This European Standard covers all significant hazards as identified by risk assessment (see EN 1050), which are listed in clause 4 of this standard, relevant to centrifuges for processing edible oils and fats, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturer. It specifies safety and hygiene requirements for the design, manufacture, use, maintenance and cleaning of centrifugal machines. The normal operating methods are described in 3.2. This standard does not apply to machines using solvent extraction and ancillary machines (e.g. conveyors, hoppers, etc.). It is not applicable to basket centrifuges. This European Standard is applicable primarily to machines which are manufactured after the date of approval by CEN.

Diese Europäische Norm behandelt alle signifikanten Gefährdungen, die durch Risikobeurteilung (siehe EN 1050) ermittelt und in Abschnitt 4 dieser Europäischen Norm aufgeführt werden, die sich bei Zentrifugen zur Verarbeitung von essbaren Ölen und Fetten ergeben, wenn diese bestimmungsgemäß und unter den vom Hersteller vorgesehenen Bedingungen verwendet werden.

Diese Norm gilt nicht für Maschinen, bei denen Extraktion durch Lösungsmittel erfolgt und Zusatzeinrichtungen ( z. B. Förderbänder, Trichter usw.) zum Einsatz kommen.
Sie gilt nicht für Korbzentrifugen.

The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazard, hazardous situation and hazardous event are covered are indicated in the scope of this document. When provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B standards, the provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other standards, for machines that have been designed and built according to the provisions of this C standard. This European Standard is independent of EN 12547 because it deals specifically with the requirements of the processing of edible oils and fats. EN 12505:2000+A1:2009 (E) 6 and Amendment 1:1989 and Amendment 2:1993 3 Definitions and descriptions For the purposes of this Standard, the definitions given in !EN ISO 12100-1:2003" apply and also the following. 3.1 extraction and separation two methods of centrifugation, carried out by two different centrifugal machines:
respectively decanter and disc stack centrifuges. 3.2 centrifugal machine it is used for the extraction and separation of edible oils and fats in which, by means of centrifugal force, the incoming product ("feed") is separated into the different liquid and solid phases. 3.2.1 decanter centrifuge it is used to extract the solid phase from the liquid (oil or oil and water) phase (see Figure 1) The feed enters the machine through a fixed pipe (1) and is distributed on the internal surface of the bowl (2), by centrifugal force. The scroll (3), which rotates at a slightly different speed from the bowl, conveys the solid residue to the outlet holes (4). The scraper (5), driven by an electric motor (6) removes the solid residue from the walls of the housing (7).
The normal operating method of this centrifuge is of the continuous feeding and discharging of the processed products. The liquids pass out from the bowl through special weir holes: for oil phase (8) and for water phase (9). An electric motor (10) drives the bowl by a transmission device (11) (e.g.: pulleys, belts and hydraulic clutch). The scroll is rotated by means of a scroll driving device (12) (e.g.: pulleys, belts and gear box). 3.2.2 disc stack centrifuge centrifugal machine with vertical axis. It is used to separate oil from water and small quantity of residual solid (see Figures 2 and 3). The feed enters the machine through a fixed vertical pipe (1). Inside the bowl, under the effect of the centrifugal force, the feed is separated into three layers: residual solid (2), water (3), and oil (4). The feed passes through the discs (5). The liquids pass out from the bowl through weir rings: for oil (6) and for water (7). Oil and water are collected under a fixed bowl cover (8) which acts as a support for the feed pipe (1), and for oil (9) and water (10) outlet pipes. The normal operating method of this centrifuge is of the continuous feeding and discharging of the processed liquid products.
On the self-cleaning disc stack centrifuge (see Figure 2) the residual solid can be discharged by a hydraulic discharging device (11) which permits its ejection, by centrifugal force, whilst the machine is operating. On the manual disc stack centrifuge (see Figure 3) the residual solid can be discharged only when the machine is at rest and after the bowl has been opened. The electric motor (12) drives the bowl by a transmission device (13) (e.g.: a mechanical clutch and gears). SIST EN 12505:2002+A1:2010

operating speed: It is the working speed of the machine and is dependent on the specific application. 4 List of significant hazards
This clause contains all hazards identified by risk assessment as being specific and significant for centrifugal machines used for processing edible oils and fats and which require measures to reduce risk. 4.1 Mechanical hazards
The significant hazards are:  crushing;
 shearing;
 entanglement;

