EN 15597-2:2019 (E)
Introduction
This document is meant to assess the demands made on mobile spreading and spraying machines
operated in traffic.
For simplicity, in this document all machines are called “spreaders” also for liquid agent spraying.
Spreading machines (spreaders/gritters) are meant to be operated in such way that homogeneous
distribution of spreading media is given within the set spreading dosage, width and spreading pattern
track.
The static and dynamic test procedure has the task to test functionality and accuracy of the spreader.
With dynamic testing, the task is also to test the spreading pattern as much as possible under real
conditions. Therefore, the dynamic test is done with trucks driving realistic speeds.
To ensure the repeatability of the results and to limit the expenditure, the tests for the certification are
not done with all possible spreading agents and all possible parameters of the operational area of the
spreader. The salt for the test is limited to three defined test materials, also the brine is defined
(see Clause 5), and the dynamic tests are not done with the highest possible driving speeds. This does
not mean that the spreaders do not work with other materials or higher speeds. If the spreader is bound
to operate with other materials and/or higher speed, this is meant to be tested and adjusted
individually by the customer. Especially when driving at higher speeds, the influences of the driving
turbulences and the truck configuration upon which the spreader is mounted become very strong so
that it makes no sense to test this for the certification independent of the special truck.

5 Test materials
The materials used in Europe for winter maintenance are very different. The sodium chloride (NaCl)
has different granulometry according to the mine or production type, the humidity of these products is
very variable too. For this reason the test shall be done with one or more reference salts with the
characteristic shown in Tables 1 and 2.
Table 1 — Characteristics of the test material – Salt 1

SIST EN 15597-2:2020
EN 15597-2:2019 (E)
The de-icing material shall be stored protected from atmospheric moisture agent, in order to keep the
original characteristic during storage period.
The concentration of sodium chloride in the brine for pre-wetting or liquid spraying shall be between
20 % and 23 % by weight. This analysis shall be done prior each test.
The measured results shall be corrected according to the real NaCl content in the spreading material.
Each machine can be tested with one or more salts and different humidity, as shown in Tables 1 and 2,
in the certificate the type of salt used for test shall be reported.
6 Certification procedure
6.1 Principle of qualification procedure
The qualification procedure of the spreaders includes two tests types, one static and one dynamic. The
static test enables to check the right quantity, it is realized without moving the spreader. The dynamic
test enables checking the quality of spreading and spraying pattern, it is realized driving the spreader
vehicle during spreading operation on a test area.
According to the type of spreader tested, the qualification procedure sets the functioning parameters of
the machine. These spreading parameters are different for the static and dynamic tests.
Each spreader type, in order to be qualified, shall meet the requirements of the two tests (static and
dynamic).
During a qualification, it is only allowed to change the settings of spreading width, dosage, symmetry,
simulated speed, pre-wet on/off. In case of changing other parameters the whole test procedure shall be
restarted.
It is allowed to make pre-tests in order to be able to choose and test different settings. These tests will
not be taken as qualification tests. The manufacturer shall declare clearly after the pre-tests that he
wants to start with the qualification test procedure. Then only those test runs after this declaration will
count for official qualification and the qualification test requirements become valid.
6.2 Identification and requirements on spreader types
A spreader type includes a spreader and a control box. The spreader and the control box shall be
identified in the manufacturer’s production (for instance: model number), and shall respect
EN 15597-1.
The modification of the components influencing the spreading performances defined in Annex A
involves the definition of a new machine model, a new procedure of qualification shall be realized for
this new model.

6.3 Procedure of the static test
6.3.1 General
The static test consists to verify, with weighing, the precision and regularity of test material flow and
right quantity. It is realized without moving the spreader, consequently vehicle speeds shall be
simulated.
— The spreader shall conform to EN 15597-1 (general technical information).
— For the spreaders having an auxiliary engine, the manufacturer's advices shall be respected.
— For the spreaders driven by the vehicle hydraulics, EN 15431 shall be applied (respect of the engine
nominal speed).
— For the spreaders driven by the pump mounted on wheel, an independent system will have to
ensure the pump rotation at the speed needed by the test.
— For the spreaders driven by the pump flanged on a vehicle wheel, an independent system will have
to ensure the pump rotation needed by the test, applying a theoretical diameter of the vehicle tire
of 1 m.
For spreaders working with pre-wetted thawing media, the tests shall be done collecting the two media
concurrently but in separate bins (disconnection of injection pipes of the brine). If the nozzle influence
the flow, shall remain mounted on the pipe during the test.
For spreaders working with liquid, the test shall be done collecting liquid of the spraying devices (e.g.
nozzles) related to the spraying width.
The requirements on the methods and equipment are described in 6.3.3.

