The SIST EN 12268:2015 standard provides a comprehensive framework for the safety and hygiene requirements specifically for band saw machines used in food processing. Its meticulously defined scope encompasses a wide variety of applications, which includes cutting of bones, fresh or deep-frozen meat (with or without bones), fresh or deep-frozen fish, and various other food products like vegetables and deep-frozen block food products. By explicitly excluding band saw machines designed for wood processing or domestic use, the standard maintains a clear focus on industrial food processing applications, thereby ensuring its relevance to manufacturers and users within the food industry. One of the key strengths of this standard lies in its thorough approach to addressing all significant hazards associated with band saw machines. The standard effectively identifies potential safety issues that may arise during the entire lifecycle of the machines, from transport and assembly to operation, maintenance, and eventual decommissioning. This holistic view ensures that manufacturers are guided in creating machinery that not only meets regulatory requirements but also prioritizes user safety and hygiene. Furthermore, the clearly outlined machine types, ranging from table-top designs to floor-type setups, inform manufacturers of the specific requirements corresponding to different models. This specificity facilitates better design and compliance, enhancing the overall safety and functionality of band saw machines. By accommodating machines with varying cutting heights and operational features while ensuring that automatic loading/unloading systems are outside its purview, the standard recognizes the diversity of operational settings within the food processing sector. Overall, the SIST EN 12268:2015 standard stands as an essential guideline that balances safety requirements with practical application needs, reinforcing its critical relevance within the food processing machinery industry. Its in-depth hazard assessment and inclusive design requirements position it as a foundational document for manufacturers aiming to deliver safe and compliant band saw machines to the market.