Zone 5  bowl.
Entanglement; abrasion; ejection of machine parts which may be caused by: incorrect electrical supply (which may bring about a change in the direction of rotation or by the use of the wrong frequency); incorrect electrical connections to the electric motor. Ejection of processed product.
Zone 6  end of the bowl, liquid outlet side. Abrasion; ejection of processed product. Zone 7  end of the bowl, residual solid discharge side. Shearing; ejection of processed product. Zone 8  feed pipe. Entanglement through possible rotation of the feed pipe. This hazard is a consequence of indirect friction between rotating parts and this feed pipe by way of the material being processed inside the bowl. Figure 5 — Disc stack centrifuge - Mechanical hazard zones (informative) 4.1.3 Unexpected start-up Unexpected start-up or failure of controls may cause hazards with the consequences listed in 4.1.1 and 4.1.2. 4.1.4 Loss of stability Loss of stability may occur if the machine is not securely anchored to a suitable base, or by incorrect removal and lifting of any part of the centrifugal machine. Loss of stability may also occur due to an improperly balanced bowl or to a bowl that becomes unbalanced owing to a build-up of material or having been incorrectly repaired or re-assembled after maintenance.
4.2 Electrical hazard caused by electrical contact (direct or indirect) This hazard may cause injury or death from electric shock or burns caused by a lack of insulation, or by direct contact with live electrical contacts, or by contact with exposed conductive parts which are made live by a fault and which may result in electric shock. 4.3 Hazard generated by noise, resulting in hearing losses or other physiological disorders The sources of noise are the electrical motors, the driving devices, the bowl and other moving parts. 4.4 Hygiene The lack of hygiene can create risks for human health and unacceptable modification of foodstuffs by contamination by microbial organisms or other foreign substances. 4.4.1 Chemical Chemical agents incompletely rinsed out of the machine. EN 12505:2000+A1:2009 (E) 14 4.4.2 Foreign material The major hazard arises from the machinery. Metal shavings could be produced or pieces of machinery break off. 4.4.3 Vermin and Insects
These may gain access to the interior of the machinery and contaminate the product. 4.5 Hazards generated by neglecting ergonomic principles They are generated by unhealthy postures or excessive efforts during essential operations such as assembly and disassembly of machine parts, cleaning and maintenance, lifting and handling of heavy components. 5 Safety requirements and/or measures
Machinery shall comply with the safety requirements and/or measures of this clause. In addition, the centrifuges shall be designed according to the principles of !EN ISO 12100" for hazards relevant but not significant which are dealt with by this standard. 5.1 Mechanical hazards The hazard of ejection of machine parts relates to most of the hazard zones and it is a consequence of the high rotational speed of the bowl. Given the high rotational speeds and energies involved it is not practical to build a guard that would contain the bowl parts. However the ejection of machine parts risk shall be reduced to an acceptable level by avoiding failure of rotating parts, according to the following requirements and/or measures:  stress and deformation calculations of the rotating parts shall be performed. One method is shown in Annex C.  the machine shall be able to comply with a type-test of overspeed running (see clause 6);  if the drive mechanism is capable of driving the centrifuge at a speed greater than its maximum permissible speed, then it shall have an overspeed indicator which shall give visual and audible warning that the limit has been exceeded.
An overspeed prevention device shall be provided to either prevent the centrifuge from exceeding the maximum permitted speed or to isolate power to the drive mechanism.
All the centrifuges used for processing edible oils and fats shall be provided with an indicator giving visual and audible warning of excessive vibration. An excess vibration device shall isolate power to the drive mechanism.

EN 12505:2000+A1:2009 (E) 15 5.1.1 Decanter centrifuge (see Figure 4) 5.1.1.1 Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9 !Access to these zones, relating to driving mechanisms and other rotating parts, shall be prevented by fixed guards in compliance with EN 953:1997. Opening in such guards shall comply with Table 4 of EN 294:1992. Guards with openings are not appropriate for zones 4, 5 and 6. Fixing systems of the fixed guards shall remain attached to these parts or to the machine when the parts are removed." 5.1.1.2 Zone 7 !The access to the moving parts in this zone shall be prevented by a fixed guard in accordance with EN 953:1997. The guard shall enable the discharge of the residual solids. The means for evacuation and/or storage of the discharge solids (e. g. screw or belt conveyor) may form part of the guard. If in this case the means for evacuation or storage are not supplied with the machine, the manufacturer shall give information about the installation of these means in the instruction handbook. Fixing systems of the fixed guards shall remain attached to these parts or to the machine when the parts are removed." 5.1.1.3 Zone 8 The feed pipe shall be securely fixed to a rigid support on the machine frame. 5.1.2 Disc stack centrifuge (see Figure 5) 5.1.2.1 Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 !Access to these zones, relating to driving mechanisms and other rotating parts, shall be prevented by fixed guards in compliance with EN 953:1997. Opening in such guards shall comply with Table 4 of EN 294:1992. Guards with openings are not appropriate for zones 1 and 3. Fixing systems of the fixed guards shall remain attached to these parts or to the machine when the parts are removed." 5.1.3 Unexpected start-up The main isolating shall be provided with means of preventing unexpected start-up in accordance with EN 1037: 1995 (see clause 6). 5.1.4 Loss of stability
To avoid a loss of stability the following requirements and/or measures shall be satisfied:  correct balancing of the rotor according to !ISO 1940-1:2003";  !if a mechanical braking device" is provided, its activation shall cut off the electric power to the motor before applying the
braking effect. When the brake action on the bowl involves the driving parts (e.g. pulleys and belts or gears), the maximum applied braking deceleration shall be lower than or equal to the maximum start-up acceleration. The manufacturer shall specify, to ensure stability:  requirements for securing the machine to its foundation, and provide those means; SIST EN 12505:2002+A1:2010



