Stationary training equipment - Part 5: Stationary exercise bicycles and upper body crank training equipment, additional specific safety requirements and test methods

This part of EN 957 specifies safety requirements for stationary exercise bicycles and upper body crank training equipment in addition to the general safety requirements of EN 957 1.
This part of EN 957 is applicable to stationary training equipment type stationary exercise bicycles and upper body crank training equipment (type 5) as defined in clause 3 within the classes S, H, I and A, B, C.
Any attachment provided with the stationary exercise bicycles and upper body crank training equipment for the performance of additional exercises are subject to the requirements of EN 957 1.
This part of EN 957 is not applicable to roller stands as they cannot be made safe in a reasonable way.

Dieser Teil der EN 957 legt sicherheitstechnische Anforderungen für stationäre Trainingsfahrräder und Kurbel-
Trainingsgeräte für den Oberkörper zusätzlich zu den allgemeinen sicherheitstechnischen Anforderungen
nach EN 957-1 fest.
Dieser Teil der EN 957 gilt für stationäre Trainingsgeräte vom Typ stationäre Trainingsfahrräder und Kurbel-
Trainingsgeräte für den Oberkörper (Typ 5), wie in Abschnitt 3 definiert, in den Klassen S, H, I und A, B, C
nach EN 957-1.
Für alle Zusatzgeräte, die zusammen mit stationären Trainingsfahrrädern und Kurbel-Trainingsgeräten für den
Oberkörper zur Durchführung von zusätzlichen Übungen geliefert werden, gelten die Anforderungen nach
EN 957-1.
Dieser Teil der EN 957 gilt nicht für Rollenständer, da diese nicht in angemessener Weise gesichert werden
können.

Foreword
This document (EN 957-5:2009) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 136 “Sports-
playground and other recreational equipment”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by August 2009, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at
the latest by August 2009.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. CEN [and/or CENELEC] shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

It amends and supplements EN 957-1. The requirements of this specific standard take priority over those in
the general standard.

1 Scope
This part of EN 957 specifies safety requirements for stationary exercise bicycles and upper body crank
training equipment in addition to the general safety requirements of EN 957-1.
This part of EN 957 is applicable to stationary training equipment type stationary exercise bicycles and upper

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document the terms and definitions given in EN 957-1 and the following apply.

pedal crank training equipment
stationary apparatus on which work is carried out by turning a crank mechanism either by using the lower
body or the upper body or both
NOTE Hereafter referred to as training equipment.

gearing mechanism which is designed to disengage the flywheel from the pedal mechanism in one direction

5 Safety requirements
5.1 General
Depending on the design of the piece of training equipment the following requirements shall apply as
appropriate.
Unless stated otherwise a tolerance of ± 5 % applies.
5.2 External construction
5.2.1 Transmission elements and rotating parts
When tested in accordance with 6.3.1, the finger probe shall not become entrapped.
In addition, if the crank extends beyond the protective cover at any point during rotation, then the distance
between the crank and the protective cover shall not be less than 10 mm. Test in accordance with 6.1.1.
Transmission elements, fans and flywheels shall be protected, so that, when tested according to 6.3.2, the
test finger cannot be trapped or touch moving parts which have no smooth surface.
5.2.2 Temperature rise
When tested in accordance with 6.2, accessible parts of the equipment shall not have a temperature greater
than 65 °C.
5.3 Intrinsic loading
For classes S, H and I the training equipment shall be tested against permanent deformation with 2 times the
maximum body mass ± 5 % specified by the manufacturer or at least 2 000 N whichever is greater. After the
test in accordance with 6.4, the permanent deformation shall be not more than 3 %.
For class H the training equipment shall not break when tested with a load of 2,5 times the maximum body
mass ± 5 % specified by the manufacturer or at least 2 500 N whichever is greater. For classes S and I the
training equipment shall not break when tested with a load of 4 times the maximum body mass specified by
the manufacturer or at least 4 000 N whichever is greater.
During the test in accordance with 6.4 the training equipment shall not tip over.
The clamped seat pillar shall not slip by more than 5 mm into the seat tube during the test.
5.4 Seat pillar — Seat
5.4.1 Insertion depth
The seat pillar shall have a permanent mark indicating the minimum insertion depth of at least 1,5 times the
cross section reference dimension (e. g. diameter or longest diagonal use of a rectangular tube) into the seat
tube. The mark is not required if the minimum insertion depth is given by the design.
Test in accordance with 6.1.1 and 6.1.2.
5.4.2 Seat adjustment
Except for classes HB and HC the height adjustment system shall work without a tool. If the clamping
mechanism of the horizontal adjustment fails, the seat shall remain in a safe usable position.

Test in accordance with 6.1.4.
5.4.3 Seat tilting
The seat shall be fixed to the seat pillar and, this in turn, in the seat tube, so that the seat does not tilt more
than 2° from its original position. The measurement of 2° is between the seat and the seat tube.
Test in accordance with 6.5.
5.5 Handlebar
5.5.1 Handlebar stem
The handlebar stem shall be adjustable or different grip positions shall be provided.
If the vertical height is adjustable, the handlebar stem shall have a permanent mark indicating the minimum
insertion depth of at least 1,5 times the cross section reference dimension (e. g. diameter or the longest
diagonal of a rectangular tube). The mark is not required if the minimum insertion depth is given by the design.
Test in accordance with 6.6.
5.5.2 Handlebars
Adjust the front handlebar to their most onerous position. Test the handlebar with a load of 0,3 times the
maximum body mass ± 5 % specified by the manufacturer or (300 ± 15) N whichever is greater for class H.
For classes S and I apply 0,3 times the maximum body mass ± 5 % specified by the manufacturer or
(450 ± 15) N whichever is greater.
After removal of the test load, the handlebar shall function according to the manufacturer's instructions, and
shall remain in its original position within 5° for adjustable handlebars and without permanent deformation of
the handlebar of more than 2° for fixed systems.
For recumbent bikes test the seat handlebars with a vertical load of 2,5 times the maximum body mass ± 5 %
specified by the manufacturer or at least 2 500 N whichever is greater for class H against breakage. For
classes S and I apply 2 times the maximum body mass specified by the manufacturer or at least 2 000 N
whichever is greater against permanent deformation of more than 2° for non adjustable and 5° for adjustable
seat handlebars and 4 times against breakage.
Test in accordance with 6.6.
5.6 Pedals
Pedals shall be in accordance with ISO 4210.
5.7 Stability
When tested in accordance with 6.8, the training equipment shall not fall over.

5.8 Additional requirements for recumbent training equipment, upper body and combined
machines
5.8.1 Combined machines
If the machine has upper and lower body rotational crank systems, there shall be a mechanism to disengage
either the upper or lower crank when only one crank is in use.
Inadvertent entrapment of the hands and the fingers shall be prevented.
Test in accordance with 6.1.4.
5.8.2 Seat back rest
The seat back rest shall withstand to a static force of:
 1 x the maximum body mass ± 5 % specified by the manufacturer or at least 1 000 N whichever is greater
for class H;
 1,5 x the maximum body mass ± 5 % specified by the manufacturer or at least 1 500 N whichever is
reater for classes S and I.
After releasing the force, no breakage or permanent deformation d (see Figure 4) of more than 10 % of
distance l (see Figure 4) measured at the height of the force application point horizontally at the back side of
the seat shall occur. After the test the seat adjustments shall work properly.
Test in accordance with 6.7.
5.9 Additional classified requirements
For adjustable systems, classes A, B and C shall fulfil the requirements in accordance with Table 1. For non
adjustable systems, classes A, B and C shall fulfil the requirements in accordance with Table 2.
