Overview

EN 15386:2007 - Packaging - Flexible laminate and plastic tubes - Test method to determine the print adhesion - is a CEN standard that defines a standardized method to assess the adhesion of printing inks on flexible laminate and plastic tubes. The method is applicable to tubes used for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, hygiene, food and other household products and supports quality control, supplier acceptance and product specification.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope: Applies to printed flexible laminate and plastic tubes used for consumer and regulated products.
  • Principle: Uses an adhesive tape test to judge how well a printing ink film adheres to the tube surface by rapidly removing a pressure-sensitive tape and examining the separated surfaces.
  • Adhesive tape specification: Tape with a tear-proof plastic backing and pressure-sensitive adhesive having an adhesive force of 5–7 N/25 mm (verified against a glass testing surface per Annex A).
  • Procedure (summary):
    • Place sample on flat surface and apply the adhesive tape, ensuring full contact without air bubbles.
    • Wait about 10–30 seconds, then tear off tape manually in one go at an angle of approximately 150°.
    • Inspect the divided surfaces and evaluate according to the standard’s pass/fail criteria:
      • Pass: No damage to print or printing material (pure adhesion fracture).
      • Fail: Damage to print or printing material (not adhesive tape resistant).
    • Severity of failure modes should be agreed between customer and supplier.
  • Test report requirements: Reference to the standard, batch identification, number tested, number of defects, printing date, test results and conditions, tester name, date and place.
  • Annex A - Peel adhesion (180°) at 300 mm/min:
    • Optional quantitative method using a tensile tester (180° peel, 300 mm/min jaw separation).
    • Test strips: 25 mm wide, minimum length 175 mm; conditioning at 23 °C ±2 °C, 50 % RH ±5 % for at least 4 hours.
    • Measurements at 20 minutes and 24 hours after application (ultimate adhesion).
    • Results reported in N/25 mm and failure modes coded (CP, PS, CF, AT, PT).

Applications and Users

  • Manufacturers and converters of laminate and plastic tubes (quality control, R&D).
  • Brand owners in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and hygiene sectors enforcing print durability specifications.
  • Inspection and testing laboratories performing acceptance tests or failure investigations.
  • Procurement teams and suppliers negotiating acceptance criteria for printed tubes.

Peel adhesion (180 °) at 300 mm/min.6

The printing ink film is tested by rapidly tearing-off a previously applied adhesive tape. After the tape has been torn off, the divided surfaces are judged by pre-established criteria. 3 Apparatus An adhesive tape of commercial quality equipped with an upper surface made of tear-proof plastic and a pressure sensitive adhesive coating, of which the adhesive power is: minimum 5 N/25 mm and maximum 7 N/25 mm, tested according to Annex A against a glass testing surface. 4 Procedure
Place the printed sample on an even surface. Apply the adhesive tape on the sample and press it on manually across the length of the decoration.
It is important that there is full contact with the surface over the whole area and that no air bubbles remain between adhesive tape and sample surface. Approximately 10 s to 30 s after pressing-on, manually tear off the free end of the adhesive tape in one go from the surface at an angle of about 150 °.
Examine the divided surfaces (printing surface and reverse sid
