RRIFiF HISTORY
The TSO Recommendation R 250, Sampling of Raw Natural Rubber, was drawn up
by Technical Committee ISO/TC 45, Ri4bber, the Secretariat of which is held by the British
Standards Institution (B.S.T.).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1956 and led, in 1958, to
the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In December 1959, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 344) was circulated to all
the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of
an editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

SAMPLING OF RAW NATURAL RUBBER
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation covers the sampling of raw natural rubber, whether in the form of
bales or loose sheets (including crepe), and the allocation of portions of the sample for specific
tests. The sampling of loose sheets is normally carried out only in rubber-producing countries.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 Lot. An assembly of bales or loose sheets characterized by some distinctive common
feature.
NOTE. -All bales bearing the same marks may be regarded as a lot unless there are obvious signs
of heterogeneity. Loose sheets can be regarded as forming a lot only if they are obtained from
a single bulking of latex and have been dried in air or smoke under the same conditions.
2.2 Sample. A group of bales or loose sheets selected to represent a lot.
2.3 Piece. Quantity of rubber taken from a bale of the sample to represent that bale, or
quantity of rubber taken from the loose sheets of the sample and combined to represent
the sample.
2.4 Test portion. Portion of rubber taken from a piece or pieces for subjection to a test,
3. METHOD OF SELECTING THE SAMPLE
For lots where no uniformity in quality has been established, the only safe assessment of the
quality of the lot is that based on 100 per cent sampling, i.e., the lot becomes the sample.
In most cases, practical considerations impose a limit on what is possible, and the following
levels of sample size are recommended.
Rubber in the form of loose sheets. The number of sheets to be taken as the sample is 10 per

cent or 40 sheets, whichever is the smaller number, and the sheets are chosen at approxi-
mately uniform intervals when sorting from the stack of sheets

La Recommandation ISQjR 250, Echantillonnage du caoutchouc naturel brut, a été
élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 45, Caoutclzorrr, dont le Secretariat est assuré
par la British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1956
et aboutirent en 1958 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation EO.
En décembre 1959, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 344) fut soumis à l’enquête
de tous les Comités Membres de 1’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques rnodifi-
cations d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit l’échantillonnage du caoutchouc naturel brut SOUS
forme de balles ou de feuilles détachées (y compris le crêpe), ainsi que la répartition des prises
d’essai de l’échantillon entre les différents essais. Normalement, l’échantillonnage des feuilles
détachées est effectué seulement dans les pays producteurs de caoutchouc.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1 Lot. Ensemble de balles ou de feuilles détachées caractérisé par quelque particularité
commune.
NOTA. - Toutes les balles portant les mêmes marques peuvent être considérées comme formant
un lot, à moins qu’il n’existe des signes évidents d’hétérogénéité. Les feuilles détachées ne peuvent
être considérées comme formant un lot que si elles ont été obtenues à partir d’un seul mélange
de latex et séchées à l’air ou fumées dans les mêmes conditions.
2.2 Echantillon. Groupe de balles ou de feuilles détachées choisi pour représenter un lot.
2.3 Pièce. Quantité de caoutchouc prélevée dans une balle de l’échantillon pour représenter
cette balle ou quantité de caoutchouc prélevée dans les feuilles détachées de l’échantillon
et combinée pour représenter l’échantillon.
2.4 Prise d’essai. Portion de caoutchouc prélevée dans une ou plusieiirç pièces et destinée à
être soumise à un essai.
3. MÉTHODE DE PRÉLÈVEMENT DE L’ÉCHANTILLON
Dans les cas des lots où il n’a pas été possible d’établir l’existence d’une qualité uniforme, le
seul moyen sûr d’estimer la qualité du lot est un échantillonnage à loo%, c’est-à-dire que le lot
devient l’échantillon.
Dans la plupart des cas, des considérations d’ordre pratique imposent une limite à ce qu’il est
possible de faire, et les paliers de valeurs suivantes sont recommandés en ce qui concerne l’inipor-
tance de i’échantillon.

l’échantillon est de lo%, sous réserve d’un échantillon maximal de 40 feuilles, les feuilles
étant prélevées à des intervalles approximativement réguliers lorsqu’on les sort de la pile de
feuilles.
