Thermoplastics piping systems for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage - Thermoplastics fittings - Test method for impact strength (ISO 13263:2010)

ISO 13263:2010 specifies a method for testing the impact resistance of fittings by dropping them on to a rigid surface. For a fitting with seal-retaining components, such as seal-retaining caps or rings, the method includes assessment of the watertightness of the fittings when the fixing elements show disturbance as a result of the test.
It is applicable to fittings made from thermoplastics materials intended to be used for buried and above-ground applications.

Overview

EN ISO 13263:2017 - Thermoplastics piping systems for non‑pressure underground drainage and sewerage - specifies a standardized test method for impact strength of thermoplastics fittings (ISO 13263:2010 adopted by CEN). The method evaluates a fitting’s resistance to impact by dropping a conditioned, complete fitting onto a rigid test base and inspecting for through‑wall cracks and loss of watertightness of seal‑retaining components.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to thermoplastics fittings intended for buried and above‑ground non‑pressure drainage and sewerage systems.
  • Test principle: Drop the complete fitting (including sealing and fixing elements) from a specified height onto a rigid surface and inspect for damage.
  • Conditioning: Test pieces are conditioned at the specified test temperature in a refrigerator, liquid bath or temperature‑controlled environment. Minimum conditioning periods increase with wall thickness:
    • e < 3 mm → 1 hour
    • 3 ≤ e < 8 mm → 3 hours
    • 8 ≤ e < 16 mm → 6 hours
    • e ≥ 16 mm → 16 hours
  • Apparatus:
    • Temperature control capable of ±2 °C.
    • Test base: concrete or stone floor at least 100 mm thick, or a slab at least 100 mm thick with mass ≥ 20× test piece; surface must be rigid, flat, smooth and horizontal.
  • Sampling and numbers: Unless the referring standard specifies otherwise, use five test pieces for sizes up to and including 200 mm and three for sizes greater than 200 mm.
  • Inspection criteria:
    • Record cracks or splits visible without magnification (disregard superficial scratches/chipping).
    • For fittings with seal‑retaining elements, assess permanent damage that could impair watertightness.
  • Pass/fail expression:
    • “No damage” if no through‑wall cracks and any displaced fixing element can be manually restored to provide a watertight joint.
    • “Damage” if through‑wall cracks occur or fixing elements cannot be restored to achieve watertightness.
  • Test report: Must reference the standard, identify the fitting, test temperature, drop height and impact point, results for each sample, any influencing factors and the test date.

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers and designers of thermoplastic fittings use EN ISO 13263:2017 to validate product impact performance for drainage and sewerage systems.
  • Independent testing laboratories use the method to provide certification data and conformity evidence.
  • Specifiers, installers and infrastructure owners refer to the standard to select fittings with proven resistance to handling and installation impacts.
  • Regulators and conformity assessment bodies rely on the method when setting acceptance criteria for buried non‑pressure systems.

Related standards

  • ISO 13263:2010 (original international text) - adopted as EN ISO 13263:2017.
  • Supersedes EN 12061:1999 (previous European standard for the same subject)
