SIST EN IEC 62769-2:2021 - Field Device Integration (FDI) - Part 2: FDI Client (IEC 62769-2:2021) - Effective Date
- 09-Nov-2021
Overview
EN IEC 62769-2:2023 (IEC 62769-2:2023) specifies the Field Device Integration (FDI®) - Part 2: Client. It defines the FDI Client component within the FDI architecture, describing services, models and interfaces used by client applications to access, present and interact with field devices in industrial measurement and control systems. The edition 3.0 (2023) document is the International Standard adopted by CENELEC and supersedes the 2021 edition. Note: FDI® is a registered trademark; compliance with the standard does not require using the trade name.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard focuses on the FDI Client and includes normative definitions, service models and XML schema. Major technical topics are:
Device Access Services
- Device model and node model constructs that describe device structure and properties.
- Base Property Services, Device Model Services, Locking Services, and Direct Access Services for configuration, read/write and exclusive access operations.
- Data types required for device interaction.
Hosting Services
- Requirements for hosting device-specific UI components and resources on the FDI Client, including parameter type definitions.
UIP (User Interface Plugin) and UID (User Interface Description)
- UIP services, instantiation rules, state machine and permission constraints for running user-interface components supplied by device vendors.
- UID execution model and XML schemas (Annex A) that specify UI elements, actions and data binding.
Actions and interactive device transfer
- Definitions of action sequences, interactive transfer to device and associated request/response semantics.
Normative XML schema (Annex A) that formalizes message and UI element structures for interoperability.
Applications and who uses it
EN IEC 62769-2:2023 enables consistent integration of field devices into engineering tools, control systems and asset management applications. Typical users include:
- Device manufacturers (to supply compliant UI packages and device models)
- Control system vendors and DCS/SCADA integrators (to implement FDI Clients)
- System integrators and automation engineers (for commissioning, configuration and diagnostics)
- Software developers building operator and maintenance tools
Practical uses: device configuration, diagnostics, secure read/write access, vendor-supplied graphical UIs, and standardized data exchange between devices and enterprise systems in process and factory automation.
Related standards
EN IEC 62769-2 references and is part of the FDI series (Parts 1, 3–6). It also aligns with related international standards cited in Annex ZA, including:
- IEC 62769-1 (FDI Overview) and IEC 62769-3 (FDI Server)
- IEC 61804 (EDDL / function blocks), IEC 62541 (OPC UA), and IEC 62443 (security) - referenced for interoperability and security considerations.
Keywords: FDI Client, Field Device Integration, EN IEC 62769-2:2023, IEC 62769-2, device access services, UIP, UID, industrial automation, device model, XML schema.
