This International Standard specifies graphical symbols for the purposes of public information. This International Standard is generally applicable to public information symbols in all locations and all sectors where the public has access. However, it is not applicable to safety signs or to those sectors subject to a regulation which may differ with regard to certain points of this International Standard (for example, traffic signs on the public highway). This International Standard specifies the symbol originals that may be scaled for reproduction and application purposes. The symbols may be used in conjunction with text to improve comprehension.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

Introduction
The reason for the publication of this International Standard is the increasing use of non-verbal presentation of
information in buildings and other places, and for services used by the public. Graphical symbols should be
used where text messages might be a barrier to understanding.
Continued growth in international trade, travel and tourism requires a common method of communication and
standardization of public information symbols will help both provider and users, including those with disabilities.
Lack of standardization may lead to confusion.
The use of standardized public information symbols does not replace the need for careful consideration and
application of wayfinding and signing schemes; it is recognized that pubic information symbols will often be
used with text in signing systems. This may aid education and comprehension particularly for new symbols
and those which have less common usage.
ISO 7001 is intended to be used by all Technical Committees within ISO charged with developing specific
public information symbols for their industry, to ensure that there is only one symbol for each meaning. It is
also intended that this International Standard be revised regularly to include public information symbols as
they are standardized by ISO and which conform to the principles for development as developed by
ISO/TC 145/SC 1.
Specific acceptance criteria, procedures and application forms can be found on the ISO/TC 145/SC 1 website,
http://www.iso.org/tc145/sc1.
The public information symbols in this International Standard have been validated by ISO/TC 145/SC 1
according to procedures of standardization current at the time of publication. Future standardization of public
information symbols will be facilitated with suitable evaluation techniques such as the testing outlined in
ISO 9186. Acceptance criteria for public information symbol qualification ought to be such that there is
confidence that a suitable proportion of the intended audience will understand them. Further design criteria will
be added as appropriate and will be approved by ISO/TC 145/SC 1.
Public information symbols given in this International Standard are considered to have achieved a satisfactory
degree of comprehension as established by independent testing or as a result of their use and application at
an international level.
NOTE The public information symbols given in this International Standard can be reproduced as published. However,
it is recognized that there may be particular national characteristics and cultural requirements which may require minor
variations. This is acceptable providing the key elements and design intent of the standardized symbol is not compromised.

1 Scope

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 17724 and the following apply.

visually perceptible figure with a particular meaning used to transmit information independently of language

public information symbol
graphical symbol intended to give information to the general public, the understanding of which is independent
of specialist or occupational training

sign giving a general safety message, obtained by a combination of a colour and geometric shape and which,
by the addition of a graphical symbol, gives a particular safety message

4 General
4.1 Size
The public information symbols given in this International Standard are designed to be reproduced in a variety
of sizes to suit different applications from, for example, small-scale orientation notices to large-scale
wayfinding signs.
4.2 Text
The graphical symbols have been designed with the intention that they can be used on their own to convey
the information described in the meaning (except the direction arrow, which cannot be used on its own, see
4.3). However, they may be combined with the relevant text on a sign or notice, etc., if considered appropriate.
This might be an advantage with less well established symbols to aid understanding.
4.3 Arrows
The direction arrow (symbol number PI PF 030) shall only be used in conjunction with another symbol (or a
symbol and text) to indicate movement of a person towards something. An example is shown in Figure 1.

4.4 Colour and contrast
The public information symbols given in this International Standard may be reproduced in any colour.
However, the combination of safety colours and shapes specified in ISO 3864-1 shall be avoided to ensure
there is no confusion between public information symbols and safety signs. This also applies to arrows where
the use of green and white shall be avoided to ensure that there is no confusion with the direction arrow, safe
condition, used for evacuation routes.
Adequate contrast between the symbol and its background is essential and the symbol should be given a
sufficiently large surrounding area to ensure identifiability. All illustrations of graphical symbols in this
International Standard have corner marks to give an indication of the minimum area required.
4.5 Negation
Public information symbols shall be negated only for comfort or convenience reasons.
Where the whole activity is to be negated, the negation element shall be a diagonal bar running from top left to
bottom right as shown in Figure 3. In order to ensure that there is no confusion with safety signs, there shall
not be a surrounding circle. The negation bar shall be placed over the graphical symbol. The graphical symbol
shall be designed in such a way that when placed in the template specified in 7.2 of ISO 22727:2007 the
negation bar does not obscure critical details.
Where only a graphical symbol element in a public information symbol is to be negated to indicate a particular
forbidden action, the negation element shall be a cross as shown in Figure 4. The negation cross shall be
placed over the graphical symbol element which is being negated.
The negation bar and the negation cross should normally be red.

