Coil coated metals - Test methods - Part 17: Adhesion of strippable films

This part of the EN 13523 series specifies two methods for determining the numerical evaluation of the adhesion of strippable films which have previously been applied to an organic coating on a metallic substrate.
Samples can be tested irrespective of whether the strippable film has been applied in the laboratory or on the production line.
NOTE   Method 1 is preferred for films with adhesive and method 2 for films without adhesive.

Overview

SIST EN 13523-17:2019 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies standardized test methods for evaluating the adhesion of strippable films applied to organic coatings on metallic substrates. As part of the broader EN 13523 series on coil coated metals, this standard addresses the numerical assessment of how well strippable protective films adhere to coated metal surfaces.

Strippable films are temporary plastic protection layers used to protect coil coated metals from mechanical damage during handling and transport. Ensuring proper adhesion without damaging the coating is crucial for maintaining quality and performance. SIST EN 13523-17:2019 provides two test methods tailored to films with adhesives and non-adhesive films, allowing consistent and reproducible evaluation regardless of whether the films are applied in laboratory conditions or on production lines.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Coverage

    • Test methods for measuring adhesion force between strippable films and organic coatings on metallic substrates.
    • Applicable for both self-adhesive and non-adhesive strippable films.
    • Suitable for samples from laboratory or industrial production environments.
  • Test Methods

    • Method 1 (preferred for adhesive films): Uses a hydraulic or electronic dynamometer to peel the film at a controlled speed and angle, measuring the force needed.
    • Method 2 (preferred for non-adhesive films): Employs a spring balance to determine peel force by manually lifting film strips.
  • Sample Preparation

    • Compliance with EN 13523-0 for panel and sampling conditions.
    • Details on correct film application with emphasis on environmental controls (temperature, humidity) and pressure rolling to avoid defects.
    • Special handling instructions for heating and cooling substrates in non-adhesive film application.
  • Evaluation and Results

    • Adhesion expressed as force per unit width of film strip (Newtons per millimeter).
    • Use of multiple measurements with statistical treatment (discarding highest and lowest values).
    • Requirements for comprehensive test reporting including film type, method used, and any deviations.

Applications

SIST EN 13523-17:2019 is essential for industries using coil coated metals, including:

  • Metal Coil Manufacturers: To verify protective film adhesion ensuring damage-free handling during transportation and processing.
  • Coating Facilities: Quality control of film application on pre-coated metal surfaces to maintain coating integrity.
  • Automotive and Construction: Assessment of protection foils on metal parts before final assembly or installation.
  • Testing Laboratories: Standardized procedures to certify product compliance and settle disputes related to film adhesion.
  • Material Suppliers: Optimization of film formulations and substrate pretreatments based on adhesion performance data.

By implementing this standard, stakeholders can reduce coating damage, improve product reliability, and streamline production quality assurance.

Related Standards

SIST EN 13523-17:2019 is part of the comprehensive EN 13523 series addressing various properties of coil coated metals. Relevant associated standards include:

  • EN 13523-0: General introduction to coil coated metal test methods.
  • EN 13523-1 to EN 13523-29: Covers tests for film thickness, gloss, color difference, hardness, adhesion after deformation, corrosion resistance, abrasion, resistance to aging, and more.
  • EN 23270: Specifies temperature and humidity conditions for conditioning and testing paints and varnishes.
  • EN 1396: Aluminum coil coated sheet specifications.
  • EN 10169: Technical delivery conditions for coil coated steel flat products.

Together, these standards enable manufacturers and users to comprehensively evaluate coil coated metal products, ensuring durability, aesthetic properties, and protective functions meet stringent industry requirements.
