Overview

EN ISO 10893-8:2011/A1:2020 is an amendment to the international standard for non-destructive testing (NDT) of steel tubes, specifically addressing automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) of seamless and welded steel tubes for the detection of laminar imperfections (also referred to as splits, dedoublings or Dopplungen). Published as a CEN-adopted amendment in 2020, this document updates the acceptance criteria and retest procedure used in automated ultrasonic inspection.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Automated ultrasonic testing of seamless and welded steel tubes to detect laminar imperfections.
  • Primary change (Clause 8.1.2): The amendment revises the retest acceptance rule:
    • Previous wording required two consecutive retests showing all signals below the trigger/alarm level for a tube to pass.
    • The amendment changes this to one retest: if after one retest all signals are below the trigger/alarm level, the tube is deemed to have passed; otherwise it is designated as suspect.
  • Testing focus: Detection and evaluation of laminar defects using AUT systems-signal thresholds, trigger/alarm levels and interpretation rules are central to acceptance decisions.
  • Compliance: The amendment is adopted by CEN members and intended to be implemented in relevant national standards without alteration.

Practical applications

  • Quality control in tube mills producing seamless and welded steel tubes.
  • Routine or final inspection for pressure tubing, line pipe, structural tube and other industrial tube products where laminar imperfections affect integrity.
  • Integration into factory production control (FPC), acceptance testing, and third‑party inspection regimes.
  • Use in automated inspection lines where rapid decision-making based on signal thresholds and retest rules is required.

Who uses this standard

  • NDT technicians and engineers performing ultrasonic inspections.
  • Quality managers and production engineers in steel tube manufacturing.
  • Inspection and certification bodies responsible for acceptance testing or supplier qualification.
  • Designers and procurement specialists who reference NDT acceptance criteria in specifications and contracts.

Related standards

  • Part of the broader ISO 10893 series on NDT of steel tubes and relevant to other standards covering ultrasonic techniques, NDT procedures and steel tube product specifications.