5 Meanings and categorization of public information symbols
5.1 General
The following summaries (Tables 1 and 2) are provided to facilitate the search for standardized public
information symbols.
This International Standard is to be maintained electronically through the use of a database. The indexes of
this database are to be used in these overviews as search engines with each standardized public information
symbol having a reference number.
5.2 Meaning
Table 1 gives the list of meanings in alphabetical order and provides the reference number.
5.3 Categorization
For the convenience of users, the public information symbols in ISO 7001 have been grouped according to the
areas where they are normally expected to be used. However, these groupings are not intended to be
exclusive and the use of the public information symbols in other areas, where this is considered appropriate, is
not precluded. The public information symbols are categorized as follows:
⎯ PF public facilities;
⎯ TF transport facilities;
⎯ TC tourism, culture and heritage;
⎯ SA sporting activities;
⎯ CF commercial facilities;
⎯ BP behaviour of the public (excluding public safety).
Table 2 summarizes the standardized public information symbols in terms of these categorizations.
Each public information symbol should normally be used to convey only one public information message, and
should normally be placed in one category only.

6 Standardized public information symbols
Tables 3 to 8 give symbol originals in a uniform 70 mm size with corner marks to enable accurate enlargement
and reduction scaling. The symbol illustrations are shown without borders in order to allow for consistent
reproduction scaling, though the use of borders is encouraged. The symbols should be reproduced exactly as
shown in Tables 3 to 8. However, some degree of graphical modification is permitted when national and
cultural differences or special application formats need to be considered, provided comprehension of the sign
is maintained. Consistent reproduction and use of these symbols will lead to a progressively improved degree
of comprehension at the international level.

In cases where the orientation of the symbol is not essential to its meaning, the orientation may be changed.
A graphical symbol should normally be a filled-in form.

Предисловие
Международная организация по стандартизации (ISO) является всемирной федерацией национальных
организаций по стандартизации (комитетов-членов ISO). Разработка международных стандартов
обычно осуществляется техническими комитетами ISO. Каждый комитет-член, заинтересованный в
деятельности, для которой был создан технический комитет, имеет право быть представленным в этом
комитете. Международные правительственные и неправительственные организации, имеющие связи с
ISO, также принимают участие в работах. ISO работает в тесном сотрудничестве с Международной
электротехнической комиссией (IEC) по всем вопросам стандартизации в области электротехники.
Международные стандарты разрабатываются в соответствии с правилами, установленными в
Директивах ISO/IEC, Часть 2.
Основная задача технических комитетов состоит в подготовке международных стандартов. Проекты
международных стандартов, одобренные техническими комитетами, рассылаются комитетам-членам
на голосование. Их опубликование в качестве международных стандартов требует одобрения, по
меньшей мере, 75 % комитетов-членов, принимающих участие в голосовании.

