EN 13285:2018 (E) 13 NOTE The resulting density of an installed unbound layer is typically influenced by the conditions on the construction site (Construction mode, weather, storage of the mixture, traffic,, etc). Therefor a declared value of laboratory dry density and water content may have more indicative character. 4.3.6 Other requirements When required, frost susceptibility, permeability, leaching and water retention shall be considered. Frost susceptibility of unbound mixtures can be indirectly assessed and declared in terms of fines content (4.3.2). Influence of the construction mode and exposure conditions on the in layer performance should be taken into account when specifying a requirement on upper (maximum) fines content UF. Permeability of unbound mixtures can be indirectly assessed and declared in terms of grading and fines content (4.3.2 and 4.3.4). Influence of the construction mode and exposure conditions on the in layer performance should be taken into account when specifying a requirement on Grading G and/or fines UF. NOTE 1 There is currently insufficient experience to define test methods and set specification limits for the characteristics in this clause, which can be used in all parts of Europe. The test method may be a direct frost heave, permeability or an indirect method. Guidance may be given in Provisions valid in the place of use. NOTE 2 Guidance on the assessment of the mechanical behaviour of unbound mixtures is given in Annex B. Leaching with regard to release of dangerous substances is dealt with in 4.3.7. 4.3.7 Dangerous substances National regulations on dangerous substances may require verification and declaration on release, and sometimes content, when construction products covered by this standard are placed on those markets. In the absence of European harmonized test methods, verification and declaration on release/content should be done taking into account national provisions in the place of use. Release of dangerous substances originates from the aggregates according to EN 13242 that are used in unbound mixtures. When different source materials for these aggregates are used as constituents of the unbound mixture, care shall be taken to also ensure the resulting performance of release meets the requirements. Therefor any declaration shall be done according to EN 13242. NOTE An informative database covering European and national provisions on dangerous substances is available at the Construction website on EUROPA accessed through: http://ec.europa.eu/growth/tools-databases/cp-ds_en 5 Assessment and verification of constancy of performance — AVCP 5.1 General The compliance of unbound mixtures with the requirements of this standard shall be demonstrated by: — determination of the product type; — factory production control (see 5.3) by the manufacturer, including product assessment. The manufacturer shall always retain the overall control and shall have the necessary means to take responsibility for the conformity of the product with its declared performance(s). Bulk (initial) samples of unbound mixtures shall be taken and reduced in accordance with EN 13286-1. SIST EN 13285:2018

EN 13285:2018 (E) 14 5.2 Type Testing 5.2.1 General The performance of each characteristic included in this standard shall be determined when the manufacturer intends to declare the respective performances unless the standard gives provisions for declaring them without performing tests, e.g. use of previously existing data, classified without further testing (CWFT) and conventionally accepted performance. Assessment previously performed in accordance with the provisions of this standard, may be taken into account provided that they were made to the same or a more rigorous test method, under the same AVCP system on the same product or products of similar design, construction and functionality, such that the results are applicable to the product in question. For the purposes of assessment, the manufacturer’s products may be grouped into families, where it is considered that the results for one or more characteristics from any one product within the family are representative for that same characteristic for all products within that same family. NOTE Products may be grouped in different families for different characteristics. In addition, the determination of the product type shall be performed for all characteristics included in the standard for which the manufacturer declares the performance when a) a new source of aggregates is to be used (for recycled aggregates the processing depot will suffice for the source); b) there is a major change in the nature of the raw materials or in the processing conditions that may affect the characteristics of the unbound mixture. Where aggregates are used whose characteristics have already been determined by the aggregate manufacturer, on the basis of assessment methods of other product standards (e.g. EN 13242), these characteristics need not be re-assessed. The specifications of these aggregates shall be documented. The documentation shall specifically include the identification of any components likely to emit radiation above normal background levels and/or release of dangerous substances. If the content and/or release and/or emission of any of these components shall be declared, the results of the type tests shall be declared in accordance with the provisions valid in the place of use of the unbound mixture. 5.2.2 Characteristics, testing and conformity criteria The characteristics of unbound mixtures to be assessed or tested shall be in accordance with Table 9.
