Overview
prEN IEC 60794-1-103:2025 specifies a uniform crush test (Method E3) for optical fibre cables. Part of the IEC 60794 series, this document defines apparatus, procedures and reporting requirements to assess the ability of optical fibre cables (including hybrid cable constructions) to withstand short‑term and long‑term crushing loads. It replaces the Method E3 content previously in IEC 60794-1-21 and references general test guidance in IEC 60794-1-2. Note: the CDV stage indicates the text may be subject to change.
Key topics and requirements
- Purpose: Determine cable resistance to crushing loads and effects on optical performance (attenuation, continuity).
- Test variants:
- Method E3A - plate/plate: cable crushed between a fixed steel base plate and a movable steel plate that applies force uniformly over a 100 mm flat length (total plate ≈110 mm; edge radius ≈5 mm).
- Method E3B - mandrel/plate: same arrangement but with a steel mandrel (default diameter 25 mm) inserted perpendicular to the cable or replacing the movable plate.
- Apparatus details: flat plate dimensions, rounded edges (5 mm radius), and 25 mm mandrel diameter are specified as default values unless the relevant specification states otherwise.
- Procedure highlights:
- Mount cable to prevent lateral movement; measure initial attenuation before loading.
- Apply force gradually (if incremental, step ratio ≤ 1.5:1).
- Maintain specified force for the test duration - typically 1 minute (short‑term) or 10 minutes (long‑term) unless otherwise specified.
- Perform attenuation measurement before release.
- Default test repetition: three crushes at different locations, ≥500 mm apart and not equal to the cable core lay length or its integer multiples.
- Acceptance criteria: Defined in the relevant product specification. Typical criteria include maximum allowable change in attenuation (during and after test), optical continuity, and absence of physical damage (superficial imprints/scratches are not considered damage).
Applications and users
- Who uses it: cable manufacturers, independent test laboratories, telecom operators, procurement teams, R&D and qualification engineers, and standards bodies.
- Practical uses:
- Design validation and mechanical qualification of optical fibre cables.
- Production quality control and supplier acceptance testing.
- Comparative evaluation of cable constructions for deployment environments where crushing risk exists (ducts, handling, storage).
- Contractual test requirements and compliance evidence for telecommunication installations.

30 FOREWORD
31 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
32 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
33 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
34 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
35 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
36 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
37 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
38 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
39 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
40 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
41 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
42 interested IEC National Committees.
43 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
44 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
45 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
46 misinterpretation by any end user.
47 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
48 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
49 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
50 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
51 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
52 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
53 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
54 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
55 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
56 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
57 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
58 Publications.
59 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
60 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
61 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
62 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