Введение
Причиной публикации настоящего международного стандарта является возрастающее использование
невербального представления информации в зданиях и других местах, а также по услугам,
предоставляемым населению. Графические символы должны использоваться в тех случаях, когда
текстовые сообщения могут оказаться трудными для понимания.
Непрерывное развитие международной торговли, путешествий и туризма требует разработки общего
метода передачи информации, и стандартизация информационных символов для общественных мест
может помочь как провайдерам, так и пользователям, включая лиц с ограниченными возможностями.
Отсутствие стандартизации может приводить к путанице.
Использование стандартизованных информационных символов для общественных мест не отменяет
необходимость тщательного рассмотрения и применения схем определения маршрутов и схем
дорожных знаков и указателей. Признано, что информационные символы для общественных мест
могут часто использоваться вместе с текстом в системах дорожных знаков и указателей. Это может
помочь обучению и пониманию символов, в частности, в случае новых символов и символов, которые
не нашли широкого применения.
ISO 7001 предназначается для использования всеми Техническими комитетами ISO, на которые
возлагается ответственность за разработку отдельных общедоступных информационных символов
для их отраслей производства так, чтобы каждому значению соответствовал только один символ.
Также подразумевается, что настоящий международный стандарт должен регулярно
пересматриваться для включения информационных символов для общественных мест,
соответствующих принципам разработки символов, установленных ISO/TC 145/SC 1, по мере того, как
они стандартизируются ISO.

Информационные символы для общественных мест в настоящем международном стандарте были
валидированы ISO/TC 145/SC 1 в соответствии с процедурами стандартизации, действующими на
время публикации. Будущая стандартизация информационных символов для общественных мест
может быть облегчена с использованием соответствующих методов оценивания, например, испытаний,
описанных в ISO 9186. Критерии приемки квалификации информационных символов для
общественных мест должны быть такими, чтобы соответствующая часть избранной аудитории
понимала их. Дополнительные критерии проектирования символов при необходимости будут
добавлены и утверждены ISO/TC 145/SC 1.
Считается, что информационные символы для общественных мест, представленные в настоящем
международном стандарте, обеспечивают достаточное понимание, как установлено независимыми
испытаниями или результатами их использования и применения на международном уровне.
ПРИМЕЧАНИЕ Информационные символы для общественных мест, представленные в настоящем
международном стандарте, могут быть воспроизведены после публикации. Однако признано, что могут
существовать отдельные национальные характеристики и культурные потребности, что может привести к

Графические символы. Информационные символы для
общественных мест
1 Область применения
Настоящий международный стандарт устанавливает графические символы с целью предоставления
общедоступной информации.
Данный международный стандарт в целом распространяется на информационные символы для
общественных мест, устанавливаемые во всех местах и во всех секторах, к которым имеет доступ
население. Однако он не распространяется на предупредительные знаки или на сектора,
подчиняющиеся правилам, которые могут отличаться в отношении некоторых пунктов настоящего
международного стандарта (например, дорожные знаки на шоссе общего пользования).
Настоящий международный стандарт устанавливает оригиналы символов, которые могут
масштабироваться для воспроизведения и применения.
Символы могут использоваться вместе с текстом для улучшения их понимания.

4 Общая часть
4.1 Размеры
Информационные символы для общественных мест, установленные в настоящем международном
стандарте, разрабатываются для воспроизведения в разных масштабах, соответствующих разным
применениям, например, начиная с мелкомасштабных предупреждений о направлении и кончая
крупномасштабными знаками, определяющими маршрут.
4.2 Текст
Графические символы были разработаны с тем, чтобы они могли использоваться сами по себе для
передачи информации, описанной в значении (за исключением стрелок направления, которые не могут
использоваться сами по себе, см. 4.3). Однако они могут объединяться с соответствующим текстом на
знаке или предупреждении, если это считается необходимым. Такое объединение с менее
распространенными символами помогает их пониманию.
4.3 Стрелки
Стрелка направления (номер символа PI PF 030) должна использоваться только вместе с другим
символом (или вместе с символом и текстом) для указания движения человека в направлении какого-
либо объекта. Соответствующий пример приводится на Рисунке 1.