For spreader types for solid thawing media the test shall be realized with not pre-wetted and pre-
wetted salt (if the machine has this option). The tests with pre-wetted salt will be realized with a
standard ratio of 30 % between solid and liquid, respecting EN 15597-1. The manufacturer, in addition
to the standard ratio of 30 %, can do other tests with different ratio. In this case the chosen ratio
solid/liquid shall be indicated in the final report with the results.
For spreader types for pre-wetted thawing media, during the tests, the quantities of salt and brine shall
be measured separately.
6.3.3 Method of the static test
6.3.3.1 Test conditions
— The static tests shall be realized indoor: the air temperature shall be between 5°C and 30°C.
— The air temperature shall be indicated in the test report.
— The test will start when all the conditions of the hydraulic circuit advised by the manufacturer have
been respected.
— The static test shall be done with the hopper and/or brine tanks of the spreader loaded > 1/2.
— The precision of the weighing system shall be max. ± 0,3 % of the calculated amount of material
delivered during each static test.
— The frequency of measure of the weighing system shall be 10 Hz.

6.3.3.2 Spreader types for not pre-wetted spreading agent
— The test is realized with the spreading disc tilted up not in operation for pre-wetted and not pre-
wetted spreaders.
— The test is made on a simulated spreading length of 200 m.
— The collecting time useful for the test is calculated according to the spreading length (200 m) and
the simulated speed chosen.
— The collection of salt for weighing operation shall be done without influences of manual operation,
the procedure of which is described as follows:
1) Place the bins on the weighing systems before starting the test in a way, to receive the
spreading agents from spreader. Liquid and solid spreading agent shall be collected and
weighed separately.
2) Operate the spreader with START function.
3) After 5 s and up to 10 s start to measure memorizing the weight flow (10 Hz).
4) After t ± 0,1 s (the time related to 200 m) STOP the measurement.
200
5) After ≥ 5 s from STOP of measurement stop the spreader operation.
6) The mass of material collected in the time t shall be reported in the test results.
200
6.3.3.3 Spreader types for pre-wetted spreading agent
— During the tests, the quantities of dry salt and brine will have to be measured in two separate bins,
but simultaneously.
— The measure on dry salt and brine follows the method described previously in paragraph 6.3.3.2
from point 1 to point 5.
— The brine injection system will be disconnected from their usual place and placed in the way to
eject all the liquid in the liquid bin without influencing the weight (no contact with bin).
— All instructions will be taken to create the weighing system of the brine, in order not to disturb the
original flowing conditions.
6.3.3.4 Sprayer types for liquid spreading agent
— For the test the spraying liquid is collected in a bin from all spraying devices (nozzles or disc)
related to the spraying width at one time.
— The measure of brine follows the method described previously in paragraph 6.3.3.2 from point 1 to
point 5.

6.3.5 Development of the tests
Each test will be done 2 times. Consequently, if one of the two results does not meet the requirements, it
will be possible to perform a third test.
If the third test does not meet the requirements, the machine is not qualified.
All the qualification tests shall be listed in the report.
6.4 Dynamic test procedure
6.4.1 Spreading start
When the carrier vehicle starts moving from a stand still it shall be ensured that spreading agent is
spread after a moving distance of maximum 3,0 m. This shall be verified visually in the following way:
a) design on the ground 2 lines with distance of 3 m;
b) start to move the truck in spreading mode with the wheel of the last axle, on the first line;
c) when the wheel of the last axle of the truck is on the second line, the spreader shall deliver the
spreading agent.
6.4.2 Test parameters
The parameters applicable for the test are shown in Tables 10 to 12.

The certificate will have one sentence reporting the test related to the spreader type passed as shown in
Table 3.
For the same model, the manufacturer can do different qualifications with different “test
material/spreader type”.

SIST EN 15597-2:2020
EN 15597-2:2019 (E)

This shall be verified visually in the following way:
a) design on the ground 2 lines with distance of 3 m;
b) start to move the truck in spreading mode with the wheel of the last axle, on the first line;
c) when the wheel of the last axle of the truck is on the second line, the spreader shall deliver the
spreading agent.
6.4.2 Test parameters
The parameters applicable for the test are shown in Tables 10 to 12.