EN 12505:2000+A1:2009 (E) 16  the method of moving and lifting the centrifuge and other main parts of centrifuge and shall provide any necessary attachment points. Instructions shall be provided in the Information for use, see clause 7.
5.2 Electrical hazard Unless stated otherwise, all electrical equipment shall comply with !EN 60204-1:2006". All electrical connections shall be in accordance with the instructions for use.
5.2.1 Electromagnetic compatibility (see 4.4.2 of !!!!EN 60204-1:2006"""") Where electrical components are to be used, the manufacturer shall obtain from the supplier of these components, confirmation that they are suitable for the use under the intended operating conditions of the machine. The manufacturer shall not install electrical components that do not meet the above requirement. 5.2.2 IP Degree The protection level is stipulated by the IPs. Electric motors, control devices and indicators shall have as a minimum degree of protection that stipulated by IP 55 (see EN 60529). 5.2.3 Emergency stop (see 9.2.5.4 of !!!!EN 60204-1:2006"""" and EN 418: 1992) Emergency stop of !category 0 or 1 shall be" located at the point from where the machine is clearly visible. 5.2.4 Safety related parts of the control system !The safety related parts of the control system shall present a performance level defined in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1:2008 with a minimum of level “d”. NOTE A lower performance level may be acceptable in some cases, if based on a specific risk assessment." 5.3 Hazard generated by noise 5.3.1 Noise reduction
Centrifugal machines shall be so designed and constructed that risks from emission of airborne noise are reduced to the lowest level by particularly applying measures at source to control noise (ref. EN ISO 11688-1). 5.3.2 Noise emission measurement, declaration procedure The measurements, declaration and verification of noise emission values shall be made in accordance with the relevant noise test code in Annex A. 5.4 Hygiene requirements The hazards presented in 4.4 shall be minimised by ensuring that the centrifugal machine is properly designed, manufactured and installed so as to facilitate through cleaning and routine maintenance. Edible oils and fats do not provide a suitable medium for the growth of micro-organisms. They can be a vector for contamination, but would need a high initial inoculation. EN 12505:2000+A1:2009 (E) 17 Centrifugal machine shall be designed and manufactured in accordance with !EN 1672-2:2005" and Annex B. For the machines included in this Standard, the food, splash and non-food areas, defined in EN 1672-2: 1997, are those listed in 5.4.1, 5.4.2 and 5.4.3 (see figure 6 and figure 7). Only such materials and coatings shall be used that neither contribute to the contamination of food nor have any adverse influence on human health. The surface of materials and coatings shall be durable, cleanable and if necessary disinfectable, without breaks and shall be resistant to cracking, chipping, flaking and abrasion under normal condition of use (see B.3.1 and B.3.2).
Materials shall withstand wear and prevent entering of vermin. The materials shall be resistant to detergent products and means of cleaning as recommended by the manufacturer. On food area the following material requirements are to be added:  non-absorbent;  corrosion resistant;  non-toxic;  not transfer undesirable odours, colours or taint to the food;  not contribute either to the contamination of food or have any adverse influence on the food. 5.4.1 Food area The food contact areas are as follows: 5.4.1.1 Decanter centrifuge (see Figure 6)  the feed pipe, 1;  the inside of the bowl, 2;  the scroll, 3;  the external end of the bowl (liquid outlet side), 4;  the inside of the housing liquid area, 5;  the inside of oil and water outlet pipes, 6.