Все другие стрелки демонстрируются вместе с соответствующим графическим символом и значением.
4.4 Цвет и контраст
Информационные символы для общественных мест, представленные в настоящем международном
стандарте, могут воспроизводиться в любом цвете. Однако для того, чтобы не путать
информационные символы для общественных мест с предупредительными знаками, необходимо
избегать использования комбинации цветов безопасности и форм, установленных в ISO 3864-1. Это
также относится к стрелкам, при изображении которых необходимо избегать использования зеленого и
белого цвета, чтобы не путать их со стрелкой направления, указывающей безопасное место и
используемой для указания маршрутов эвакуации.
Большое значение имеет соответствующий контраст между символом и его фоном, и для
идентифицируемости символа пространство, окружающее его, должно быть достаточно большим. Все
иллюстрации графических символов в настоящем международном стандарте имеют угловые метки,
определяющие требуемую минимальную площадь этого пространства.
4.5 Отрицание
Информационные символы для общественных мест должны содержать отрицание только для
комфорта или удобства.
Если всё действие запрещается, элемент отрицания должен иметь вид диагональной полоски,
начинающейся в верхнем левом углу и заканчивающейся в противоположном нижнем правом углу, как
показано на Рисунке 3. Для того чтобы не спутать этот знак с предупредительными знаками,
окружающая окружность должна отсутствовать. Знак отрицания должен размещаться над графическим
символом. Графический символ должен проектироваться так, чтобы при размещении его в образце,
установленном в 7.2 ISO 22727:2007, знак отрицания не загораживал важные детали.
Если только графический элемент символа в информационном символе для общественных мест несет
отрицание, указывающее на конкретное запрещенное действие, элемент отрицания должен иметь вид
креста, как показано на Рисунке 4. Крест отрицания должен размещаться над графическим элементом
символа, несущего отрицание.
Знак отрицания и крест отрицания обычно должны быть красного цвета.

5 Значения и категоризация информационных символов для общественных
мест
5.1 Общие положения
Сводные таблицы (Таблицы 1 и 2) приводятся для облегчения поиска стандартизированных
информационных символов для общественных мест.
Настоящий международный стандарт поддерживается электронными средствами путем
использования базы данных. В этих обзорах индексы этой базы данных используются как система
поиска каждого стандартизированного информационного символа для общественных мест, имеющего
ссылочный номер.
5.2 Значение
В Таблице 1 в алфавитном порядке представлены список значений, а также справочные номера.
5.3 Категоризация
Для удобства пользователей информационные символы для общественных мест в ISO 7001 были
распределены по группам в соответствии с местами, в которых они обычно используются. Однако
такое группирование не является единственным и использование информационных символов для
общественных мест в других местах, в которых оно считается соответствующим, не исключается.
Информационные символы для общественных мест распределяются по категориям следующим
образом:
PF объекты и коммуникации общественного пользования;
TF транспортные средства;
TC туризм, культура и наследие;
SA занятия спортом;
CF торговые предприятия;
BP поведение людей (исключая общественную безопасность).
В Таблице 2 приводятся стандартизированные информационные символы для общественных мест в
соответствии с указанной категоризацией.
Каждый информационный символ для общественных мест следует использовать для передачи только
одного информационного сообщения для общественности, и обычно ему присваивают только одну
категорию.

6 Стандартизированные информационные символы для общественных мест
В Таблицах с 3 по 8 представлены оригиналы символов одинакового размера 70 мм с угловыми
метками, обеспечивающими их масштабирование (увеличение и уменьшение). Примеры символов
приведены без границ с тем, чтобы учитывать соответствующее масштабирование при их
воспроизведении, хотя использование границ поддерживается. Символ следует воспроизводить точно,
как показано в Таблицах с 3 по 8. Однако разрешается вносить небольшие изменения в графику, если
необходимо учесть национальные и культурные различия или специальные форматы применений при
условии, что это не затрудняет понимание знаков. Согласующееся воспроизведение и использование

