Overview
EN 4263:2013 is a CEN aerospace standard that specifies requirements for the heat resisting alloy FE-PA4901 (X12CrNiCoMoW21-20) in the as‑forged condition for forging stock with a or D ≤ 200 mm. The standard applies to high‑strength, heat‑resisting ferrous alloy forgings intended for aerospace applications, and defines mechanical property limits, delivery condition, inspection and qualification rules for this alloy grade.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material designation: FE-PA4901 (X12CrNiCoMoW21-20); air melted.
- Form / size: Forging stock, as forged; maximum section a or D ≤ 200 mm.
- Strength range: Tensile strength Rm between 690 MPa and 960 MPa.
- Proof stress: Rp0,2 ≥ 345 MPa.
- Ductility: Elongation A ≥ 30%; elongation at rupture after ageing ≥ 8%.
- Hardness: 192 ≤ HB ≤ 241.
- High‑temperature (creep/ageing) requirement: After exposure at 730 °C for ≥100 h, rupture stress σR = 165 MPa (as specified) with corresponding elongation requirement.
- Delivery condition code: U (as forged). Heat treatment/solution treatment and any post‑forge operations are referenced to the manufacturing schedule and to EN 2860‑2.
- Inspection & defects: External/internal defect classification, macrostructure and dimensional/marking inspections are addressed by reference to EN 2860‑2 and EN 2043; product qualification programs are agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
- Chemical composition (summary ranges): C 0.08–0.16 %, Si ≤1.00 %, Mn ≤2.00 %, P ≤0.040 %, S ≤0.030 %, Co ~18.5–22.5 %, Cr ~20.0–22.5 %, Mo ~2.5–3.5 %, Nb ~0.75–1.25 %, Ni ~19.0–21.0 %, N ≤0.20 %, W ~2.0–3.0 % (base Fe).
(For full technical tables and exact compositional limits, consult the standard document.)
Practical applications and who uses this standard
- Used by aerospace materials engineers, forging manufacturers, quality/inspection teams, and procurement specialists involved in specifying and producing high‑temperature ferrous forgings.
- Applicable where robust mechanical strength and heat resistance are required in relatively small forgings (a or D ≤ 200 mm) for aerospace components exposed to elevated temperatures.
- Helps ensure consistent mechanical properties (Rm, Rp0.2, hardness, elongation), traceability and agreed inspection/qualification between suppliers and OEMs.
