ABSTRACT
This specification covers three classes and three types of asphalt roll roofing in sheet form, in widths agreed upon between the purchaser and the producer/supplier, and composed of asphalt-saturated organic felt coated on both sides with asphalt. Class M and WS rolls are surfaced on the weather (exposed) side with mineral granules, except for any selvage. Class S rolls are surfaced with powdered talc, mica, or other fine mineral matter to prevent sticking. Type classifications (Types II, III, and IV) are grouped based on minimum net mass per unit area of roofing. Roofing shall adhere to physical property requirements such as breaking strength, water permeance and vapor transmission, width, selvage, area, and moisture.

Standard Guide for Application of Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
3.1 Asphalt-based, solvent-type, fibered or nonfibered, aluminum-pigmented roof coatings are used as a protective coating for solar reflection to prolong the life of roofing materials or where decorative qualities are desired.  
3.2 Suitable application of aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coatings is an important factor in achieving a successful long-term coating. Suitable application is, in part, dependent upon appropriate specifications to guide the work. This guide can be useful in facilitating development of an appropriate specification for surface preparation and application of the roof coating.  
3.3 Designers/specifiers of coatings may use this guide in preparing the application portion of their specification. Contractors working directly for the building owner may also use this guide.  
3.4 This guide is not all-inclusive. Manufacturer's application instructions should be consulted and geographical “area practices” considered. Consult membrane manufacturer and coating manufacturer for acceptability of procedures and products.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers the application methods for Specification D2824/D2824M Aluminum-Pigmented Asphalt Roof Coatings, Nonfibered, and Fibered without Asbestos, for application on asphalt built-up roof membranes, modified bitumen roof membranes, bituminous base flashings, concrete surfaces, metal surfaces, emulsion coatings, and solvent-based coatings. This guide does not apply to the selection of a specific aluminum-pigmented asphalt roof coating type for use on specific projects. The fibered version of these coatings excludes the use of asbestos fibers.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 The extent of cracking or pitting of bituminous films is a measure of the extent of deterioration due to weathering. Failure due to cracking is more accurately determined electrically than visually.  
4.2 Failure determined by this test method will depend not only on the characteristics of the bituminous material and the extent of weathering, but also on the film thickness, and the amount and type of mineral filler present.

The specification is intended for general classification purposes only, and does not imply restrictions on roofing system design, such as the slope at which this asphalt may be used.  
1.2 These products have lower application temperatures compared to products specified by Specification D312/D312M.

ABSTRACT
This specification deals with the standards for asphalt roofing in shingle form, composed of glass felt or felts impregnated and coated on both sides with asphalt, and surface on the weather side with minerals. Physical requirements of the shingles such as behavior on melting, tear strength, wind resistance, fire resistance, softening point, and pliability shall be measured immediately after packaging or at a reasonable time. 1.1 This specification covers asphalt roofing in shingle form, composed of glass felt or felts impregnated and coated on both sides with asphalt, and surfaced on the weather side with mineral granules. This specification is designed for the evaluation of products as manufactured. The test methods, physical requirements, and minimum masses are to be measured immediately after packaging or at a reasonable time, as agreed upon between buyer and seller, after manufacture and before installation. Physical and performance requirements after application and during in-service use of the products described herein are beyond the scope of this material specification.  
1.2 Shingles meeting this specification are intended to be applied with a headlap of not less than 51 mm [2 in.].  
1.3 The shingles shall be supplied with a factory-applied self-sealing adhesive or be designed to be locked together during installation of the shingles.
