Overview
EN ISO 3459:2022 - “Plastic piping systems - Mechanical joints between fittings and pressure pipes - Test method for leaktightness under negative pressure” - is a CEN-endorsed adoption of ISO 3459:2022. It specifies two laboratory test procedures for verifying the leaktightness of assembled mechanical joints (non‑fusion) between fittings and plastic pressure pipes with diameters up to and including 63 mm when the joint is subjected to external pressure or internal vacuum.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to mechanical joints regardless of fitting design or material; not applicable to fusion-welded joints. Supersedes EN ISO 3459:2015.
- Two procedures
- Procedure A (pressure outside): Pipe interior open to atmosphere while an enclosed tank applies external hydraulic pressure to the joint.
- Procedure B (vacuum inside): A partial vacuum is drawn inside the pipe while atmospheric pressure acts externally.
- Test parameters required by the referring standard (or Annex A if unspecified):
- Test medium, test pressure, duration, test temperature, free length.
- Apparatus examples
- Procedure A: enclosed tank, hydraulic pump (pressure control ±0.05 bar), pressure gauge, temperature control (±2 °C), visual access.
- Procedure B: vacuum pump, vacuum gauge (accuracy ±0.01 bar), shut‑off valve, end‑seals and thermometers.
- Specimen and preparation
- Test pieces consist of fitting(s) assembled with pipe segments; assembly per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Components shall not be tested until 24 h after production (shorter preconditioning allowed for practical reasons; 24 h in disputes).
- Pipe/fitting dimensions should ideally be near tolerance extremes to simulate worst‑case sealing conditions.
- Procedure highlights
- Conditioning and temperature stabilization, drying the internal surface (Procedure A), staged pressure application with minimum hold times (typically 1 hour at each stage), and inspection for leakage.
- Test report requirements and measurable criteria for accepting leaktightness are defined in the standard.
Practical applications
- Quality assurance and type testing of mechanical fittings and joint systems for water distribution, drainage, and other fluid transport where negative pressure or external loading could occur.
- Verification of joint performance in product development, manufacturing QC, conformity assessment and third‑party certification.
- Useful for manufacturers, test laboratories, standards bodies, product certification agencies, and installers specifying compliant components.
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers of plastic pipes and mechanical fittings
- Independent test laboratories performing leaktightness testing
- Certification bodies and compliance engineers
- Design and installation professionals specifying components for systems exposed to vacuum or external pressure
Related standards / notes
- EN ISO 3459:2022 was prepared by ISO/TC 138 and CEN/TC 155 and is intended to be referenced by other product or system standards specifying test parameter values. Always consult the referring standard for project‑specific test conditions.
