FOREWORD
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
1)
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, express as nearly as possible an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has
representation from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the
form of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that
sense.
In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
4)
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
5)
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the
subject of patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard IEC 598-2-8 has been prepared by subcommittee 34D: Luminaires,
of IEC technical committee 34: Lamps and related equipment.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1981 and amend-
ment 2, published in 1990, and constitutes a technical revision.
The text of this standard is based on the first edition, amendment 2 and the following
documents:

Part
Section 8: Handlamps
8.1 Scope
This section of part 2 of IEC 598 specifies requirements for handlamps and similar
portable luminaires which are held in the hand when used, for use with tungsten filament
and tubular fluorescent lamps on supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. It is to be read in
conjunction with those sections of part 1 to which reference is made.
rt by means such as a wing screw, clip or
Handlamps which can be fixed to a suppo
magnet, and luminaires such as those used for inspection of the interior of barrels, are
within the scope of this section.
8.2 General test requirements
The provisions of section 0 of IEC 598-1 apply, together with the requirements of 8.2.1.
The tests described in each appropriate section of part 1 shall be carried out in the order
rt 2.
listed in this section of pa
8.2.1 The requirements of the second paragraph of 0.4.2 of section 0 of IEC 598-1 do not
apply.
In general, four samples are necessary for the tests, three of which are subjected to the
tests of 8.6.6, the remaining sample being subjected to the other tests. For rubber
handlamps, an additional sample is necessary for the test of 8.12.1.
Where a range of similar handlamps is involved, the specified tests are made on a repre-
sentative complete set from the range. This set shall include handlamps, together with any
attachments, which represents the most unfavourable combination for testing purposes.
8.3 Definitions
For the purposes of this section, the definitions of section 1 of IEC 598-1 apply, together
with the following definitions:
1) Handlamp
A portable luminaire with a handle and a flexible cable or cord.
2) Rewirable handlamp
A handlamp so constructed that the flexible cable or cord can be replaced.
3) Non-rewirable handlamp
A handlamp so constructed that the flexible cable or cord cannot be separated from the
handlamp without making it permanently useless.

8.4 Classification of luminaires
Luminaires shall be classified in accordance with the provisions of section 2 of IEC 598-1
together with the requirements of 8.4.1 and 8.4.2.
8.4.1 According to the type of protection against electric shock, handlamps shall be
classified as class II or class Ill.
8.4.2 According to the method of connecting the cable or cord, handlamps shall be
classified as:
"rewirable handlamps", or
"non-rewirable handlamps".
8.5 Marking
The provisions of section 3 of IEC 598-1 apply, together with the requirements of 8.5.1,
where applicable.
8.5.1 The symbol for class II or class Ill, the marking for rated voltage of class Ill
handlamps and the symbol for the degree of protection against dust and moisture shall be
on the outside of the handlamp.
NOTE - This requirement is met if the marking is visible from the outside through a translucent cover.
The marking for maximum rated wattage shall not be in paint or ink, even when protected
by varnish.
Compliance shall be checked by inspection and by the test described in section 3 of
IEC 598-1.
8.6 Construction
The provision of section 4 of IEC 598-1 apply, together with the requirements of 8.6.1
to 8.6.6.
8.6.1 The shell and handle of handlamps shall be of insulating material.
Compliance shall be checked by inspection.
8.6.2 The lamp shall be protected against accidental damage by a protective grid, trans-
lucent cover or similar means. This device shall be rigidly fixed to the body of the
handlamp. For handlamps for tungsten filament lamps it shall not be possible to remove
the protecting device by hand and it shall be possible to replace the lamp without
completely removing this device from the handlamp.
NOTE - For example, the protective device may be moved away from its normal position but be still attached to the
handlamp by means of a hinge or chain.
If the device is of metal, it shall be so positioned or protected by insulation that it is not likely to be
inadvertently touched when holding the handle. The distance between the glass of the tungsten
filament lamp or the tubular fluorescent lamp or any protective glass and a plane through the out-
side of two adjacent bars of a protective grid, shall be at least 3 mm.

Suspension hooks, if any, shall be securely fixed to the handlamp.
Compliance shall be checked by inspection, by manual test and by measurement.
8.6.3 Handlamps shall not use resistive ballasts or resistive cables to limit the current in
discharge lamps.
8.6.4 Lampholders for tungsten filament lamps shall be locked against rotation by at least
two independent means, at least one of which shall be operable only with the aid of a tool.
The means of fixing shall not serve to fix any other part.
Compliance shall be checked by inspection and by manual test.
8.6.5 Ballasts or transformers where connected in the flexible cable or cord shall be at a
distance not greater than 1 m from the plug and equipped with a suspension hook.
Compliance shall be checked by inspection, by manual test and by measurement.
8.6.6 The test for mechanical strength described in 4.13 of section 4 of IEC 598-1 does
not apply.
Mechanical strength for handlamps shall be checked by the test described in 8.6.6.1 if
applicable, and by the tests described in 8.6.6.2.
8.6.6.1 The grid or guard protecting the lamp against damage is subjected to a pull.
of 250 N applied along the axis of the handlamp for 1 min.
The protective grid or guard shall remain in position.
8.6.6.2 The handlamp, fitted with a flexible cable or cord in accordance with the require-
ments of 8.10.2 and of suitable length, is subjected to two impact tests in which it is
caused to swing against a steel bar which is mounted on a solid wall of brick, stone
...