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Introduction
The reason for the publication of this International Standard is the increasing use of non-verbal presentation of
information in buildings and other places, and for services used by the public. Graphical symbols should be
used where text messages might be a barrier to understanding.
Continued growth in international trade, travel and tourism requires a common method of communication and
standardization of public information symbols will help both provider and users, including those with disabilities.
Lack of standardization may lead to confusion.
The use of standardized public information symbols does not replace the need for careful consideration and
application of wayfinding and signing schemes; it is recognized that pubic information symbols will often be
used with text in signing systems. This may aid education and comprehension particularly for new symbols
and those which have less common usage.
ISO 7001 is intended to be used by all Technical Committees within ISO charged with developing specific
public information symbols for their industry, to ensure that there is only one symbol for each meaning. It is
also intended that this International Standard be revised regularly to include public information symbols as
they are standardized by ISO and which conform to the principles for development as developed by
ISO/TC 145/SC 1.
Specific acceptance criteria, procedures and application forms can be found on the ISO/TC 145/SC 1 website,
http://www.iso.org/tc145/sc1.
The public information symbols in this International Standard have been validated by ISO/TC 145/SC 1
according to procedures of standardization current at the time of publication. Future standardization of public
information symbols will be facilitated with suitable evaluation techniques such as the testing outlined in
ISO 9186. Acceptance criteria for public information symbol qualification ought to be such that there is
confidence that a suitable proportion of the intended audience will understand them. Further design criteria will
be added as appropriate and will be approved by ISO/TC 145/SC 1.
Public information symbols given in this International Standard are considered to have achieved a satisfactory
degree of comprehension as established by independent testing or as a result of their use and application at
an international level.
NOTE The public information symbols given in this International Standard can be reproduced as published. However,
it is recognized that there may be particular national characteristics and cultural requirements which may require minor
variations. This is acceptable providing the key elements and design intent of the standardized symbol is not compromised.

Graphical symbols — Public information symbols
1 Scope
This International Standard specifies graphical symbols for the purposes of public information.
This International Standard is generally applicable to public information symbols in all locations and all sectors
where the public has access. However, it is not applicable to safety signs or to those sectors subject to a
regulation which may differ with regard to certain points of this International Standard (for example, traffic
signs on the public highway).
This International Standard specifies the symbol originals that may be scaled for reproduction and application
purposes.
The symbols may be used in conjunction with text to improve comprehension.
2 Normative references

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 17724 and the following apply.

visually perceptible figure with a particular meaning used to transmit information independently of language

public information symbol
graphical symbol intended to give information to the general public, the understanding of which is independent
of specialist or occupational training

by the addition of a graphical symbol, gives a particular safety message

4 General
4.1 Size
The public information symbols given in this International Standard are designed to be reproduced in a variety
of sizes to suit different applications from, for example, small-scale orientation notices to large-scale
wayfinding signs.
4.2 Text
The graphical symbols have been designed with the intention that they can be used on their own to convey
the information described in the meaning (except the direction arrow, which cannot be used on its own, see
4.3). However, they may be combined with the relevant text on a sign or notice, etc., if considered appropriate.
This might be an advantage with less well established symbols to aid understanding.
4.3 Arrows
The direction arrow (symbol number PI PF 030) shall only be used in conjunction with another symbol (or a
symbol and text) to indicate movement of a person towards something. An example is shown in Figure 1.

4.4 Colour and contrast
The public information symbols given in this International Standard may be reproduced in any colour.
However, the combination of safety colours and shapes specified in ISO 3864-1 shall be avoided to ensure
there is no confusion between public information symbols and safety signs. This also applies to arrows where
the use of green and white shall be avoided to ensure that there is no confusion with the direction arrow, safe
condition, used for evacuation routes.
Adequate contrast between the symbol and its background is essential and the symbol should be given a
sufficiently large surrounding area to ensure identifiability. All illustrations of graphical symbols in this
International Standard have corner marks to give an indication of the minimum area required.
4.5 Negation
Public information symbols shall be negated only for comfort or convenience reasons.
Where the whole activity is to be negated, the negation element shall be a diagonal bar running from top left to
bottom right as shown in Figure 3. In order to ensure that there is no confusion with safety signs, there shall
not be a surrounding circle. The negation bar shall be placed over the graphical symbol. The graphical symbol
shall be designed in such a way that when placed in the template specified in 7.2 of ISO 22727:2007 the
negation bar does not obscure critical details.
Where only a graphical symbol element in a public information symbol is to be negated to indicate a particular
forbidden action, the negation element shall be a cross as shown in Figure 4. The negation cross shall be
placed over the graphical symbol element which is being negated.
The negation bar and the negation cross should normally be red.

