Foreword IS0 (the International Organization for standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0 technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern- mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the IS0 Council. They are approved in accordance with IS0 procedures requiring at least 75 % appioval by the member bodies voting. International Standard IS0 780 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 122, Packaging. IS0 780 was first published in 1983. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition, to which the new symbol No. 5 has been added (thereby renumbering old symbols 5 to 12 as 6 to 13 respectively). INTERNATIONAL STANDARD IS0 780-1985 (E) Packaging - Pictorial marking for handling of goods O Introduction Packages are often marked with handling instructions in the language of the country of origin. While this may safeguard the consignment to some extent, it is of little value for goods consigned to, or through, countries using different languages, and of no value at all if people handling the packages are illiterate. Graphical symbols offer the only possibility of conveying the consignor’s intention and their adoption will, therefore, un- doubtedly reduce loss and damage through incorrect handling. %‘ The use of graphical symbols does not provide any guarantee of satisfactory handling; proper protective packing is therefore of primary importance. 1 Scope and field of application This International Standard specifies a set of symbols, conven- tionally used for marking of transport packages to convey handling instructions. It applies to packages containing any kind of goods, but does not include instructions specific to the handling of dangerous goods. 2 Symbols 2.1 Display of the symbols Symbols may appear on a label or should preferably be sten- cilled directly on the package”. It is recommended that the symbols be painted, printed or otherwise reproduced, as specified in this International Standard. They need not be framed by border lines. 2.2 Colour of the symbols The colour to be used for svmbols is black. If the colour of the package is such that the symbol would not show clearly, a panel of a suitable contrasting colour, preferably white, shall be provided as a background. Care shall be taken to avoid the use of colours which could lead to confusion with the labelling of dangerous goods. The use of red or orange shall be avoided unless existing regional or national regulations expressly lay down such use. 2.3 Size of the symbols For normal purposes the overall size of the symbols shall be 100. 150 or 200 mm.