Introduction
This document is meant to assess the demands made on mobile spreading machines operated in traffic.
Spreading machines (spreaders/gritters) are meant to be operated in such way that homogeneous
distribution of spreading media is given within the set spreading dosage, width and spreading pattern
track.
The dynamic test procedure has the task to test functionality and accuracy of the spreader and the
spreading pattern as much as possible under real conditions. So the test is made with real speed driving
truck.
To ensure the repeatability of the results and to limit the expenditure the tests for the certification are
made not with all possible spreading agents and all possible parameters of the operational area of the
spreader. The salt for the test is limited to three defined test materials (see chapter 5), and the dynamic
tests are made not with the highest possible driving speeds. This does not mean that the spreaders do not
work with other materials or higher speeds. If the spreader shall operate with other materials and/or
higher speed this is meant to be tested and adjusted individually by the customer. Especially by driving
with higher speeds the influences of the driving turbulences and the truck configuration where the
spreader is mounted on become very strong so that it makes no sense to test this for the certification
independent of the special truck.

4 Definition
The table reference for different types of spreader is shown in EN 15597-1:2009, 4.1.
5 Test materials
The materials used in Europe for winter maintenance are very different. The sodium chloride (NaCl) has
different granulometry according to the mine or production type, the humidity of these products is very
variable too. For this reason the test shall be done with one or more reference salts with the characteristic
shown in the Tables 1 and 2.

The characteristics of the delivered test material shall be guaranteed and verified by the salt supplier. An
official certificate of material delivered by material supplier shall be attached to the test report.
The de-icing material shall be stored protected from atmospheric moisture agent, in order to keep the
original characteristic during storage period.
The concentration of sodium chloride in the brine for pre-wetting or liquid spraying shall be between
22 % and 23 % by weight. This analysis shall be done prior each test.
The measured results shall be corrected according to the real NaCl content in the spreading material.
Each machine can be tested with one or more salts and different humidity, as shown in Tables 1 and 2, in
the certificate the type of salt used for test shall be reported.
6 Certification procedure
6.1 Principle of qualification procedure
The qualification procedure of the spreaders or sprayers includes two tests types, one static and one
dynamic. The static test enables to check the right quantity, it is realized without moving the spreader. The
dynamic test enables to check the quality of spreading and spraying pattern, it is realized driving the
spreader vehicle during spreading operation on a test area.
According to the type of spreader tested, the qualification procedure sets the functioning parameters of
the machine. These spreading parameters are different for the static and dynamic tests.
Each spreader type, in order to be qualified, shall meet the requirements of the two tests (static and
dynamic).
8

---------------------- Page: 10 ----------------------
oSIST prEN 15597-2:2017
prEN 15597-2:2017 (E)
During a qualification, it is only allowed to change the settings of spreading width, dosage, symmetry,
simulated speed, pre-wet on/off. In case of changing other parameters the whole test procedure shall be
restarted.
It is allowed to make pre-tests in order to be able to choose and test different settings. These tests will not
be taken as qualification tests. The manufacturer shall declare clearly after the pre-tests that he wants to
start with the qualification test procedure. Then only those test runs after this declaration will count for
official qualification and the qualification test requirements become valid.
6.2 Identification and requirements on spreader types
A spreader type includes a spreader and a control box. The spreader and the control box shall be
identified in the manufacturer’s production (for instance: model number), and shall respect the actual
European standards.
The modification of the components influencing the spreading performances defined in Annex A involves
the definition of a new machine model, a new procedure of qualification shall be realized for this new
model.

The certificate will have one sentence reporting the test related to the spreader type passed.
For the same model, the manufacturer can do different qualifications with different “test material /
spreader type”.
6.3 Procedure of the static test
6.3.1 General
The static test consists to verify, with weighing, the precision and regularity of test material flow and right
quantity. It is realized without moving the spreader, consequently vehicle speeds shall be simulated by its
control box (EN 15597-1 standard).
• For the spreaders/sprayers having an auxiliary engine, the manufacturer’s advices shall be respected;
• For the spreaders/sprayers driven by the vehicle hydraulics, the EN 15431 standard shall be applied
(respect of the engine nominal speed);
• For the spreaders/sprayers driven by the pump mounted on wheel, an independent system will have
to ensure the pump rotation at the speed needed by the test;
9

---------------------- Page: 11 ----------------------
oSIST prEN 15597-2:2017
prEN 15597-2:2017 (E)
• For the spreaders/sprayers driven by the pump flanged on a vehicle wheel, an independent system
will have to ensure the pump rotation needed by the test, applying a theoretical diameter of the
vehicle tire of 1m.
For spreaders working with pre-wetted thawing media, the tests shall be done collecting the two media
concurrently but in separate bins (disconnection of injection pipes of the brine). If the nozzle influence the
flow, shall remain mounted on the pipe during the test.
For spreaders working with liquid, the test shall be done collecting liquid of the spraying devices (e.g.
nozzles) related to the spraying width.
The requirements on the methods and equipment are described in 6.3.3.
6.3.2 Description of static qualification tests per spreader type
Tables 4 to 9 show the tests series which have to be realized for each spreader type with different

