Overview
SIST EN ISO 6941:2026, entitled Textile fabrics - Burning behaviour - Measurement of flame spread properties of vertically oriented specimens, establishes a standardized method for determining how flames spread across vertically oriented textile fabrics when subjected to a controlled ignition source. This standard is applicable to both single and multi-component textile products, including coated, quilted, multilayered, and similar combinations, and is crucial for assessing the burning behaviour and fire performance of various textiles used across the industry.
The adoption of this international standard, developed by ISO/TC 38 and implemented by SIST, ensures the uniform measurement of flame spread times, enhancing safety, regulatory compliance, and product consistency for textile manufacturers and downstream users.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose
- Applies to single or multi-component textile fabrics, regardless of construction or finish
- Determines the flame spread time when a fabric is exposed to a small, defined flame while mounted vertically
- Addresses both surface and edge ignition methods
- Test Methodology
- Utilizes a standardized burner and specimen holder for controlled testing
- Involves attaching marker threads at specific locations on the specimen to measure flame progression over time
- Details test conditions, specimen size, and environmental requirements for accurate and repeatable results
- Reporting and Reproducibility
- Emphasizes the importance of documenting fabric details, test conditions, and any deviations or unusual observations in the test report
- Acknowledges variability in flame spread rates, especially for materials that sag or react differently when exposed to a flame
- Safety and Precautions
- Highlights safety considerations for operators and recommends proper equipment design to withstand corrosive combustion products
- Advises adequate ventilation to prevent exposure to smoke and toxic gases during testing
Applications
SIST EN ISO 6941:2026 is widely relevant for industries and organizations concerned with the fire safety of textile products, providing practical benefits and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements:
- Textile and Apparel Manufacturing:
- Used to assess the fire performance of clothing, upholstery, draperies, bedding, and other consumer or commercial textile products
- Supports product development and quality assurance for flame-retardant or fire-resistant textiles
- Industrial and Technical Textiles:
- Applied to materials used in protective clothing, automotive interiors, aircraft and public transport upholstery, and construction
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Assists manufacturers and suppliers in demonstrating conformity with national and international fire safety standards for materials and finished goods
- Research and Product Certification:
- Used in laboratories and certification bodies to validate claims related to fire safety and burning behaviour
By following the testing protocol set in SIST EN ISO 6941:2026, organizations can reliably compare textile materials' flame spread properties, enhance safety, and confidently market compliant products in global markets.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the

revised.
The main changes are as follows:

ISO 6941:2026(en)
Introduction
This method is one of two closely related methods of test for the inflammability of textile. This method
[1]
determines the “flame spread time” as defined in ISO 4880 . The other method observes and measures
[2]
“ease of ignition” (seeISO 6940 ).
The method given in this document assesses the properties of textile fabrics in response to flame contact
under controlled conditions. There is a possibility that results do not apply the situations where there is
restricted air supply or exposure to large sources of intense heat.
The influence of seams on the behaviour of textile fabrics can be determined by this method, the seam being
positioned within the test specimen so as to be subjected to the test flame. Whenever practicable, trimmings
are tested as part of the textile fabric assembly on which they are or will be used.
