Overview

EN IEC 61784-5-2:2018 is a European adoption of IEC 61784-5-2:2018 that defines installation profiles for CPF 2 (CIP™) industrial communication networks. It is part of the IEC 61784 series on industrial communication network profiles and focuses on practical, installation-level requirements for fieldbuses and CIP-based networks used in industrial automation. The annexes provide profile-specific instructions (ControlNet™, EtherNet/IP™, DeviceNet™) and are to be read in conjunction with IEC 61918:2018 (installation of communication networks in industrial premises).

Key topics and technical requirements

This standard provides structured, practical guidance for installing CPF 2 fieldbus networks. Major technical topics include:

  • Installation planning
    • Network capability definitions and planning requirements for CPF 2 profiles.
    • Documentation and cabling planning deliverables.
  • Cabling and components
    • Selection and use of cabling components, connectors and terminators specific to CPF 2 profiles.
    • Requirements for connector installation and cable routing.
  • Implementation practices
    • Device mounting, coding and labelling conventions.
    • Earthing, bonding and shield handling for reliable communications.
  • Verification and testing
    • Installation verification procedures and installation acceptance tests to confirm conformance.
    • As‑implemented documentation and validation checklists (profile-specific).
  • Administration, maintenance and troubleshooting
    • Operation-focused administration and lifecycle maintenance practices.
    • Profile-specific troubleshooting guidance and recommended checks.
  • Profile-specific annexes
    • Annex A: CP 2/1 (ControlNet™)
    • Annex B: CP 2/2 (EtherNet/IP™)
    • Annex C: CP 2/3 (DeviceNet™)
    • Annex D: Informative material including validation check sheets

Practical applications and users

EN IEC 61784-5-2:2018 is intended for anyone responsible for the design, installation, validation and upkeep of CIP-based fieldbus networks in industrial and process automation environments:

  • System integrators and automation contractors installing ControlNet, EtherNet/IP or DeviceNet networks
  • Electrical and network engineers planning cable routes, earthing and termination
  • Plant maintenance teams performing acceptance tests and troubleshooting communication faults
  • OEMs and panel builders documenting and administering as-built network installations
  • Compliance officers and project managers requiring standardized installation documentation for audits

Practical use cases include factory automation, process control loops, machine-level communications and plant-floor device networks where consistent, tested installations are required for reliable operation.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Tec