For spreader types for solid thawing media the test shall be realized with not pre-wetted and pre-wetted
salt (if the machine has this option). The tests with pre-wetted salt will be realized with a standard ratio of
30 % between solid and liquid, respecting the standard EN 15597-1. The manufacturer, in addition to the
standard ratio of 30 %, can do other tests with different ratio. In this case the chosen ratio solid/liquid
shall be indicated in the final report with the results.
For spreader types for pre-wetted thawing media, during the tests, the quantities of salt and brine have to
be measured separately.
6.3.3 Method of the static test
6.3.3.1 Test conditions
— The static tests shall be realized indoor:
a) the air temperature shall be between 5°C and 30°C. The air temperature shall be indicated in the
test report;
b) the test will start when all the conditions of the hydraulic circuit advised by the manufacturer
have been respected;
— the static test shall be done with the hopper and/or brine tanks of the spreader loaded > 1/3.

prEN 15597-2:2017 (E)
a) The precision of the weighing system shall be max. ± 0,3 % of the calculated amount of material
delivered during each static test
— The frequency of measure of the weighing system shall be 10 Hz.
6.3.3.2 Spreader types for not pre-wetted thawing media
— The test is realized with the spreading disc tilted up not in operation;
— the test is made on a simulated spreading length of 200 m
— the collecting time useful for the test is calculated according to the spreading length (200 m) and
the simulated speed chosen;
— the collection of salt for weighing operation shall be done without influences of manual operation,
following is described the procedure:
1. place the bin on the weighing system under the conveyor exit
2. operate the spreader with START function
3. after ≥ 5 s. start to measure memorizing the weight flow (10 Hz)
4. after the time related to 200 mt, STOP the measurement
5. after ≥ 5 s. from STOP of measurement stop the spreader operation
6.3.3.3 Spreader types for pre-wetted media
— During the tests, the quantities of dry salt and brine will have to be measured in two separate bins,
but simultaneously.
— the measure on dry salt and brine follows the method described previously in paragraph 6.3.2.2 from
point 1 to point 5;
— the brine injection system will be disconnected from their usual place and placed in the way to eject
all the liquid in the liquid bin without influencing the weight (no contact with bin);
— all instructions will be taken to create the weighing system of the brine, in order not to disturb the
original flowing conditions.
6.3.3.4 Sprayer types for liquid thawing media
— For the test the spraying liquid is collected from all spraying devices (nozzles or disc) related to the
spraying width at one time.
— the measure of brine follows the method described previously in paragraph 6.3.3.2 from point 1 to
point 5
— the test is made on a simulated spraying length of 200 m;
— the collecting time useful for the test is calculated according to this spraying length of 200 m and the
simulated speed chosen;
6.3.4 Requirements on performance
Any spreader tested following the conditions of the static test, shall fulfil the following tolerances:
12

---------------------- Page: 14 ----------------------
oSIST prEN 15597-2:2017
prEN 15597-2:2017 (E)
— The max. difference between the effective dosage and the theoretical dosage of the test will have to be
less than ± 6 %;
Requirements on spreader start:
— for the simultaneous start of the carrying vehicle and spreader, the spreading shall start from the
third meter driven;
— for a spreading speed lower than the min. speed of the range of each spreader type, the dosage really
applied will have to be higher or equal to the dosage fixed on the control box.
6.3.5 Development of the tests
Each test will be done 2 times consequently, if one of the two results does not meet the requirements, it
will be possible to perform a third test.
If the third test does not meet the requirements, the machine is not qualified.
Two tests have to be positive, and the results of both passed tests shall be given in the test report.

For spreader types with option spreading pre-wetted salt the test shall be conducted with dry salt and
pre- wetted salt, with a standard ratio of 30 % liquid and 70 % solid, respecting the standard EN 15597-1.
Before the test the spreader shall be loaded with an homogenous level of solid material inside the hopper,
and when each dynamic test is finished the hopper and/or tank shall be loaded more than 1/3.
The dynamic test shall be done with symmetric and asymmetric spreading/spraying pattern as described
in the Tables 10, 11 and 12.
On demand of the manufacturer, additional tests with higher speeds or different ratio between solid and
liquid, can be done respecting the others parameters in the Tables 10, 11 and 12. The results shall be
written in the report. This additional tests will not have influence on the spreader certification, only the
tests in the Tables 10, 11 and 12 are influencing the final result.
