SOUND SYSTEM EQUIPMENT
Part 11: Application of connectors for the interconnection
of sound system components
FOREWORD
The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters prepared by Technical Committees on which all the
1)
National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus
of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
2)
In order to promote international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees should adopt the text of
3)
the I E C recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will permit. Any divergence between the I E C
recommendation and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly indicated in the latter.
4) The IEC has not laid down any procedure concerning marking as an indication of approval and has no responsibility when an
item of equipment is declared to comply with one of its recommendations.

SOUND SYSTEM EQUIPMENT
Part 11: Application of connectors for the interconnection
of sound system components
1. Scope
This standard applies to circular and concentric connectors to be used for the interconnection of
sound system components and gives the applications and also the contact arrangement and contact
designation for these connectors.
2. Object
In sound systems it is often necessary to connect pieces of equipment from different manufac-
turers and even from various countries in order to achieve desired objectives. These include the
making of recordings or copying of recordings already on tape or cassette, achieving a higher sound
level by means of a separate power amplifier, feeding loudspeakers, automatic control of slide
projectors, etc.
3. General
3.1 The connectors shall comply with the electrical and mechanical requirements given in I E C Publi-
130-8: Connectors for Frequencies below 3 MHz, Part 8: Concentric Connectors for Audio
cation
Circuits in Radio Receivers, and I E C Publication 130-9: Connectors for Frequencies below 3 MHz,
Part 9: Circular Connectors for Radio and Associated Sound Equipment.
I E C Publication 65: Safety Requirements for Mains
3.2 For safety considerations, reference is made to
Operated Electronic and Related Apparatus for Household and Similar General Use.
Notes 1. - The preferred electrical matching values for the interconnection of sound system components are given in IEC
Publication 268-15: Sound System Equipment. Part 15: Preferred Matching Values for the Interconnection of
Sound System Components.
Connectors for broadcast and similar use are dealt with in IEC Publication 268-12: Part 12: Application of
2. -
Connectors for Broadcast and Similar Use.
3. - For applications other than those given in this standard, reference is made to IEC Publications 130-8 and
130-9.
4. - At present not all connectors referred to in this standard are included in these publications.
4. Application and contact designation
For circular connectors, the contact arrangement and application shall be as given in Table I
and the contact designation shall be as given in Table III. For concentric connectors the contact
arrangement and application shall be as given in Table IV and the contact designation shall be as
given in Table V.

- Sub-miniature concentric connector (2 contacts) (2.5 mm diameter).
- Phono/3.2 mm concentric connector (2 contacts).
Note. - The phono/3.2 mm concentric connector has other names in certain countries but these names cannot be used inter-
nationally for legal reasons.

2. - Pending the issue of a full specification, the contact resistance, including that of the screen connection, should
be <_ 30 mil to avoid unsatisfactory operation.

7. Connecting data
7.1 General
The term "signal" used in the following tables shall be understood as the connection carrying
the modulation, as opposed to the connection which is at a near earth, common or chassis
potential.
7.2 Requirements depending on the mode of operation of the equipment
A stereo tape recorder with facilities for mono operation shall, when switched to mono recording,
7.2.1
4, and, when switched to mono playback, deliver equal signals to
connect contacts numbers 1 and
contacts numbers 3 and 5.
3 and 5,
7.2.2 If, during recording, a tape recorder produces output signals at contacts numbers
the possibility of oscillation exists if it is connected to an amplifier in which the "tape" input
signal generates an output signal for recording at contacts numbers 1 and 4 of the "tape" socket.
To prevent this, such a tape recorder should only be used with an amplifier having a "tape
monitor" input which does not generate an output signal for recording from an input signal at the
same socket.
5 may be used in the recording mode as a high
7.2.3 In a tape recorder, contacts numbers 3 and
mV, see IEC Publication 268-15) by connecting them through resistors
impedance input (200
of value 500 k52 to 2.2 ME2 to contact numbers 1 and 4 respectively. An example is given in
Appendix A.
Note. - The use of these resistors may cause crosstalk between inputs. With the worst-case values chosen from those specified
in IEC Publication 268-15, this could be at a level of - 39 dB referred to the wanted signal, but with typical values it
will not exceed - 60 dB and will normally be negligible.
7.2.4 If some of the contacts are not used, they may be left out of the connector. Holes for all pins are
required in the socket insulator.
7.2.5 In normal cases it is recommended to connect the shell of the plug to terminal 2 of the connector
to ensure that the screen is earthed. In special cases however it may be necessary to separate the
screen from earth.
