser at the time of enquiry and order, to enable the
supplier to comply satisfactorily with the requirements of ISO 16120:
a) quantity to be delivered;
b) cross-section and product type (round wire rod, square wire rod, hexagonal wire rod etc.);
c) reference to the dimensional standard ISO 16124;
d) nominal dimensions of the wire rod and tolerance class according to ISO 16124 (if another tolerance class
as T1 is required);
e) reference to the relevant part of ISO 16120, i.e. ISO 16120-2;
f) steel grade, including any variations, and/or the addition of other elements, as permitted in ISO 16120-2 and
ISO 16120-4. For steels according to ISO 16120-2 and ISO 16120-4, wire rod can also be ordered by the
mean tensile strength. See clause 3 and 4.6 of ISO 16120-2 and clause 3 and 4.8 of ISO 16120-4;
g) the type of inspection and inspection document in accordance with ISO 10474 (or in accordance with other
regional standards: e.g.: EN 10204, see bibliography).;
h) surface condition (where different from the as-rolled condition);
i) dimensions and mass of coils;
j) where applicable, indication of the type of descaling (chemical cleaning or mechanical);
k) where applicable the amount of microalloying elements (see ISO16120-2 and ISO 16120-4);
l) where applicable, the class B for the depth of decarburization (see ISO 16120-4), if nothing is mentioned in
the order, class A will be delivered:
m) where applicable, the microstructure ( See ISO 16120-4, clause 4.11);
n) where applicable, if the steel grade shall be suitable for galvanizing;
o) where applicable, suitable for direct drawing;
p) where applicable, the quality system (see 7.2);
q) where applicable, the method of binding and labelling.
Points h) to q) are options. If the purchaser does not indicate a wish to implement any of these options, the
supplier shall supply in accordance with the basic specifications of points a) to g).
Two ordering examples
Example for grades ordered to chemical composition 100 tonnes of round wire rod, nominal diameter of 12 mm with
dimensional tolerances according to ISO 16124 class T1, steel grades ISO 16120-2 – C52D in the as-rolled condition with
an inspection document 3.1.B according to ISO 10474:

Example for grades ordered to tensile strength 200 t of round wire rod, nominal diameter of 5.5 mm with dimensional
tolerances according to ISO 16124 class T1, steel grades ISO 16120-4 – C##D2 with tensile strength 1020 MPa in the as
rolled condition with an inspection document 3.1.B according to ISO 10474:

NOTE ## means to be left blank since carbon content is at the discretion of the supplying mill, and supplying mill
informs the exact number of ## based on the grade designation until shipment. See Table 1 of ISO 16120-2 and 16120-4
respectively as for the grade designation.
6 Production process
At the request of the purchaser at the time of enquiry and ordering, the steel making and manufacturing
process shall be made known to the purchaser. Those processes that are specifically agreed shall not be
changed without prior agreement of the purchaser.
7  Requirements
7.1 General
Suppliers are responsible, using the means they think fit, for inspecting their product in accordance with
various quality criteria specified. In view of the practical difficulties in inspecting a coil of wire rod along its
entire length, it cannot be proved that no value greater than the specified limits is to be found in the coil as a
whole. Statistical evaluation of performances applicable to all coils may be agreed between the purchaser and
the manufacturer at the time of ordering.
7.2 Quality system
If agreed between supplier and purchaser at the time of enquiry and order, the wire rod supplied shall be
produced under a mutually acceptable quality system.
7.3 Method of delivery
The products shall be delivered by heat or part of a heat. Unless otherwise specified the number of heats per
delivery should be minimized as far as possible.
7.4 Delivery condition
Wire rod shall be supplied in the as-rolled state, in coils of one continuous length with non-aligned turns, but
capable of being unwound in a regular manner during subsequent processing.
The coils shall be cut back at both ends to provide a product of uniform shape and properties.
8 Dimensions, mass and tolerances
The dimensions, mass and tolerances of the products shall be in accordance with the requirements of ISO
16124

9 Inspection
9.1 Inspection and inspection documents
Inspection and inspection documents shall be in accordance with ISO 404 and ISO 10474.
9.2 Extension of inspection
If the order is accompanied by a request for an inspection certificate or an inspection report, the inspection
shall be carried out in accordance with Table 1. In the case that the order requires an inspection document
