Overview

EN ISO 12707:2016 - "Non-destructive testing - Magnetic particle testing - Vocabulary" is a CEN-adopted ISO vocabulary standard that defines the general terms specifically associated with magnetic particle testing (MPI). Published in 2016 and endorsed as EN ISO 12707:2016, it harmonizes terminology used across NDT practice, equipment specification, reporting and training to reduce ambiguity in international and cross‑industry communication.

Key Topics

The standard provides concise, standardized definitions for MPI-related terms, including but not limited to:

  • Magnetization techniques: adjacent conductor technique, coil technique, circular magnetization, current flow technique, induced current flow technique, flexible and rigid coil techniques, threaded conductor technique, magnetic flow technique.
  • Equipment and components: magnetizing coil, portable electromagnet (yoke), magnetic bench, current generator, contact pad, prods, central/ threaded conductor.
  • Detection media and properties: magnetic particle, magnetic ink, detection medium, carrier liquid, dry powder technique, fluorescent detection medium, coloured detection medium, concentrate, conditioning agent, magnetic particle content, fluorescent stability, mechanical stability.
  • Fields and measurements: tangential field, tangential field strength, residual field, ampere turns.
  • Performance and artefacts: magnetic writing, arcing strike, flux indicator, lift test, magnetic extender, contrast aid paint, continuous magnetization technique.

These definitions support consistent interpretation of MPI methods, equipment specifications, and inspection results without prescribing test procedures or acceptance criteria.

Applications and Users

EN ISO 12707:2016 is essential for organizations and professionals involved in non-destructive testing (NDT) who require consistent terminology:

  • NDT inspectors and technicians performing magnetic particle testing
  • NDT trainers and certification bodies developing course material and exams
  • Quality managers and engineers writing inspection procedures and reports
  • Manufacturers and procurement teams specifying MPI equipment and detection media
  • Laboratories, regulators and auditors harmonizing documentation across borders

Practical uses include producing clear inspection instructions, unambiguous test reports, procurement specifications, training syllabi, and technical translations.

Related Standards

  • ISO 12706 - Terminology for penetrant testing
  • ISO 12718 - Eddy current testing - Vocabulary
  • EN 1330-7:2005 - Terms used in magnetic particle testing (superseded by EN ISO 12707:2016)

Using EN ISO 12707:2016 improves clarity in MPI communication, supports regulatory and contractual compliance, and reduces misinterpretation in NDT practice.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
