Overview

CEN/TS 1993-1-101:2022 - Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures, Part 1‑101 - provides an alternative interaction method for the stability verification of steel members subjected to axial compression and bending. Prepared as a Technical Specification consistent with EN 1993‑1‑1:2022, this document re‑uses the interaction approach formerly given in Annex A of EN 1993‑1‑1:2005. It is intended for uniform steel members with double‑symmetric cross‑sections under axial compression and bi‑axial bending. National Annexes determine the applicability of this CEN/TS in each country.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Alternative method for combined axial compression and bending verification (bi‑axial bending).
    • Applies to uniform, double‑symmetric cross‑sections; national choice governed by EN 1993‑1‑1 National Annex.
  • Interaction method
    • Uses interaction factors (kij) and reduction factors (χ) to combine axial and bending effects.
    • Consistent notation and symbols with EN 1993‑1‑1:2022.
    • Provides formulae for verifying members under combined N (axial) and My/Mz (bending) including simplified criteria when out‑of‑plane buckling is prevented.
  • Buckling and reduction factors
    • Includes flexural buckling factors (χy, χz) and lateral‑torsional buckling factor (χLT) per EN 1993‑1‑1.
    • Gives guidance for equivalent uniform moment factors (C) and auxiliary values needed to determine interaction coefficients.
  • Design assumptions
    • Covers different cross‑section classes (Class 1–4) and plastic/elastic properties as referenced to EN 1993‑1‑1.
    • References partial factors, slenderness parameters and critical buckling loads consistent with Eurocode rules.

Applications and users

  • Practical uses:
    • Stability checks for columns, compression‑and‑bending members in buildings and other steel structures where the alternative interaction approach is preferred.
    • Implementation in structural design offices and engineering software for combined loading checks.
  • Key users:
    • Structural engineers and designers applying Eurocode 3.
    • Software developers integrating Eurocode stability checks.
    • Manufacturers, contractors and authorities verifying compliance with Eurocode procedures.
    • Educators and standards committees referencing alternative methods for design practice.

Related standards

  • EN 1993‑1‑1:2022 - Eurocode 3: General rules and rules for buildings (primary reference).
  • National Annexes to EN 1993‑1‑1:2022 - determine national application/choices for CEN/TS 1993‑1‑101.
  • Other Eurocode parts addressing execution, materials and testing as referenced in EN 1993 series.

During the revision of EN 1993-1-1:2005, the standardization committee CEN/TC 250/SC 3 took a
decision to retain the method provided in Annex B in EN 1993-1-1:2022 and to move the method of
Annex A into a separate document, i.e. this document, for reasons of ease of use, without significant
modifications.
This document is therefore to be considered as an alternative method to the one given in
EN 1993-1-1:2022. Its applicability can be defined for each country, by the National Annex of
EN 1993-1-1:2022.
This document, which was prepared in line with the Eurocodes, is intended for use by designers, clients,
manufacturers, constructors, relevant authorities (in exercising their duties in accordance with
national or international regulations), educators, software developers, and committees drafting
standards for related product, testing and execution standards.
NOTE Some aspects of design are most appropriately specified by relevant authorities or, where not
specified, can be agreed on a project-specific basis between relevant parties such as designers and clients. The
Eurocodes identify such aspects making explicit reference to relevant authorities and relevant parties.
0.2 Verbal forms used in the Eurocodes
The verb “shall" expresses a requirement strictly to be followed and from which no deviation is
permitted in order to comply with the Eurocodes.
The verb “should” expresses a highly recommended choice or course of action. Subject to national
regulation and/or any relevant contractual provisions, alternative approaches could be used/adopte
