Overview
EN 13285:2018 - Unbound mixtures: Specifications (CEN) defines requirements for unbound granular mixtures used in the construction and maintenance of roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. It covers mixtures of natural, manufactured and recycled aggregates with an upper sieve size (D) from 5.6 mm to 90 mm and a lower sieve size d = 0 at delivery. The standard excludes mixtures with D > 90 mm, use of aggregates as soil, and does not set limits for on-site water content or installed layer density (these are construction control parameters).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Mixture designation (0/D): Lists standard mixture size codes (e.g., 0/5.6, 0/11.2, 0/63, 0/90). Other 0/D sizes may follow ISO 565/R20 series.
- Aggregate requirements: Cross-references EN 13242 for particle shape, crushed/rounded fractions, fines quality, particle density, water absorption, wear resistance, chemical limits and recycled-aggregate classifications.
- Fines content (0.063 mm): Defines categories (upper fines UF and lower fines LF) with maximum/minimum limits and guidance on choosing compatible UF/LF so the difference is ≥ 3%.
- Oversize control: Categories for percentage passing the upper sieve and related 1.4·D / 2·D sieves to limit oversize particles.
- Grading requirements: Multiple grading categories (normal-graded, open-graded, other types) with overall ranges and Manufacturer’s Declared Value (MDV) grading ranges. Manufacturers can declare MDVs and must demonstrate conformity over production periods.
- Laboratory reference density and water content: Test methods are referenced (EN 13286 series: Proctor, vibrocompression, vibrating hammer/table).
- Assessment & Verification (AVCP): Type testing, test reports and Factory Production Control (FPC) requirements (see EN 16236).
- Marking, labelling and classification: Specifies information to be provided with deliveries.
- Informative annexes: Guidance on MDV use, mechanical behaviour assessment and national A-deviations.

The SIST EN 13285:2018 standard provides a comprehensive framework for the specifications of unbound mixtures utilized in the construction and maintenance of roads, airfields, and other trafficked areas. The standard's scope is clearly defined, encompassing unbound mixtures made from a variety of materials including natural, manufactured, and recycled aggregates. It effectively specifies the parameters for these aggregates, particularly focusing on mixtures with an upper sieve size ranging from 5.6 mm to 90 mm and defining a lower sieve size of 0 at the point of delivery. One of the key strengths of this standard is its clarity in delineating the scope and application of unbound mixtures, making it easier for professionals in the construction industry to understand and adhere to the requirements. It serves as a valuable resource for ensuring that the materials used in road and airfield construction are specified correctly, thereby enhancing the longevity and durability of these infrastructures. Moreover, the standard maintains a strong alignment with EN 13242, which outlines aggregate requirements, promoting consistency and reliability in the specifications across Europe. This cross-referencing of standards underscores the importance of using quality aggregates, which are integral to the structural integrity of any construction project involving unbound mixtures. Another notable aspect is the explicit exclusion of certain parameters such as water content and density of the installed layer from its requirements. By delineating these aspects, the standard allows for a focused and specialized approach to the specifications of unbound mixtures, while recognizing that construction practices surrounding these factors will be governed by additional regulations or standards. Overall, SIST EN 13285:2018 stands as a pertinent and robust guideline for industry professionals involved in the specification and application of unbound mixtures, ensuring that unbound mixtures meet the necessary standards for performance and safety in trafficked areas. This relevance is further underscored by its adaptability to various aggregate types, thereby supporting a sustainable approach to construction practices.
