SCOPE
1.1 This specification describes the properties of a one-component solvent release sealant for use in building construction. These sealants are generally formulated to withstand a maximum joint movement of 7.5% in extension and 7.5% in compression of the nominal joint width.

Standard Test Method for Accelerated Weathering of Solvent-Release-Type Sealants

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 It is difficult to establish a precise correlation between laboratory accelerated and natural weathering because of  (1) geographical climatic variations, local weather variation from normal, and local pollutants and (2) the fact that the acceleration factor is material dependent, varying with the type of material as well as its formulation. This test method is used to determine the resistance of a sealant to laboratory accelerated weathering and, if a control material with known outdoor weathering performance is used, the relative weathering performance of the sealant against that of the control material.  
5.2 This test method is conducted using aluminum channels. Other substrate materials may show different results.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method includes two laboratory accelerated exposure procedures for predicting the effects of ultraviolet or ultraviolet/visible radiation, heat, and moisture on color, chalking, cracking, and adhesion of solvent-release sealants.

Standard Guide for Structural Sealant Glazing

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The old saying “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link” is very applicable to a SSG system. In reality, a SSG system, to be successful, must establish and maintain a chain of adhesion. For example, a factory applied finish must adhere adequately to a metal framing member, a structural glazing sealant to that metal finish, that structural glazing sealant to a reflective coating on a glass lite, and lastly, that reflective coating to a glass surface. This guide will assist in the identification and development of, among others, performance criteria, test methods, and industry practices that should be implemented to obtain the required structural glazing sealant adhesion and compatibility with other system components.  
5.2 Although this guide has been arranged to permit easy access to specific areas of interest, it is highly recommended that the entire guide is read and understood before establishing the requirements for a particular SSG system.  
5.3 This guide should not be the only criteria upon which the design and installation of a SSG system is based. The information herein is provided to assist in the development of a specific program with a goal of achieving a successful SSG system installation. Information and guidelines are provided for the evaluation, design, installation, and maintenance of a SSG system and many of its various components. Considering the range of properties of structural glazing silicone sealants, as well as the many types of framing system designs, material combinations that can be used, various material finishes, and the many types and varieties of accessories, the information contained herein is general in nature.

SCOPE
1.1 Structural sealant glazing, hereinafter referred to as SSG, is an application where a sealant not only can function as a barrier against the passage of air and water through a building envelope, but also primarily provides structural support and attachment of glazing or other components to a window, curtain wall, or other framing system.  
1.2 This guide provides information useful to design professionals, manufacturers, contractors, and others for the design and installation of a SSG system. This information is applicable only to this glazing method when used for a building wall that is not more than 15° from vertical; however, limited information is included concerning a sloped SSG application.  
1.3 Only a silicone chemically curing sealant specifically formulated, tested, and marketed for structural sealant glazing is acceptable for a SSG system application.

5.1 Preformed tape sealants are tacky, deformable solids that are used under compression between two substrates in a variety of sealing applications. This procedure is not intended to simulate an actual use condition, but it will give some indication of the flexibility and adhesion of a tape at low temperature. It can serve to differentiate between flexible tapes that can take some movement and those that tend to harden or embrittle on aging and crack or lose adhesion when flexed at low temperature. It will also aid in identifying sealants that have poor flexibility because they are overextended and contain a low level of binder as well as those sealants having binders that will embrittle at low temperature.

Standard Practice for Laboratories Engaged in Testing of Building Sealants

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Importance of Prequalification—For required accuracy of test results and reliability of certification, it is essential that testing laboratories be prequalified. This practice establishes those qualifications.  
4.2 Contractual Relationships:  
4.2.1 Although testing laboratories may be qualified in accordance with this practice, it is important for the contracting authority to consider the relationship of the testing laboratory with other interested parties before engaging the laboratory to perform the testing. The other interested parties in the project usually consist of the manufacturer of the material to be tested, the contractor (bidder), the owner of the project (user and contracting authority), and the architect who serves as the owner's agent in preparing the contract documents.  
4.2.2 Many sealant manufacturers have their own qualified testing facilities that are used to conduct research and maintain quality control of their products. Generally, the companies that have such facilities are willing to certify as to the performance standards with which their products comply. The contracting authority should determine if there are conflicting interests in such a relationship. The contracting authority may prefer that the product testing to ascertain conformance with specific performance standards and the reporting of such testing be performed by a qualified but independent testing laboratory. The contract documents should make this requirement known so that bidders can bid accordingly.  
4.2.3 The testing of each caulking and sealant for each and every project can be costly. On a small building project, the cost of testing, if required, may be more than the cost of the sealant materials. On a large project, on the other hand, the cost of testing a sealant with accompanying certification by a qualified independent testing laboratory may be small in comparison to the sealant materials and commensurate with the assurances desired by the contracting auth...
