Figure 1 — Typical freezer bags 4 General characteristics and requirements 4.1 Dimensional characteristics 4.1.1 Effective volume By convention, the effective volume is calculated using Formula (1): Vu = [ Pm2/ (Lm - Pm/2 – Z) -Sm3]10-6
(1) where Vu is the effective volume, expressed in dm3; Lm, is the arithmetic mean, expressed in millimetres, of the two measurements of the length, L, made along the lateral edges on a bag. Pm, is the arithmetic mean, expressed in millimetres, of the two measurements of the width, P, made, at the top and bottom, on a bag. Sm, is the half arithmetic mean, expressed in millimetres, of the two measurements of the width of gusset, 2S, made each side on a bag.
SIST EN 14867:2005
EN 14867:2005 (E) 8 Z is a value, expressed in mm, taking into account the closure system, (see Figure 1):
Z = 0 for bags with zipper;
Z = 30 for bags with tie closure (reservation for tying). NOTE The effective volume is not related to the permissible load. 4.1.2 Requirements The supplier shall declare the nominal width Pn and the nominal length Ln, expressed in millimetres. When tested in accordance with test methods as specified in Table 1, the plastics freezer bag shall have dimensional characteristics conforming to the requirements given in Table 1.

4.3 Requirements for fitness for purpose 4.3.1 Suitability for writing The bags shall be provided with a printed area, reserved for writing. The area reserved exclusively for writing shall be greater than 15 cm². The control shall be carried out in accordance with 5.3.1. The printing on the bag and text written with a ball point (greasy ink) shall withstand wiping with a pure cellulose piece of paper after passing through water. 4.3.2 Transparency of the film The bag constituent film shall be sufficiently transparent in order to allow legibility through ten stacked layers (five bags). The control shall be carried out in accordance with 5.3.2. 4.3.3 Water tightness When tested in accordance with 5.3.3, the bags shall remain watertight. 4.3.4 Veil One of the faces of each veil shall not be smooth. 4.4 Suitability for food contact 4.4.1 General The bag constituent materials shall conform to the requirements of all relevant national and/or European regulations. SIST EN 14867:2005
EN 14867:2005 (E) 10 4.4.2 Overall migration The assessment of the overall migration on contact with simulation liquids applied to the freezer bags shall be carried out in accordance with 5.4.1. NOTE The limit adopted by current regulations should be in accordance with annex n° 1 of the directive n° 2002/72/EC[1] of August 06, 2002. 4.4.3 Residual solvents quantity The attention of the supplier is drawn on the requirements of all relevant national and/or European regulations relating to the quantity of residual solvents used for printing in flexible packaging. If required, Annex A gives test methods for the quantitative determination of residual solvents used for printing. 4.4.4 Organoleptic criterion When tested in accordance with 5.4.2, the plastics freezer bags shall not modify the odour and the taste of the food contained therein. The odour threshold of the material shall be at the maximum level 2 (low odour). The threshold of odour and taste transmitted to water shall be at the maximum level 1 (transmitted odour or taste, barely perceptible). 4.5 Requirements for packaging and handling the freezer bags The quantity of complete bags contained in the primary packaging shall be equal to or greater than the number of bags stated on the packaging. For bags with tie closure, the number of ties included with the primary packaging shall be equal to or greater than the number of bags stated on the primary packaging. The bags shall be able to be easily separated and shall be easy to open. 5 Test methods 5.1 Dimensional test methods 5.1.1 Sampling Unless otherwise specified, for each test take five bags at random from five primary packagings, at the rate of one bag per primary packaging and cut out the test pieces from the middle of each bag. 5.1.2 Apparatus 5.1.2.1 Rule, capable of measuring to an accuracy of 1 mm. 5.1.2.2 Micrometer, capable of measuring thickness in accordance with ISO 4593. 5.1.3 Conditioning Unless otherwise specified in the test method, the test pieces shall be conditioned and tested at room temperature, between 10 °C and