5 Meanings and categorization of public information symbols
5.1 General
The following summaries (Tables 1 and 2) are provided to facilitate the search for standardized public
information symbols.
This International Standard is to be maintained electronically through the use of a database. The indexes of
this database are to be used in these overviews as search engines with each standardized public information
symbol having a reference number.
5.2 Meaning
Table 1 gives the list of meanings in alphabetical order and provides the reference number.
5.3 Categorization
For the convenience of users, the public information symbols in ISO 7001 have been grouped according to the
areas where they are normally expected to be used. However, these groupings are not intended to be
exclusive and the use of the public information symbols in other areas, where this is considered appropriate, is
not precluded. The public information symbols are categorized as follows:
⎯ PF public facilities;
⎯ TF transport facilities;
⎯ TC tourism, culture and heritage;
⎯ SA sporting activities;
⎯ CF commercial facilities;
⎯ BP behaviour of the public (excluding public safety).
Table 2 summarizes the standardized public information symbols in terms of these categorizations.
Each public information symbol should normally be used to convey only one public information message, and
should normally be placed in one category only.

6 Standardized public information symbols
Tables 3 to 8 give symbol originals in a uniform 70 mm size with corner marks to enable accurate enlargement
and reduction scaling. The symbol illustrations are shown without borders in order to allow for consistent
reproduction scaling, though the use of borders is encouraged. The symbols should be reproduced exactly as
shown in Tables 3 to 8. However, some degree of graphical modification is permitted when national and
cultural differences or special application formats need to be considered, provided comprehension of the sign
is maintained. Consistent reproduction and use of these symbols will lead to a progressively improved degree
of comprehension at the international level.

Avant-propos
L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d'organismes nationaux de
normalisation (comités membres de l'ISO). L'élaboration des Normes internationales est en général confiée
aux comités techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire partie du
comité technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non
gouvernementales, en liaison avec l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec
la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique.
Les Normes internationales sont rédigées conformément aux règles données dans les Directives ISO/CEI,
Partie 2.
La tâche principale des comités techniques est d'élaborer les Normes internationales. Les projets de Normes
internationales adoptés par les comités techniques sont soumis aux comités membres pour vote. Leur
publication comme Normes internationales requiert l'approbation de 75 % au moins des comités membres
votants.

révision technique. Elle incorpore également l’amendement ISO 7001:1990/Amd.1:1993.

Introduction
La publication de la présente Norme internationale tire sa justification du fait que l’on voit de plus en plus,
dans les bâtiments et autres lieux et services ouverts au public, des informations données sous une forme qui
ne recourt plus au texte. Il convient d’utiliser des symboles graphiques là où le recours au texte risque de
constituer un obstacle à la compréhension du message.
Le développement continu du commerce international, des transports et du tourisme rend indispensable
l’instauration d’une méthode commune de communication; la normalisation des symboles destinés à
l’information du public sera utile tant aux fournisseurs d’informations qu’aux utilisateurs, y compris les
personnes handicapées.
Le manque de normalisation peut être source de confusion.
L’utilisation de symboles normalisés destinés à l’information du public ne dispense en aucun cas de mettre au
point de manière attentive des systèmes de signalisation et d’orientation; il est reconnu que les symboles
destinés à l’information du public sont souvent associés à du texte. L’utilisation de symboles normalisés peut
faciliter la compréhension, en particulier lorsqu’il s’agit de symboles nouveaux ou peu utilisés.
L’ISO 7001 est destinée à être utilisée par tous les comités techniques de l’ISO chargés d’élaborer des
symboles destinés à l’information du public spécifiques à leur secteur d’activité, afin de garantir qu’à chaque
signification ne correspond qu’un seul symbole. Il est également prévu de réviser régulièrement la présente
Norme internationale pour y inclure les symboles destinés à l’information du public normalisés au sein de
l’ISO et qui sont conformes aux principes d’élaboration mis en œuvre par l’ISO/TC 145/SC 1.
Les critères d’acceptation spécifiques, modes opératoires et formulaires de demande se trouvent sur le site

