Surface active agents - Bio-based surfactants - Requirements and test methods

EN 17035:2021

Chemical companies sometimes use bio-based surfactants in their products. Therefore, it is necessary to subject these chemicals to a thorough study, namely to check the level of their effectiveness. Despite the fact that these ingredients can be widely used in production, it is important to regularly monitor their safety, both for the human body and for the environment. All testing requirements for surfactants are governed by an international standard such as EN 17035:2021.

This document sets requirements for bio-based surfactants in terms of properties, limits, application classes and test methods. It lays down the characteristics and details for assessment of bio-based surfactants as to whether they:


- are fit for purpose in terms of performance related properties;


- comply with the requirements regarding the health, safety and environment which apply to general surfactants;


- are derived from a certain minimum percentage of biomass;


- comply with at least similar sustainability criteria as comparable (non-bio-based) surfactants.
The criteria of the regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) [13] also apply to bio-based surfactants.

EN 16575 defines the term "bio-based" as derived from biomass and clarifies that "bio-based" does not imply "biodegradable". In addition, "biodegradable" does not necessarily imply the use of "bio-based" material.

Given the information that is provided in this International Standard, it becomes apparent how important it is to pay sufficient attention to the evaluation of the effectiveness of biobased surfactants used in production. Despite the biological origin of these substances, this does not guarantee their biodegradability, which is also worth considering. Sewerage applications are outside the scope of this document.
