If applicable, a relay in the new condition shall be subjected to the following preconditioning,
unless other procedures and values are specified:
The preconditioning comprises the tests "dry heat" according to IEC 60068-2-2 and "damp heat"
according to IEC 60068-2-67.
The test dry heat is carried out in a heat chamber. The air temperature is maintained at 55 °C
with an accuracy of ±2 K in the area where the DUTs are mounted. The DUTs are kept in the
chamber for 48 h.
The test damp heat is carried out in a climatic test cabinet at a relative humidity between 91 %
and 95 %. The air temperature shall be maintained at 25 °C with an accuracy of ±5 K in the
area where the DUTs are mounted. The DUTs are kept in the chamber for 48 h. There shall be
no condensation.
4.2.2 Dielectric strength test
The dielectric strength shall be started immediately after the preconditioning and finished
without unnecessary delay. The test voltage specified for a circuit shall be applied to the
respective relay terminals. The AC test voltage shall be of sinusoidal waveform having a
frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz and may be substituted by a DC test voltage of a value equal to
the peak value of the AC test voltage. Unless otherwise specified, the test voltage is applied
for 1 min across the insulation or disconnection.
An application time of 1 s is permissible, provided the test voltage value is increased to 110 %
of the rated value. For even shorter periods, the manufacturer shall evaluate an appropriate
value ensuring the same level of dielectric withstand capability. No flashover or breakdown shall
occur. A current of not more than 3 mA is permitted.
Special components which might render the test impractical such as light emitting diodes, free-
wheeling diodes, varistors, are disconnected at one pole, or bridged, or removed, as appropriate
to the insulation being tested.
Dielectric strength test equipment and voltage shall be in line with Annex A.
The test procedure shall be carried out at reference ambient conditions according to
IEC 63522-0:–, Table 2.
4.3 Conditions to be specified
The conditions to be specified are the following:
a) terminals to which the test voltage shall be applied, selected from the following:
• terminals of each contact circuit; break contacts shall be opened for this test,
• all terminals requiring the same test voltage connected and any exposed conductive part
not intended to be electrically connected, the latter being simulated by a foil wrapped
around relays having an insulating enclosure,
• terminals of separate windings (bifilar or not),
• all coil terminals requiring the same test voltage connected and all contact circuit
terminals connected together,
• terminals of separate contact circuits;
b) test voltage or voltages;
c) duration of the test: 1 s or 1 min;
d) reductions for repetition tests, for example for final measurement after an endurance test.
Reductions shall be specified together with such tests;
e) details of the preconditioning, if required;
5 Evaluation
5.1 General
No electric breakdown (sparkover, flashover or puncture) shall occur.
The test report shall state the conditions and the values which confirm or do not confirm the
requirements.
5.2 Test report
If this document is executed as a part of a test record of another standard, then the results shall
be reported as required in the other standard.
Otherwise, it is recommended to issue a dedicated test report according to this document.
The test report shall contain all the information necessary to reproduce the test. In particular,
the following shall be recorded:
• description of DUT;
• where the test voltage was applied with:
– test voltage,
– test duration;
• in case of any breakdown:
– breakdown voltage,
– breakdown time,
– kind of electrical breakdown (sparkover, flashover or puncture);
• if applicable, any other observation;
• the time to complete the test shall be indicated in the test report.

Annex A
(normative)
Test with alternating voltages
A.1 General
The dielectric strength test equipment shall comply with IEC 61180.
A.2 Requirement for the test voltage
A.2.1 Voltage waveshape
The alternating test voltage, as applied to the test object, should generally have a frequency
comprised in the range 45 Hz to 65 Hz, normally referred to as power-frequency test voltage.
Special tests can be applicable at frequencies considerably below or above this range, as
specified by TC 42.
The voltage waveshape shall be substantially sinusoidal. The ratio between the peak value and
the RMS value is √2 ± 3 %. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the test voltage shall be less
than 5 % under full load conditions.
The test voltage is the RMS value.
NOTE In the area of low-voltage equipment, the RMS value is used to specify the test voltage, although the
important factor for breakdown is the peak value.
A.2.2 Tolerance
If not otherwise specified by TC 42 or application standards, a tolerance of ±3 % is acceptable
between the specified and the measurement test volage value throughout the test.
A.3 Generation of the test voltage
A.3.1 General
One of the alternatives described in A.3.2