Les symboles destinés à l’information du public contenus dans la présente Norme internationale ont été
validés par l’ISO/TC 145/SC 1 conformément aux procédures de normalisation applicables au moment de la
publication. Dans l’avenir, la normalisation des symboles destinés à l’information du public peut être facilitée
par l’application de techniques d’évaluation appropriées, comme celle décrite dans l’ISO 9186. Il convient que
les critères d’acceptation pour la qualification des symboles destinés à l’information du public soient choisis en
ayant la garantie que les signaux soient compris par une proportion appropriée du public visé. D’autres
critères de conception seront ajoutés, le cas échéant, et seront approuvés par l’ISO/TC 145/SC 1.
Les symboles destinés à l’information du public contenus dans la présente Norme internationale sont
considérés comme ayant obtenu un degré satisfaisant de compréhension, attestée par des essais
indépendants ou comme résultat de leur utilisation et de leur application au niveau international.
NOTE Les symboles destinés à l’information du public présentés dans la présente Norme internationale peuvent être
reproduits tels quels. Cependant, ils sont susceptibles de faire l’objet de variations mineures en raison de particularités
nationales ou culturelles. Cela est acceptable tant que les éléments-clés et le modèle de conception du symbole

1 Domaine d'application
La présente Norme internationale spécifie les symboles graphiques destinés à l’information du public.
La présente Norme internationale est généralement applicable aux symboles destinés à l’information du
public installés dans tous les lieux et secteurs d’accès public. Cependant, elle n’est pas applicable aux
signaux de sécurité ou aux secteurs soumis à une réglementation qui peut être différente pour ce qui
concerne certains points de la présente Norme internationale (par exemple les panneaux de signalisation sur
la voie publique).
La présente Norme internationale spécifie les originaux de symboles qui peuvent être dessinés à l’échelle,
aux fins de reproduction et d’application.
Les symboles peuvent être associés à du texte, pour une meilleure compréhension.

4 Généralités
4.1 Dimensions
Les symboles destinés à l’information du public contenus dans la présente Norme internationale sont conçus
pour être reproduits à différentes dimensions en fonction des applications, selon qu’il s’agit, par exemple,
d’indications d’orientation à échelle réduite ou de signaux à grande échelle.
4.2 Texte
Les symboles graphiques ont été conçus pour transmettre par eux-mêmes l’information dont ils sont porteurs
(à l’exception de la flèche de direction, qui ne se suffit pas à elle-même, voir 4.3). Cependant, ils peuvent, le
cas échéant, être combinés avec un texte pertinent, par exemple sur un signal ou une indication. Cela peut
avoir l’avantage de faciliter la compréhension dans le cas de symboles moins courants.
4.3 Flèches
La flèche de direction (symbole PI PF 030) ne doit pas être utilisée seule, mais uniquement associée à un
autre symbole (ou à un symbole et un texte) pour indiquer un mouvement vers un objet. Un exemple est
représenté à la Figure 1.

Toutes les autres flèches s’utilisent avec un symbole graphique et la signification correspondante.
4.4 Couleur et contraste
Les symboles destinés à l’information du public contenus dans la présente Norme internationale peuvent être
reproduits dans une couleur quelconque. Cependant, la combinaison des formes et couleurs de sécurité
spécifiées dans l’ISO 3864-1 doit être évitée pour parer à tout risque de confusion entre les symboles
destinés à l’information du public et les signaux de sécurité. Cela s’applique également aux flèches pour
lesquelles l’utilisation du vert et blanc doit être évitée pour parer à tout risque de confusion avec les flèches de
direction, conditions de sécurité, utilisées pour les cheminements d’évacuation.
Il est essentiel qu’il y ait un contraste suffisant entre le symbole et son arrière-plan, et il convient de prévoir un
espace suffisant autour du symbole pour assurer une bonne lisibilité. Toutes les illustrations de symboles
graphiques figurant dans la présente Norme internationale montrent des repères d’angles pour indiquer
l’espace minimal requis.
4.5 Négation
Les symboles destinés à l’information du public ne doivent être assortis d’une négation que pour des raisons
de confort ou de commodité.
Si la totalité de l’activité doit faire l’objet d’une négation, l’élément de négation doit être un trait barrant le
symbole selon une diagonale descendant de gauche à droite, comme illustré à la Figure 3. Pour éviter toute
confusion avec des signaux de sécurité, il ne doit pas y avoir de cercle autour. Le trait de négation doit passer
par-dessus le symbole graphique. Le symbole graphique doit être conçu de sorte que, dans le modèle
spécifié au paragraphe 7.2 de l’ISO 22727:2007, le trait de négation n’interfère pas avec l’identification
d’éléments essentiels du symbole graphique.
Lorsque seul un élément d’un symbole graphique destiné à l’information du public doit faire l’objet d’une
négation pour indiquer l’interdiction d’une action particulière, l’élément de négation doit être une croix, comme
illustré à la Figure 4. La croix de négation doit passer par-dessus l’élément de symbole graphique faisant
l’objet de la négation.
Normalement, il convient que le trait et la croix de négation soient rouges.

