Overview

SIST EN 13920-15:2004 is a European standard developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) that defines the requirements for decoated aluminium scrap obtained from post-consumer aluminium packaging. The standard focuses on scrap generated through processes such as pyrolysis, mechanical or chemical delamination, or combinations of these methods, as well as aluminium scrap separated from incinerator bottom ash.

This standard is integral to the aluminium recycling process, ensuring that reclaimed aluminium packaging scrap meets defined characteristics and chemical composition, improving the quality and reliability of recycled metal for downstream applications.

Key Topics

  • Scrap Characteristics: Specifies that decoated aluminium scrap should not contain free iron, heavy oxidation, or fines less than 1 mm, and must be free of non-metallic foreign materials.
  • Chemical Composition: Outlines required purity, with specific limits for alloying elements such as silicon, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, zinc, lead, and tin.
  • Metal Yield: Requires a minimum metal yield of 80% in the as-delivered state, with actual yields varying depending on the decoating process used.
  • Ordering Information: Producers and recyclers must provide detailed information regarding the scrap category, batch weight, delivery periods, and, optionally, origin and physical condition.
  • Classification and Non-Conformities: Follows procedures for sampling, testing, and dispute resolution in line with EN 13920-1.

Applications

SIST EN 13920-15:2004 delivers value across the aluminium recycling supply chain, particularly for:

  • Metal Recyclers: Enables the purchase and processing of consistent-quality decoated aluminium scrap ready for melting and reuse in new products.
  • Packaging Recovery Operators: Supports efficient recovery of used aluminium packaging, such as cans and containers, by ensuring that decoating processes produce recyclable material.
  • Foundries and Secondary Melters: Improves input quality for melting operations, reducing contaminants and increasing yield, which is key for cost-effective aluminium alloy production.
  • Waste Management Companies: Provides clear requirements for sorting and supplying aluminium scrap separated from municipal incinerator ash streams.

By standardizing scrap characteristics and composition, businesses can optimize processing performance, lower costs, and support environmental goals by maximizing the recyclability of post-consumer aluminium packaging.

Related Standards

SIST EN 13920-15:2004 is part of the wider EN 13920 series covering various forms of aluminium and aluminium alloy scrap. Relevant related standards include:

  • EN 13920-1: General requirements, sampling, and tests for aluminium scrap.
  • EN 13920-14: Scrap from post-consumer aluminium packagings.
  • EN 12258-3: Terms and definitions for aluminium scrap.
  • Additional parts of EN 13920, covering specific scrap types such as beverage cans, radiators, castings, and shredded materials.

These standards provide a framework for quality control and standardization in aluminium scrap trading and processing, helping to foster a circular economy in the aluminium industry.