5 Significations et classification par catégories des symboles destinés à
l’information du public
5.1 Généralités
Les résumés de symboles suivants (Tableaux 1 et 2) sont destinés à faciliter la recherche de symboles
normalisés destinés à l’information du public.
La maintenance de la présente Norme internationale sera réalisée sous forme électronique par l’utilisation
d’une base de données. Les index numériques de cette base de données seront utilisés dans ce résumé
comme moteurs de recherche, chaque symbole normalisé destiné à l’information du public ne correspondant
qu’à un numéro de référence unique.
5.2 Signification
Le Tableau 1 donne la liste des significations dans l’ordre alphabétique, ainsi que le numéro de référence
correspondant.
5.3 Classification par catégories
Pour aider l'utilisateur, les symboles destinés à l’information du public de l’ISO 7001 ont été regroupés en
fonction des zones où ils sont normalement appelés à se trouver. Cependant, ces regroupements ne
constituent pas une règle et l’utilisation des symboles destinés à l’information du public dans d’autres zones,
considérées comme appropriées, n’est pas interdite. Les symboles destinés à l’information du public sont
classés selon leur catégorie comme suit:
⎯ PF est la catégorie des symboles pour les installations publiques;
⎯ TF est la catégorie des symboles pour les moyens de transport;
⎯ TC est la catégorie des symboles pour le secteur du tourisme, de la culture et du patrimoine;
⎯ SA est la catégorie des symboles pour les activités sportives;
⎯ CF est la catégorie des symboles pour les établissements commerciaux;
⎯ BP est la catégorie des symboles pour le comportement du public (à l’exclusion de la sécurité du
public).
Le Tableau 2 résume les symboles destinés à l’information du public normalisés en termes de catégorie.
Normalement, il est recommandé que chaque symbole destiné à l’information du public soit utilisé pour
transmettre un message unique, et appartienne à une catégorie unique.

6 Symboles normalisés destinés à l’information du public
Les Tableaux 3 à 8 présentent les symboles originaux dans une dimension uniforme de 70 mm avec les
repères d’angles de façon à permettre un agrandissement précis ou une réduction précise à l’échelle. Bien
que l’utilisation des liserés soit encouragée, les illustrations des symboles sont présentées sans liseré de

comme représentés dans les Tableaux 3 à 8. Cependant, et dans la mesure où la compréhension du signal
est conservée, il est possible de tolérer un certain degré de liberté afin d’intégrer d’éventuelles modifications
graphiques lorsqu’il est nécessaire de prendre en compte les différences nationales ou culturelles ou les types
d’utilisation spéciale. Une reproduction et une utilisation cohérentes de ces symboles permettront d’améliorer
progressivement le niveau de compréhension au niveau international.
Les Tableaux 3 à 8 présentent les symboles destinés à l'information du public originaux selon leur catégorie,
comme suit:

⎯ BP Comportement du public (à l’exclusion de la sécurité du public) voir le Tableau 8
Les Tableaux 3 à 8 donnent également la signification, la fonction et le contenu graphique de chaque symbole.
Si l’orientation du symbole n’est pas essentielle à sa compréhension, elle pourra être modifiée.
Il convient qu’un symbole graphique soit dessiné sous forme d’un contour rempli.
